1.
Across a few different genres... ... Francesco Mendolia / Francis Hylton - Incognito
I used to play bass in a band with Francesco on drums - I swear my bass used to play itself I prefer the tie up with Ernie McKeone on bass although Francis Hylton is awesome too. My fave is Bernard Edwards/Tony Thompson
2. I used to play in a band with the current Incognito drummer (Francesco Mendolia) - I'm sure that guy made my bass play itself
3.
You should already own Plantation Lullabies as a bassist! It's one of my "Bass Bible" albums!
Amen to that - I bought it in the mid 90s I think - what a feel she plays with. Great live too
4. A couple more to add from me! - Remember that they (hopefully) want you to succeed. They are looking to fill the position and get on with playing music. If you feel they are overly critical before you even play a note, that's not a good sign and perhaps no big deal if you don't get the gig - I've landed a few high profile gigs just from being the guy that turns up on time, is reliable, plays simply, and lets the other players shine. I'm guessing that you are not replacing Stuart Zender here! - I like to play *well* within my ability as the first time you screw up attempting that flash lick, everyone knows what level you are at (or more specifically what level you are NOT at Play within your bounds and their imaginations will most likely make them think you are a LOT better than you are. - Try not to be too strong a personality - they have a band dynamic and they are looking for someone to come in and slowly establish their personality on the band - if that's not the case then that would raise alarm bells with me. - The best comment I read before was about quickly trying to make a rapport with the drummer. That's key! - Finally, unless you screw up big time, its possible that they are not listening to you specifically most of the time - they are listening to how the song sounds with you on bass, so relax and don't be too nervous. - Finally prepare, prepare and prepare Good luck
5. Haha - I know what you mean about Bernard Edwards but its definately not him. Yes, my money is on Nathan Watts too - he did the b-line on Do I Do right? Thanks Dingus!
6. Hi All, Hope you are having a lovely sunny day today! The Olympic Torch went past the London Bridge area this morning and has put us all in a good mood I've been listening to "The Crown" by Gary Byrd and the GB Experience and was wondering whether anyone knew who the bass player was on that track? Its an awesome goove! Cheers Sujay
7. Awesome - really looking forward to it now - thanks Ant
8. @Bassjamm - thanks mate - yes we played the Jazz Cafe in March this year great fun (I reckon I'm following a path you've already funkified for me @Roland - its on our list now thanks to your suggestion. @Bassmonkey - thanks for the tip off - will check him out!
9. Thank you both BassJamm and Fumps BassJamm thanks for the heads up on the Yardbird - just what we need to know
10. Nice - so we can play there on the way back down from stardom too (haha - just joking
11. Thanks BassMonkey - you're a Leeds person I see - love the pics of you and your Ric on the Cardinals site:) We are starting to get quite used to "squashed stage syndrome" - it's all part of the funk!
12. Thanks guys!! Really looking forward to this now - we're finalisaing dates with the promoters as we speak.
13. Awesome mate - thank you. I knew someone on here would know. It makes so much difference if the soundperson is friendly as we all know. Last place we placed in London (Bedford in Balham) had an amazing sound lady and they streamed the whole thing on the web. Thanks again Roland
14. Hi Everyone! Long shot but my band have just been offered a gig at the HiFi Club in Leeds. Just wondered if anyone has heard of this club (or gigged there?) BTW we are an 11 piece Soul/Funk band (Bambus City Strut). The dates offered are all on a Sunday so it'll be a nice excuse to take the Monday off as we are all Londonders. Thanks Sujay
15. Thanks man - that Corduroy bass player is the funkiest guy to use a pick since Anthony Jackson
16. I actually bought the push album based on your recommendation - really like it. I am sure you will enjoy Surreal when it arrives - I think it's one of their best. I'll have to check out New jersey Kings as I have a lot of JTQ stuff. Been meaning to buy the Corduroy album for a while too
17. Thanks FunkGod - just had a taster listen on itunes and I will buy it when I get back on wifi. Sounds like a big Francis Rocca Prestia influence on those bass lines?
18. I haven't got "Tales from the beach" (so will buy it). All the albums are really good but my faves are "Positivity", "Tribes, Vibes & Scribes" and "JazzFunk" (which sounds very "of it's era"/dated, but is great)
19. Thank you kindly funkygreega! My old drummer was in the video clip attached to that topic - nice surprise
20. It's an amazing album - I've been playing it a lot over the last few days. A couple of years ago I played in a band with one of the Incognito drummers, Francesco Mendolia (that's him in the clip) and he was awesome - I'm sure he made my bass play itself
21. Morning All, I have recently bought the new Incognito album, Surreal. Got to say its one of their best I've been trying to work out who's on bass duties on this one - does anybody know? (Can't find it online). I think it sounds like Randy Hope-Taylor. That guy has soul! Suj
22. Hi Jay, Thanks for the swift response! Very helpful. I was going to purchase a deluxe in 6 months time so the price is a tad too high to endure the wrath of my wife just now but I will stay a keen observer. Best wishes Sujay
23. Hello, Just a quick question - can you please tell me what guage and type of strings you have on it now and what the action is like. I was ideally after the transparent wine coloured one but the white looks good too. Any chance you could tell me what types of tones are your faves from it and what style you have played it for? Sorry for the inquisition Sujay
24. Thanks guys - really appreciate it First time as the Jazz Cafe for me so I need all the luck I can handle - I'm helped by the fact that I'm playing for a truely talented singer. Happy Friday one and all!
