1. Thanks for the input everyone.
A lot of sense written in the thread, and the "Why do we gig" thread as well.

I probably am too demanding or specific in what I'd be looking for, especially having been out of the gigging game for a good while.

Time for another long look in the mirror.......not a pleasant sight though.

2. Reading this got me thinking:

http://basschat.co.uk/topic/202671-why-do-we-gig/

Started playing bass at 14 (I'm 35 now), played in (original) bands from age 16-22.
Some good bands in the early and middle days, in my later gigging days too many abandoned projects, timewasters etc.

As I'm sure a lot on here will have experienced - Some of the best times of my life have been related to being in and around playing in bands and some of the worst times of my life have been related to being playing in bands.

I barely touched a bass from ages 23-33 but in the last couple of years have started to practice as much as is practical with a full time job and a young family.

Sometimes I think I really want to get back into a band, sometimes I don't know if I do!!
I do like practicing, learning and challenging myself at home.

I've had a look at a few bands and they've had a look at me but nothing has sparked my interest.
To spark my interest the band would ideally need to be playing originals, all musicians be of a good standard and trying to do something a little different than the usual middle of the road material.

I suppose I'd rather be in no band than in a not very good band playing to small, unappreciative audiences, landlords/promoters trying to play games. I wouldn't say I wanted to get back into it for the money but being a little older and wiser I would not accept being taken advantage of and being consistently out of pocket for late nights lumping gear about to backstreet empty pubs.

So maybe I'm just not good enough to be in the standard of band that (I think) I want to be in?

Any input welcome....
Anybody else in the same situation?.

3. I played this very bass last week while drooling over EAD's fretless ACG - this ss a great bass and a great price.
Great guy to deal with as well.
For anyone thinking about this you could do a lot worse for the money.......

4. I absolutely love my Spector 5LX - dating from 2007 at this time the Spector TonePump active tone controls
did not have the internal output trim pot, that was added later in 2008.

I love the edgy, aggressive, red hot sound. Still capable of a wide range of tones in between.
Super comfortable 5'er neck as well - and absolutely beautiful.

5. I'm toying with the idea of going to see the Yellowjackets in Manchester next month as part of my jazz beginnings introduction/education.
Mr Felix Pastorius on bass as Jimmy Haslip takes a break.

I know precious little of them and their music, does anybody have any transcriptions, dots or charts for me to work through to get more familiar with the music?

Good player...must have taken most of the day to put this together.

yeah - it started to get a bit dark at 3:50  .

Good Vid - I agree with most of the comments.
Surprising how similar in sound they were really.

My favourite was the JB and the Stingray. P bass was not thumpy enough - although I think the style contributed to that.

So.....it is all in the fingers then eh?

7. Patrick very kindly sent me some sheet music books, free of charge no less!
The kind of gesture that makes Basschat such a great place.

A pleasure to deal with.
Would highly recommend.
Thanks again Patrick.

8. There is quite a bit of info around on these basses, a lot of which is conflicting.
There are people who are more well informed than me but I have to disagree that the 300 series have gold (or brass) harware.

I recently sold a (passive) SB301 which was very similar to this, also in the trans red finish.
Differences between this are the fretboard, the bridge on mine was less substantial and not Gotoh stamped (although the tuners were), my nut was plastic where as this one is brass
I reckon this is an active SB310.

Either way still a fantastic bass.

Future collectible??? A lot of bass for not a lot of money..

quite possibly - as I nominated in the

Damn good basses these. are too.

Can anybody confirm if this is from the (SB) 400 series?

10. I avoided Level 42 like the plague for too many years.
Have got into them recently, especially the earlier stuff.
Actually, just remembered that is was getting the 'heads up' on here about him being on The One Show. Surprised myself that I liked what I saw on there.
Subsequently booked to See them at Manchester Apollo towards the end of last year, superb stuff, seems like a top fella to boot.
