1. Just sold the above bass to Bernmeister. Came all the way down to South Wales - very brave !

Had a nice time chatting about all things bass.

Can highly recommend to everyone as a prospective buyer or seller.

Hope your enjoy the Lakkie !

Best wishes

Bill

2. Nik bought my MK 2 SWR Goliath Jr 2x10 - the transaction went really smoothly - top guy to deal with and great comms - would readily buy or sell to him in the future !

Enjoy the 2x10 Nik !

Seems you have a burgeoning collection of SWR cabs.......sponsorship no doubt beckons one day.........

All the best

Bill

3. Lovely Cort Elrick RB-5 bass for sale - nice modern sounding 2-octave instrument. Recently strung with DR Hi-beams so sounds fab.

Am letting go of this to make way for a pricier bass.

Made in the same factory as Laklands Skyline basses and the quality is the same - I own a Lakland 55-02 so can confirm this. Light and sturdy - plays great. Has the same pickups and pre-amp as the Lakland 55-01 NTMB bass. Sounds broadly similar to the 55-01 but does to my ears sound more "modern".

Here is the spec;

35" Scale
Ash body with flame maple top
Flame maple facing for headstock
3-piece Maple neck with dark rosewood fingerboard - looks like ebony.
24 medium jumbo frets
Zero fret, 1.75" wide
Active 3-Way EQ
Volume/Blend/Treble/Mid/Bass Controls
Bartolini MK1 Pickups
Bartolini NTMB preamp (US version upgrade)
Weight - 8.5 pounds

Comes with gigbag. In excellent condition - has a couple if dings but nothing major.

Looking for £325 - an absolute steal for such a nice instrument - gets rave reviews on Talkbass and Harmony Central websites - give them a look !

4. First and foremost I believe you have to have a good idea in your mind of what kind of feel/sound you are after.

Lakland covers the more classic Fender feel/sound - which can be tweaked a little bit to sound more modern - great B string sound

Musicman is kind of the opposite in my opinion whist retaining the Fender feel - obviously, given its lineage (!)

Warwick - is more like Jazz bass on steroids and covers modern funk and rock sounds with aplom. Tend to be heavy on the old shoulders in my experience - so maybe a swamp ash bodied model perhaps.

Status are worth a try 2nd hand - especially the graphite necked models. I got a great Rickenbacker type growl from a 5-string Energy that had a graphite neck - throughan SWR Readhead amp - this was good few years back mind - but that sound sticks out in my mind.

Fender have their new 5-string P-bass if you fancy tradition - getting good reviews.

Spector are a make I have little experience of but make wonderful funk rock monsters from what I hear on recordings.

Another alternative would be 2nd hand Sadowsky Metro - but those are hard to come by over here - unless you are prepared to buy from the US via e-bay or a reputable Bass supplier in the US - Bass Northwest and Bass Central are two that come to mind. But you'll have to factor in another 20% to cover import and VAT charges as well as shipping - typically from £60-£120.

I would take the time to try a few of these makes out - get a feel for what appeals and what doesn't - it'll be good fun trying them all out.

If you're lucky - once you try them all out - a model you do like may appear in the for sale section of the forum for a good bit under your £1000 target - put the rest towards a cab or amp.

Good hunting !

5. Here's a sound sample from the Danelectro website

http://www.danelectro.com/bass_ls_red.html

Sounds fab !

There's also a good video review on www.bassplayer.tv

Thomman won't be getting their first deliveries until 25th August

Bummer ! - so a bit of a wait then...........

6. I believe this was one of the first 5-string basses I tried out - in Musical Exchanges - as it was in Birmingham - oh, many moons ago. Great feel - very comfortable.

Haven't they (Status) re-introduced them but with a graphite neck ?

Enjoy your new arrival !

7. I'm going to miss this baby ! Letting her go to pay for a more expensive instrument.

Three years old - in excellent - I'd say 9/10 condition - if not a smidgeon more.

Here's the spec:

Flat-Sawn Maple neck
1.8" Wide neck at nut
3.3" Wide neck at last fret
Maple fingerboard
10-13" radius (compound)
Hipshot Tapered Shaft Tuners
Lakland Dual-Design Bridge
Bartolini Soapbar pickups
Bartolini USA NTMB Preamp
Cut and Boost controls: Bass, Midrange, Treble, Panning-style Pickup Blend Control

Headstock has a nice quilt to it, whilst the fingerboard has some mild birdseye figure too - something you don't see too much on a Skyline. Comes with Lakland hard case. Looking for £495 - shipping not included.

Cheers

Bill

8. Folks,

I've not been getting into 6-string bass as much as I thought I would. This is my third 6-er - having owned Status, Curbow and Shergold over the years. The bands I'm currently in don't really need such an instrument, so a more deserving home and some funds for another project are the result.

The specs are as follows :

35" Scale
Carved Mahogany body w/ Burled Maple top - Tobbaco sunburst
One-piece maple neck w/satin polyester finish
Rosewood Fingerboard
24 medium jumbo frets
Zero fret, 2-1/8" wide
Active 3-Way EQ
Volume/Blend/Treble/Mid/Bass Controls
Dual MTD wood covered soapbar pickups
Shielded electronics compartment
MTD quick release bridge, 18mm spacing
Double acting truss rod
Buzz Feiten tuning system
Weight - 8.8 pounds

The neck is a dream to play - very easy to navigate all areas. Hasn't been gigged so is in mint condition - less than a year old - comes with MTD case. I'm looking for £595 which is a steal at the price. Shipping not included. If you live nearby - South Wales - you'd be more than welcome to try it out.

Cheers

Bill

9. Sorry about the shameless plug - I suddenly have GAS that I didn't have a week ago and so need to let go of a few basses to pay for a more expensive one.

The chap in the Elrick RB5 photo isn't me by the way.

Blimey - I wouldn't agrue with him if he fluffed up the key change in "Let There Be Rock"........

10. I could recommend two 5-ers - the Lakland 55-01 - which comes from the more classic Fender background - the neck pickup does a very good impersonation of a P-bass - whilst you can dial in the bridge and the treble eq for more growl and a modern Marcus Miller style slap sound.

The Cort/Elrick RB5 is more modern sounding still - has the figure on both headstock and body - but sadly does not have four tuners on the top.

Here is a few piccies of the RB5 from a quick rummage on t'internet

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pcurtain/page5/

Both the 55-01 and RB5 are made in the same factory I believe - build quality on both are excellent.

Low and behold - wouldn't you know it - I might just have two such basses up for grabs - the coincedence is astounding !

Good luck in your quest........

Bill

11. Ian,

A real beauty of a J-influenced 5-er I must say. Love the top, the bridge and the pickups - should be a stonker !

If she had a 24-fret neck I would have been snapped the bass from you as soon as soon thing can be.

Unfortunately for you, I just managed to find a Cort Elrick RB5 on E-bay that hopefully is winging its way across the pond as we speak. So that is hopefully going to quench my thirst for a 2-octave 5 string bass.

Have a quilted maple capped bump from me to speed this baby to a new home.........

Bill

12. Folks,

http://www.rumbleseatmusic.com/

Although the Fenders seem nice - it that Nash 58 P-Bass replica at the bottom that got me going..........

Don't look at the guitars !

13. Chris,

If you do end up getting a graphite neck for your P-bass, let me know how you get on with it. I'm thinking about a Status unlined fretless P-bass neck for my Jazz

http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=13885

However I do rather like the Japanese fretless P-bass neck that's on it at the moment and am contemplating a polymer coating for the fingerboard.

Would be rather extravagant to have two fretless necks for one bass - a little devil pops out of my head every once in a while and says - "do it, do it" mind.........

We'll see - £340 is a lot for a neck - that's the price plus VAT and shipping for the Status graphite neck.

Bill

14. Wow !

That's an interesting new addition. Amazing price too. How do they do it ?

If you're into tweaking hardware this could make into one lovely bass.

I can just envisage a pair of darkstars pickups on this - the pickups cost double that of the bass however !

15. Folks,

Saw a quick review of this instrument on bassplayer TV - http://www.bassplayer.tv/

Go to "basses & gear" then "gear previews" and finally "danelectro dano 63"

He gets a nice rickenbacker like tone out of it - going through an SWR super readhead combo - sounds fab !

Two versions - the one he plays is the 24 fret long scale version and there is a short scale version too with 22 frets.

Get's great reviews in the latest Guitarist magazine too - the baritone sounds like fun as well - no doubt could be tuned EADGBE only an octave down if need be.

Great value - list is £249 but I have seen £219 on Thomann - £233 including postage I believe.

Could be really tempted here - a nice retro alternative to Fenders.........

Don't know if that body shape is universally appealing but a very light, reasonably cheap bass with two stonking pick-ups, 24 frets and an aluminium nut sounds quite intruiging to me !
