Sounds like your neck is shifting a bit. Might be bending a tiny bit, but I reckon it's more likely that the neck pocket screws need tightening up.

Never had a tuning shift like that on my wooden neck basses.

I'll check to make sure. Thanks

  2. This may be a stupid question. What happens to the other 3 strings when you drop to D?

I haven't used a hipshot but when just tuning to drop D manually I often find one or more of A to G go out enough to hear it. Have I just got a sensitive neck or am I caring too much about the slight change?

    Nice!
what I really disliked was the touch, more than the look (which I didn't like either)... a white or black one would make it looke amazing :)
Really looking forward to it now. I Can see the black guard going on there pretty quick, probably at the same time the TI flats go on.

Hope it arrives when the wife is out... as I haven't sold the Jap Squier yet.

It has a series/parallel/coil split switch and a regular tone control with a .33 cap. I may experiment with the wunkay tone circuit as a next step but for the moment I'm plenty happy with it as it is :). (sorry if this is a bit off topic)

Beautiful L1000 on eBay UK at the moment.

Is that an ebony board? Haven't paid much attention to these basses until you guys mentioned it on here.

[Does it still sound like a p bass when running off a single coil?]

Yes, in single coil it sounds like an early 50s P, in parallel very close to a split coil P (perhaps a little tighter due to the non-staggered poles), series gives a bit more heft and grunt but it's still very 'P-like'. It retains the essential characteristics of a P, all very no-nonsense, just plug it in and go.
I like it and it sounds really versatile, but for some reason it messes with my head when I look it - its like that Heston Blumental Bacon and Egg Icecream. It looks like it should be a P Bass, but it tastes like something else!

  6. Gold is not my thing either, just looks a bit flashy for me. If I really hate it, I have a black one lying round somewhere.

Thanks to the link to the roadworn neck, looks great but don't need it now. Probably a bit over the top to put that on a clean looking Squier anyway.

I've got my Squier for sale now, so hopefully someone picks that up and enjoys it. I see plenty of people looking for P Basses with Jazz width necks, so hopefully one of them finds the ad.

  7. Hi All,

For Sale: Made in Japan Squier Precision Bass in Olympic White with white pickguard. Believed to be from 1996 at Fujigen Factory (P serial number)

Width at Nut: 1.5 inches (factory Jazz width) Weight: 4.1 Kg (9 Pounds)

Upgrades: Seymour Duncan SPB-2 Pickup Schaller 3d-4 Bridge

Condition: Excellent but with some small knocks on the headstock, a small ding on the skunk stripe, a tiny pinhole on top of the upper horn and a chip (not through lacquer) behind the rear body (all pictured).

    Price: £250 inc UK shipping

It's with some reluctance I put this up for sale as I really like the tone of this bass, its just that I don't get on with the Jazz width neck and need more of a standard P bass width. It has an upgraded SD pickup which really packs some punch and an upgraded schaller bridge. The bridge is a real thing of joy - also adjustable for string spacing. This is a great sounding and playing bass and should be out there getting used.

Currently strung with a very thumpy set of D'Addario Chromes Flatwounds, but I can change them for a set of rounds if you prefer (or ship both).

This will be shipped in a fender P Bass box and will be well packed and insured.

Please let me know if you need any more info, pics, etc.

    Dan

    Excellent choice! :)

The neck is what makes it or breaks it for most. I personally love it. What colour did you get?
Honey Blonde, arriving next week, a used one.

Not sure about the gold pick guard though.

  9. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I went with the MIM classic 50s precision. Saw one going for an OK deal and the colour was the biz. Not a beater bass, but hopefully I won't feel so precious about it. If I don't like it I can always play cricket with the neck. Seriously though, should be able to sell on after an extended trial if it doesn't suit.

Certainly, and for your budget you could buy a Harley Benton 51 Precision, normal Precision, Jazz, and a Stingray!
I would do this, only problem is the wife. You see, she plays piano, now all my gear put together doesn't add up to the cost of her piano. But to her I have 6 'guitars' (3 basses and 3 guitars) and she has 1 piano, therefore I have 5 too many. Now I can point out that a guitar is a different instrument to a bass and that of those 3 guitars, one is a classical worth maybe £150 and the other two are just beaters, one I actually found at the tip and rebuilt. Of the basses, really on the stingray counts of the electrics and the acoustic bass, well that's a different instrument too isn't it?

None of that means anything to her, so in some ways I'm better off having less instruments that are nicer.

That's why I'm finding the idea of the fender Classic 50s bass attractive, nice looking decent instrument, but cheap enough used that I won't be too worried about taking it anywhere.

Then again the HB bass above costs virtually nothing and I'm sure would look great cut down to a tele style headstock and refinished in tru oil. Would save a lot of cash.

  12. Thanks for that clarification on the L2000. I think it's probably just interesting to check one out, but not to solve my particular problem here.

Check this out though, is this the ultimate beater bass? The Wilkinson pickup and d'addario strings are probably worth the asking price.

  13. I don't know exactly why, but I've always had a thing for simplicity. I generally like basses with only one pickup. I'm probably missing out though, as there are some sensational basses out there at the moment, those Sandberg VM series in the classifieds right now for instance. But that's not the type of bass needed here.

  14. If I can I'll find one to try out. Have you tried the PJ tribute?

I've always had a hankering for the older G&L p type bass (can't remember the model no.) but I think they are quite pricey now. Also i'll end up liking it too much like the ray!

What about the G&L L2000 Tribute?
I've always liked G&L and wouldn't mind having one of their basses one day, but how p bass like is the L2000, being active with 2 humbuckers?

The Classic 50 series is the split coil version... The one on my avatar is the fiesta red one (with replacement pickguard as I don't like the original gold one)
Thanks, I'll keep a look out for one of those. There's actually a really nice looking one for sale up north, collection only though, sigh...

As a stingray 5 player I really like the newer modern C Fender Standards Precisions. The quality of the newer MIM ones seems much higher than in the past too.
I'll have to check out some Mexicans... I wouldn't mind trying some necks that are thicker than the ray too, just to see how that feels. I have quite big hands and maybe the thinner less wide necks just cramp my hands up.

  18.
They still feel different, for the most part. They're both classified as "wider" generally, and sometimes "chunky" but I find the Stingray generally the thinnest in cross-section of the two, even if it's wide. However, I find at home easily on either of their variations. I like the Fender Precision Classic 50 neck a lot. It's a little wider than a Stingray but similar profile, and the lacquered maple neck feels great.
I'll check out the 50s precision shape if I see one. Are the squier versions the same neck profile?

I really want to like them.
Nirvana got me interested in music in the first place, so I love Dave Grohl.
The rest all seem like good people!
I just find the music pretty middle of the road. Can't get into it.
Apart from "Everlong". That's a great song
I feel exactly the same as this.

I like them but don't like to listen to them.

I've played a Stingray for years and recently acquired a Tokai Hard Puncher. The necks are very similar and the Tokai sounds more like a Precision than many genuine Precisions in my opinion.
That's good to know, I'll add that to my list of possibilities, although are they getting hard to find like the blazers? That blazer was closest thing I have found so far, but haven't found one for sale. Were they made in the same factory?

Good advice there - I don`t know if Korean Squier necks would fit (can`t see why not) but they are very nice indeed, would recommend going down this route if possible.
I'm too sentimental to do this to my P Bass, anyway these MIJ Squiers are really nice, not sure it'd worth much split, may as well just sell and look for the right bass. Might just have to go through a few more in my search for budget p bass with raylike neck heaven....
