  1. What brought it home to be about my sound set up not being as sharp as I'd like, was when our keyboard player ran a track from his Mac laptop through his HK keyboard PA/amp set up at rehearsals. It was like wow hadn't heard that bit before, and it all sounded so clear at the time. This may have been due to many variables as already mention in this post, or possibly the track being played at a higher volume, but it certainly made me sit up and think.

I've a decent pair of Sennheiser HD 600's headphones at home, but I prefer to play along to tracks at the same time. The obvious answer now may be, well why don't you buy a HK set up, but I just wondered what other peeps did to obtain a decent bass sound from their home hifi set ups ( btw, thanks again for all your suggestions on this )......

  2. Hi Guys,

I listen to mainly MP3's from my Mac via a couple of decent hi fi speakers and separate hi fi amp. My problem is the bass never sounds as clear as I'd like. I was thinking of adding maybe a sub to enhance the sound, or possibly upgrade completely. I listen mainly in my small man cave so cannot use huge stuff or crank the volume too high, nor do I want floor shaking type bass sounds.

Doe's anyone use or have any recommendations on stuff that really brings out the bass guitar in recordings really discernible and crystal clear? Thanks in advance!

  3. I've not found my BF cabs to be in any way 'fragile', and they have been used extensively. As for which is better; that's like asking which is the best Bass Guitar, it's personal choice. I think they are both great cabs, and you'll be happy with whichever you plump for, ideally hear each first if you can. I think BF still allow a months free trial, not sure if Vanderkley do, so that might be a good option for you to consider before pulling the trigger. Good luck with your choice......

  4. The Stingray has a wider neck than the Sterling, similar to that of a P bass, so that may suit you better if you have larger hands. They come in a variety of different specs notably with either a 2 or 3 Band EQ (3 or 4 knobs!), and prices will vary depending on which one you choose (the 2 EQ cost more for some reason). They also come with a maple or rosewood neck. Sound wise the 3 EQ has more tone than that of the 2 EQ, but it really is marginal and not something you'd notice much when playing live, you'd not go wrong with either IMHO.

There is a cheaper made Stingray bass on the market confusingly also named the Stirling Sub, and I think these also offer similar tones, and are made outside the USA.

As to why SR's prices differ that would again depend on your spec, i.e any USA made model such as the 5 string, or the 2 EQ models (and the Stirling (USA) model, due to having a smaller body and slimmer Jazz type neck), will have a higher price band than a standard USA made 3 EQ Stingray.

Either way, whichever USA built Stingray you plump for, you'll not be disappointed with the build quality or range of sounds on offer. I've never played or owned a cheaper sub model so cannot comment on them. Good luck with your hunt.
