  1. I've gigged RCF HD 10-A, 732-A, 735-A; Yamaha DXR10; FBT ProMaxX 112A; and QSC CP8, CP12, and K10 - mainly as a stage monitor (10+ piece function band), and occasionally as backline.  I found the QSC CP12 to be the sweet spot of sounding good, loud enough, but small, light and easy to transport.

I struggle with the peak signal flashing constantly with the gain set at about 11 o’clock with a passive P bass, whether there are effects engaged or not. I’d have expected the loop to only show on the post peak?

You originally wrote that the gain was "hardly on" but subsequently said that it's at 11 o'clock - which is it?  11 o'clock is about 40% way round on that pot, so it's not unreasonable.  My P bass peaks at 2 o'clock with the eq flat - but I do often slightly boost some low mids, so my gain is usually at 1 o'clock.

You also said "the gain is so low that I’m actually missing something from my tone".  The 'peak' light is pretty objective though for setting the correct level.  How is the tone of your basses through the EBS if you remove all other pedals from the chain (before, after, and in the effects loop)?

I agree that the peak light is independent of anything that comes after it, including the effects loop.  One thing to say though is that the effects loop has the option of series or parallel.  I think parallel mode will affect the gain structure (even if the pedals in the loop are bypassed), since it's summing two signals.  So in that case, the EBS input gain would need reducing.

the channel gain is hardly on, and even a small amount of EQ boost has the post LED flashing away.

Where do you have to turn the gain knob to get the 'peak' LED (the non-post one, by the gain knob) to light up?  For me with a P bass, it's around 2 o'clock.

Then with all EQ at noon, the filter off, and nothing in the effects loop, the 'peak' and 'post peak' lights should light up in sync (either both on, or both off), since the level is the same at both points.

With flat eq, if the 'post peak' is on but the 'peak' isn't... is there something cranked in your effects loop?

My passive Tony Franklin P bass appears so hot on the input of the SC that the channel gain is hardly on, and even a small amount of EQ boost has the post LED flashing away.

The first thing I'd look at is the pickup height.  It will be less hot if it's lowered (which will also change the tone).
If you're happy with the pickup height, how are things if you just turn the volume down on the bass? If you prefer to run the volume on full, something like this could work: https://www.ehx.com/products/signal-pad/ (It's the same thing as a volume control on the instrument, but in a pedal.)

  6. Cort B4FL MHPZ: a beautiful fretless bass with an organic tone.

£300 posted.  N.B. the price is lower than average due to a couple of issues - see below.

Lined fretless (26 fret positions), with dot markers on the side.

Cosmetically, there are some scratches and shallow dings on the body and top of the neck - but fortunately nothing on the back of the neck, where your left hand makes contact.

Here's a clip with the magnetic pickup:

    BAD POINTS:

    • the piezo (Fishman Powerbridge) is giving an uneven output - the G string is quieter.  Maybe the element needs reseating, or maybe it's beyond repair.  Unfortunately I haven't found the time to investigate.  Here's a clip:

    • I think the truss rod socket must be stripped - I can't get any hex key to fit firmly, and I've been reluctant to use any force in case I make things worse.  With the current Chrome strings, the action is low and very playable: 2mm at the 12th fret position, and 1.5mm at the 19th fret position.  The nut is correctly cut for a fretless (i.e. very close to the fingerboard).  So it plays nicely as it is, but it's something to bear in mind if you wanted to experiment with strings of different tension.

  7. I just picked up an older-model RCF ART 735-A on Gumtree, for a pretty good price of £325.  For comparison, the current version is £899 new.

I've previously owned a 732-A (1x12") and that was too loud... so I imagine this 735-A (1x15") is going to destroy everything 🤘

The seller has a second one for sale if anyone's interested: https://www.gumtree.com/p/speakers/rcf-art-73a-speaker-one-only-/1479168783

Size comparison with a QSC CP12:

Hello, after a long on going illness I posted a question about the value of my basses in order to possibly sell, I've been out of the game for that long due to said illness I have no clue (think C) and just wanted some sound advice before deciding on it.

For some reason my post has been either removed or moved, if you can't ask for help and advice on this site where can you get advice.

This is covered in the forum rules:

    2024-05-16-19-30-56.png.4278429a559bc5766d218cd28af807e3.png

So the advice is to check sites like reverb, ebay, and basschat for similar current/previous listings.

    E.g.

    https://reverb.com/uk/item/81547069-squier-matt-freeman-signature-precision-bass-2012-2015-vintage-white

    https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/461107-sold-squier-matt-freeman-precision-bass-vintage-white/

One thing to bear in mind is that the asking price seen in adverts isn't necessarily the final sale price, as the seller might have accepted an offer.

  9. The Mesa should already be pretty flat with all EQ at noon and the voicing set to "flat".  You can nevertheless completely bypass the preamp by plugging your Headrush into the Mesa's Aux Input.  See how that sounds before buying or selling anything.

My issue is with what money there may being paid to two people only for expenses, and then when someone is doing us a favour and will have some small but genuine expenses, he's told "nope".

My friend accepted this as he wants to do the gig.

The dep has the information and accepts the situation.  I would not start getting worried on someone else's behalf - If they are unhappy, they can decline the gig or discuss directly with the band leader.

I'm happy enough not to get paid for this particular gig

I don't understand... when you previously did gigs with this group, before the "£100 behind the bar" was ever mentioned, were you all doing the gig for no fee at all?

  12. Another thumbs-up for one of KiOgon's solderless looms/control plates.

    The details are here: https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/334251-bass-wiring-looms-for-sale/

You get your order in by sending him a private message: https://www.basschat.co.uk/messenger/compose/?to=7835.  Particularly if your bass is not a standard Fender, chat everything through with him as he can accommodate different hole sizes or locations.  I once posted him a non-standard control plate which had unusual hole sizes, and he drilled them out to the correct size and sent it back with the new loom installed.

  13. 1/2" Hipshot Ultralite Licensed clover tuners in shiny chrome.

    4 x bass side
    1 x treble side
    i.e. for a right-handed five-string bass with the common 4+1 tuner configuration.

All dimensions on Hipshot's webpage, here: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1574/0577/files/206K.PDF?147414096911308745

Original screws slightly worn, so new replacements included (non-Hipshot).

    £90 including postage.

I'd split at £18 each + postage at cost, if I have buyers lined up for all five.
