+1.  Somewhat to my surprise, my playing is morphing to the good - and this is with a 6 string!

I don't think you'll ever stop Scott waffling.  I think we should cut some slack to a guy who's so on the detail that he has spent years watching videos of bassists just to see whether they're holding their fingers like this, or like that. And that's on top of all the other things he has achieved/taught himself. And TBF he does stop now and again to summarise.

Apart from the format and exercises, is anything fundamentally different from the SBL academy courses?

I think you missed my point - these are all identical items, the only difference is the price.

That's my thoughts too.  The lack of any specs etc on a lot of the fancy packaged stuff suggests they're just the same cheapo stuff in a nice box.

I'd pay for something that I had confidence would be the same as or improve over the oem.

  3. OK, so just about 5 weeks after ordering by 99p ear pads turned up.

Fit: OK they do fit, but actually they are a different shape.  The Sony pads are slightly elliptical while the chinese pads are oval.  They don't sit over the ears so well, but not bad.

Construction.  The sony pads have a gauze and foam backing, but the 99p pads have only the gauze, don't know if this an issue.

Sound.  Weirdly, the Sony pads sounds clearer, which is strange as the 99p pads have less material between the ear and driver.  Both seem to exclude outside noise the same, but I think maybe the sony pads were better before the surface broke down.

Overall, amazing for 99p, but I'll keep my eye out for something that's a direct Sony replacement that isn't a total rip off.

Nothing wrong with the HB PB - 50, I've 4 of them

4! Have you got any of the newer ones, different colours etc? Have they changed the neck profile.

I like my PB50, but I really wanted a 51 style bass and also the same neck profile as my Fender Classic 50 - which is shallow but wide (44mm), the PB50 is 42mm and has a deep profile.

  5. There is a rather nice MIJ fender one on eBay at the moment.

If you want a new one, Maruszczyk make them, would probably be under a grand.

Edit: I also have a HB 51, they are great value but it is pot luck whether you get a good one or one that needs a lot of set up.  At least there are some more colours available now.

Edit2: Some great single coils on the Maruszczyk website. Not the right shape I guess but can't see why they wouldn't do you a P bass shape with a single.  https://public-peace.de/index.php/bass-guitars/maruszczyk/mr-tee/4-string

I didn't read the entire topic but I was one year on SBL, I will never go back on this school. The content is quite pertinent but I can't stand Mr Devine anymore, he's too much on the buzz, clickbait, buisness way for me.

Some masterclass are really intersting though, like Rich Brown's ones.

Maybe try reading the thread next time...even the title would have been a start😉

Have you tried any of these? The gen sony ones are a bit steep, the whole headphones only cost 90 quid.

I needed some for some Sennheisers which weren't available, I managed to find non-genuine ones on eBay for a few quid which are great. Perfect fit and decent quality, had to wait a while as they came from China.

Thanks mate, it might just have to be a shot in the dark of ebay then.  Seem to be all sorts of branded aftermarket 'upgrade' types, but I'm just a bit suspicious that they are the same ones from ebay with £20 slapped on!

  9. Just tapping into the knowledgebase here - my Sony MDR 7506 headphones have shredded ear pads.  A look online and it seems gen Sony ones are either hard to get or ridiculously expensive.  3rd party ones abound but have the opposite problem - too many choices ranging from a pound to £30ish.

I have no idea what I'm looking at here, memory foam, sheep skin, leather, synthetic..... all I want is something broadly similar to the original pads (ie same level of noise cancelling) at a reasonable price.

Anyone been down this road or have any suggestions or what to get and/or where to get it?

This basschat thread is half a dozen posts in with no contrary views so here goes...

Ed's playing to the dogma of tradition and supposition that groove-orientated music somehow has primacy.

It doesn't and his approach is wrong for many situations. His wry observations on the latest YT wunderkind are spot-on but they lurch to the opposite end of the musical spectrum to the absurd, leap-froging all the 'post Stanley/Jaco' great music with active, melodic, up-front bass I love...

I think you might have missed his point. He's not saying that type of playing has primacy, just that it does in his band, and to him that's a great change from what he has been doing.  As he's more than comfortable playing in any bass situation in any style I actually think it's great for him to recognise the value of the role 99% of bass players.

  11. Just bought a Jag (bass not car!) from Chris.  Great guy to deal with, everything fast and straight up.  Packaging was excellent and would have survived almost anything the couriers could throw at it!

    Highly recommended and cheers!

I blocked the morning for this useless video.

You should have read the summary sheet first. Sums it all up in about 10 lines. The feedback on the site suggests a lot of members got a lot out of it. Scott is great at motivating people to practice, but if you don't need that, it can stretch out the videos.

Once you’ve been in SBL a while it gets easier to self filter and work out what will be of benefit to you.  But, you know, if it just isn't your thing there's nothing anyone can do.

As unpleasant tit and employer of ghost writers, Lord Archer, once snapped to a nagging hack: "I've got 50 million in the bank, you haven't." While Scott hasn't got that much and I'm not about to tell you how much he does have, it's a sufficient percentage of that figure to justify him in making a similar rejoinder and not changing his approach to training and making video one iota.

To be fair he does ask for feedback within SBL and does respond. And to fair with SBL as its developed, if you don't like Scott's style there are a score of other instructors now too.

The trick is to leave aside the free to air part of SBL, its just advertising.  You wouldn't go buy a fodera and then leave it in it's case while you watch free YouTube videos of it...
