1. I've double booked myself so I now have one ticket for the first screening of the new Oasis movie which also includes a satellite Q&A after the film with Liam & director.

Sunday 2nd Oct 7:15pm in Olympic Studio cinema Barnes, nr Hamersmith. If you've not been this cinema is brilliant! Ex Olympic sound studios with proper armchairs, great sound of course, and you can take pints in real glasses!

Face value £15, ticket is just an email so instant delivery to you.

2. These were installed to replace the stock pickups in a Fender Custom Shop Strat they sound wonderful, and I'm not just saying that...
I reverted the CS Strat back to it's original pickups before selling it recently.
I would certainly hang onto these but I don't intend on buying a new Strat in the near future so best move them on.

A new set of these would cost you £198 direct from Don's website, plus he has a waiting list.

Looking for £135 delivered (uk)

Info:

Don Mare describes them as the following:

RARE, ( once cancled Strat® sets)
However. it seems JUMP BLUES PLAYERS & JAZZ Cats seem to LOVE these so _ I've brought them back, By altering the magnet coil wire gauges, Unlike traditional pickups, The coils on the Swing0tones are fat and full to the brim with a thicker wire like they used in the 40's ! And the output is way up, however the DC ohms do read lower (in the 4's and 5's), but this has to do with fatter wire being used in tandem with traditional wire size.

The 40's jazzy-ier tone. also acts well whith the tone rolled back,
with these pickups. you still get Lots of Quack in 2 & 4. The sound is more compressed yet smooth, full and punchy with a very sweet, low end_ with clean jazzy highs.

Depends what the finish is but Lighter fluid, (refined petrol), as used by Jimi Hendrix :o is good or WD40 or some aerosol deodorants - I believe. Even 'sticky stuff remover' made for the job, available most places

+1 lighter fuel is THE secret weapon of old school graphic designers for removing sticky stuff. Doesn't smell like white spirit does either.

I played using two fingers instinctively for about 18 years and was self taught. Recently however I finally had lessons and the one thing I am very grateful for my teacher pointing out if that I wasnt using rest strokes. Now I am incorporating them in to my playing and my technique is much improved.
It was an absolute bugger to learn having played a different way for so many years but I am glad I stuck with it as I feel i am much more in control now and the sound is much more defined.

I would definitely recommend you learn this technique.

see here for an example:

https://www.youtube....h?v=y_CS04_g4K4

I have some exercises tabbed out from my tutor specifically to learn this technique - if you want I can email them to you.

Thanks for the offer :)
I actually play like that already, albeit with my one finger technique, so this should ease the transition to two fingers!

Go and find old Chic records and learn these... You won't be able to do it with out using a good two finger technique.
It will take a lot of time.
Practice drumming with two all the time. Do it when driving on the steering wheel etc etc..
Funnily enough it's usually Chic records that cause me to realise that one finger won't do!....

My main instrument is fingerstyle acoustic guitar so I pretty much transposed this technique the bass. But what I say is don't ignore using the thumb on its own. You get different tones compared to fingers or pick. Back to fingers the best exercise is playing walking patterns up and down the neck, alternating between index with middle and middle with ring. Boring but effective
Thumb and/or 3 finger picking is not for me, but thanks anyway. I enjoy other people's playing that can do this though! :)

I'd just play along with songs. Start with the medium tempos first and build up. Don't move on until you've mastered what you're trying to play.

16th's? I haven't played any of those in years. Figure out something better and less frantic to play.

I learnt with 2 fingers but play with 1 finger more and more these days. Another thing I've noticed, my style is changing. I used to be a lot busier. As I get older I'm playing fewer notes.
I'm a bit partial to disco basslines and the busier end of funk basslines! So for example this clip I can do a buskers version of with a plectrum, but one-finger is a no go!

8. I started out playing with a pick, then moved on to finger playing as I prefer the feel and control it brings. However I only learned to play with ONE finger as it was easier and I figured if it was ok for James Jamerson... So I'm pretty good with my one finger now! (Been doing one finger for a couple of years) But at higher tempos or some 16th patterns it doesn't work... and I have to get the pick out. So I'm thinking bite the bullet and learn two fingers properly.

I wondered if anyone had any tips or recommendations?
Does anyone here play one finger with the occasional two, or do you have to be strict two finger alternating?!

Cheers
Ted

9. Who said avoid Kingston!?? :)

Sunday nights, as mentioned, sign up to the Boaters mailing list : http://www.boaterskingston.com
some real A-list jazzers on Sunday nights there and it's free. And it's beside the river, you could probably row home!

Tuesday nights, The Old Moot, 88 London Rd, - Jon Bird's Big Band. Ace big band jazz, with varying line up. Free. Often excellent, although the pub itself is pretty uninspired

The Ram Jam Club behind the newly re-vamped Grey Horse Pub has a rather variable line up but seems to be getting some decent bands in:

Let us know if you find any decent places.

Hi, did you sell the bass on here? Oly white 57 with maple neck? Only asking as I bought the bass from another BC'er on here and the original owner hadn't sent him the original. It came with a Bass Dc replacement instead?
Sounds like the one I sold if your pickguard is a 3 ply white.
If you don't mind covering the post for £5 i'll send you this one - if you want it that is - does that seem ok?

So jealous! Fancied one of those for ages - even more so now since they've added all the probability trigs, new machines and stuff.

Let us know how you get on with it.
Quite a steep learning curve on this to be honest! :(
Lots of combination key presses to access functions and a rather non-intuitive workflow, but I'm getting the hang of it now. I guess it's the price we pay for 'features', but when it takes me a couple of hours to work out why 'accent' isn't working I do get a bit exasperated...

For some reason mine came with OS1.2 so it wasn't till I installed 1.3 that the new machines appeared - and they are very good. Without the new machines I think I would have been left a bit frustrated by the sounds but now there are lots of excellent options so I'm happy with those. Toms are still the weakest sounds, maybe they will update those at some point but judging by how long this update took to come out I'm not holding my breath.

Overbridge (VST/AU for controlling the sounds from within a DAW) is very good.
Still haven't really worked out saving kits & sample management.

So far I would say
sound: 9/10
usability 5/10
