1. I'd go for the Warwick too.....

You know what you're getting with Warwick - I used to have Streamer Standard Fretless and it had a lovely neck. With the Warwick you could readily upgrade the pickups and maybe even stick on a badass bridge at a later date.

Good luck in your hunt !

  2. Paul, The 70's models are still available - in both Japan and no doubt through any importer.

Might be hard getting a very dark fingerboard - but certainly worth asking sellers if they have such beasts in stock. You could dye the rosewood. How you would do that I do not know - apparently most ebony fingerboards are dyed to remove inconsistencies in grain. Ask a good luthier - or ask the folks on this very forum !

I'd still love to get a Black Fender Japan 70's P-bass and put a mirror scratchplate on it - in fact fender Japan brought out one a few years ago - PB70TL - or something like that - rosewood board. Should have got one ...........are you ready etc etc..........

The neck should be a B-profile - i.e., 1.65 inches nut width - a bit narrower than a 60's/50's P-bass - 1.75 inches (C-profile) - but not as narrow as a Jazz - 1.5 inches (A-profile). I have a maple necked P- bass with the B-profile and I love it to bits - very playable and very comfortable in the hand.

  3. Cheers for the reply - If you are thinking about new pickups I could recommend DiMarzio Ultrajazz . Very quiet and sound just like you always imagined a Jazz Bass would sound like - big fat neck pickup - honking jaco style bridge and some nice growl with both on. E-bay from the US is your best bet.

Another possible set of contenders is Norstrand - see http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...nd_Pickups.html - the big stacks sound intriguing but would mean a re-route for the bigger pick-ups.

If you have an idea in your mind about what sound you want, you could get in contact with Wizard pickups. You'll have to google I'm afraid or look elswhere on this forum, but they seem to be gathering an increasing following amongst Basschatters. Reasonably priced, British and good - haven't heard them myself yet but I'd certainly like to. Have a look in the review section - I'm sure I've seen some postings there of late.

    All the best

  4. Very tasty indeed !

I've been eyeing up the five string version of this bass. Tell us more...........i.e., about the 24 fret neck, the bridge and the string spacing at both ends.

Finally - Let us know what pickups/electronics you end up using.

Is that enough questions for you ?

    Hope you enjoy it...........

  5. Thanks for that - your description of the tone and playability could be just what I'm after - i.e., something a bit more modern sounding.

I have an unlined fretless Fender Japan P-bass neck on my Jazz (ash) body at present. Whilst sounding great, it's not adding much to the Lakland 55-02 and Fender Japan P-bass fretlesses I have. I could try and sell the P-bass neck to a BC person and put the funds for that into a fretless Status P-bass neck. I'm sure someone on this forum with a P-bass might want to experiment with an unlined rosewood board.......

In the dark and distant past I used to have a Status Energy 5-string with a graphite neck - used to like its Rickenbacker like clang...........

Say hello to Kilmaurnock for me - my mum and sis used to live there !

  6. Great stuff - I love these basses !

I'd love to get my hands on a fretless SB900 one of these days.

This is inspired by trying out a fretless SB700 many many moons ago - one of the best fretless tones I've ever heard.........

    Thanks for sharing the photos

  7. I have bought new Fender Japan Basses from Japanese sellers on e-bay - seikosuru and bluezy are two names that come to mind - top notch sellers - they sent photos of the bass before posting it. Using the Japanese postal system, the basses arrived in less than a week ! I got a 51 P-bass and a bound and blocked P-bass that way. In fact the bound/blocked P-bass was bought just by e-mailing the chap (via e-bay) and telling him what I wanted. I suppose now that restrictions appear to be coming in on new basses, JP e-bay sellers may focus more on used basses. At the moment however I can still see new MIJ Fenders coming out of Japan.....

  8. Folks,

I'm thinking of getting the fingerboard of my fretless Jazz Bass coated.

I remember someone saying that they got a neck of theirs coated by a certain Mr Shuker.

Would he do such custom jobs ?

Anybody had similar work done and if so would you recommend the luthier who did the work.

    Cheers

  9. OK,

I've separated this thread from some thing that popped up midway through another thread.

Nash suggested his bands practice room in Crosskeys, near Newport. Have they repaired that railway bridge yet ??

How about a time that's convenient to all ?

  10. This is an e-bay purchase from Japan a couple of years ago, a model OPB51-105SD - so has the Seymour Duncan pickup

Strung with Thomastick flats - maybe could do with a bridge cover, a pickup cover and a finger rest ?

The neck is gorgeous - nice and chunky and sounds surprisingly funky with roundwounds - but - I bought it for some good old fashioned thump and it delivers big time with the flats.

  11. You could hang on to the body you just got off e-bay and buy a fretless jazz or p-bass neck for it to snuggle up to.

Unlined maple fingerboard would be nice.........

I got a nice ash Jazz bass body from the people below - first saw them sell stuff on e-bay but then made enquiries via their website - good to deal with and prompt in their delivery across the pond. They do necks too a la Warmouth. The Jazz body fitted my Jap P-Bass neck like a glove......

  12. Ah, Crosskeys !

Do you ever go to the Iswyn Acoustic Guitar club meetings in the Crosskeys Hotel ? - Steve Lawson turned up a while back and did a great set - as did Nick Beggs on Chapman Stick. Not very acoustic I know but they seem to be open to bass guitarists as well as acoustic/electric players.

They have Adrian Legg playing the Blackwood miners institute on March 15th - one acoustic guitarist you should not miss.

    Jim Lampi - another Chapman Stick player - is doing a gig at the Crosskeys Hotel on Fri 25th April. The url of the club is below;

Any way - yes, I'd be well up for a mini bassbash in your prac room. The more the merrier..........
