  1. 2022 Squier classic vibe 60s precision bass neck VGC

I bought this for a project bass and it fits the Squier body I have very well and played fine, however I just cannot get on with the glossy neck (my other basses have satin necks)

Very good condition, just one missing bit of lacquer on the inside of the neck heel (unseen where it fits into the neck pocket) can't see much (if any) fret or neck wear.

-Neck looks straight, truss rod adjustment headstock end.

    -42.8mm nut , bone nut

    -Vintage tint lacquered finish

-Typical Squier/Fender heel size (around 63-64mm)

I believe these are Maple with Indian laurel fretboard

Machine heads/tuners work fine, they are a bit stiff compared to premium brand tuners.

  2. 2001 Squier P bass body DIY resprayed in metallic burnt orange.

Has this a while for a potential project, but need to spend more time playing in 2025 and less time tinkering…

This isn’t lacquered and was done DIY by the previous owner, so either use it as it is (quite a nice colour, some metallic Ford burnt orange I think) or fully strip and refinish.

Comes with neck plate/screws, bridge, scratchplate screws  and an old used AllParts scratchplate ( three holes black insulation taped up)

Please study photos for condition, it is well used etc. but very usable.

    £50 delivered.

    Thanks Neil

In those days bass equipment tended to be large and hard to find. Power levels were very low as befits tube/valve output stages. For most applications 50W tended to be the upper limit. When 100W amps hit the market, usually using four EL34s in the output stage, players who could afford them switched to them in droves. I couldn't <sob>. That led me to start building my own amplification.

For PA the Mixer/amplifiesr were what you would find in a building PA. The Cave used Vortexion my last band in Liverpool used an Altec Lansing unit with two microphone inputs. The band had three vocalists. At that time microphones were typically high impedance. I modified the amp and by removing the plug in transformers I had the space to add two more high impedance inputs.  I still have those two transformers. It's amazing what you hang on to through moves about the country and even across the world. LOL

    Excellent info thanks.

Did you ever see or hear anyone playing through one of  Adrian Barber's built "coffin " cabs?  when you were playing in Merseyside in that era.

Someone told me the cab on the left of The Cavern stage in the Beatle Story Museum , Liverpool is one of those "Coffin" bass cabs (please see photo)

    This book is excellent too...

Being a fan of Bob Weston's grinding/snarling bass tone in Shellac, I've just ordered a TS-50B kit from Musikding - https://www.musikding.de/TS-50-Bass-Preamp-kit

I believe it's pretty identical to the Tronographic Rusty Box bit with a toggle switch instead of a foot switch for the boost function.

It's the first time I've ordered anything from them - Has anyone had any experience with Aion/Musikding?

    Cheers

This looks cool, I saw the bassist from Idles uses the Rusty Box lots and gets a great sound.

    Thanks Neil

  5. Great pedal, one of the best straightforward overdrives with clean blend in IMHO, does everything from mild breakup to pretty heavy overdrive.

Mine is also back on the board and it has become an "always on kind" of pedal now

  6. Hi everyone,

I saw the Cavern in house PA is up for sale and it sent me down a McCartney fan boy rabbit hole for a few (many)  hours.

    https://www.gottahaverockandroll.com/The_Beatles_Cavern_Club_Stage_Used_Vortexion_Valve-LOT56162.aspx

I’m interested in the "Cavern Quad" amp /"Coffin cab"  as used by Paul in the period after using his 30W Selmer truvox plugged into the Coffin 1x15” reflex cab and moving onto VOX amps.

Probably much of mid to late 62 I guess whilst touring (8 months)

    http://beatlesplus50.blogspot.com/2011/10/october-1961-barber-coffin-nobody-know.html

Info online notes the cab and modified / rehoused amp were made for Johnny Gustafson by Big three ex member/sound Engineer/producer and Electronics expert Adrian Barber.

There are a few pictures around of the coffin 1x15” bass reflex cab, but nothing I can find of the amp?

The photos from the Cavern show a Quad II/22 setup on the floor =  I wonder if this is it before being rehoused in an army surplus case?

    https://www.diyaudio.com/community/attachments/beatles-gear-pdf.789924/

    This video is great too.

    at 13:54 it is mentioned.

There are some photos online of a white  “Cavern Quad” amp on top of a coffin style cab but I cannot find the source of these and whether someone made a replica or it’s original.

Does anyone have any more photos or information on the modified rehoused Quad II/22 preamp and power amp or potentially the white reproduction?

Probably all sounded good for the time,  Quad hifi stuff is excellent.

    Thanks in advance...Neil

  7. I have a late 80s Peavey TB raxx tube preamp

They are not so common in UK, but sometimes come up £150-£250 ish (the TG raxx, guitar version is more common, just a few component values different I believe )

I’m always really impressed with it, had it around a decade – only really used in the house but did once use it with a massive PA and was impressive.

Does the whole Alembic F2b thing, but also has gain boost with active EQ (bottom/body/edge)  and can still sound very modern too with nice drive.

Mine probably needs a cap job as it's a bit noisy.

If you find a bass or guitar version, snag it !

    Thanks Neil

  8. Seymour Duncan “Duncan Designed’ PB101 P bass pickup SPARES/REPAIR.

Had these in the spare box for some time.

If I remember, when I installed it one of the coils went open circuit and no sound from a couple of strings — but when I uninstalled and measured the coils were OK.

I suspect it has an iffy connection between the thin winding ends and the waxed wires, but haven’t got time or energy to investigate.

Currently they are measuring fine at circa 16.5K Ohms in series which is correct (each coil around 8.25K Ohms) .

The covers come off so you can see the winding ends.

I do rate these pickups, slightly hot and I have a set in a project P bass, they are made in Korea OEM for mainly Squier basses.

Come with pots/knobs, foam and some mounting screws.

  9. Squier P bass pickups/wiring/knobs/springs and foam from a 2001 P bass.

Bass had been randomly painted so bits of paint still on covers.

Pickups work OK and measure 7.6K Ohm, so pretty standard output, they look like ceramic magnets.

Full sized pots I gave a clean with servisol, capacitor and associated wiring,

I think the knobs are more recent.

    Ideal for a project bass.

  10. Squier P bass neck 41.8ish mm at the  nut.

    Came off a 2001 Squier P bass I bought , I’m using the body for a project.

Well used condition, but actually played well on the bass body,

Has bits of paint left on it, which might come off with more cleaning, previous owner said the rear of the neck has been painted green/red/black for some reason.

Previous owner has fitted some recent better quality tuners (look new) but looks like the ferrules have been glued in.

Nut area looks rough, but actually the nut actually works as expected

Looks like the nut been glued in, this could be re-done and some fretboard wood filling in that area.

I’ve given the fretboard a good clean and oiled it.

    Typical Squier/Fender neck pocket dimensions.

Would be good for a project to completely strip down and finish or just use it as it is.

  11. Single Eminence 12" bass speaker from a TC electronic 212 BC (2x12" cab) .

I believe these were custom for TC Electronic from Eminence  as there any spec/details on the internet.

    Codes =

    E61601211

    7912035

-Lightweight Chinese made speaker. Condition is used, but it works and sounds fine.

-16 Ohm, overall cab was rated at 250W, so this is probably a 100W speaker

-Probably best in a multi speaker cab ( in parallel with another 16 Ohm speaker for  8 Ohms) or use with an amp which can drive 16 Ohms.

-Comes with a length of red/black twisted wire soldered to the speaker terminals.

    Thanks Neil

  12. Hi,

I’ve put together a few DIY amps using class D modules with a simple preamp or as you suggest a something like a Sansamp as a preamp would work fine.

You can purchase a simple Class D IC and module for tens of pounds on ebay/Amazon/Aliexpress etc to do have a try.

As mentioned, cooling is very important, good electronics “best practice” for minimising noise and last but not least power supply consideration..

You may need a DC bipolar +/- 30V  —>  +/- 100V at several Amps (at least) to power the class D module (depending on type) most of the class D OEMs go for switch mode PSU for this.

So check the spec of the module you a planning to buy and confirm you have a suitable PSU or it has a PSU onboard so you can connect 230V AC mains directly to it.

Years ago I experimented with the IRS2092 which can deliver 350W+ into 8 Ohms, this guy is really good to watch ...

If I can find my modules in the shed, I’ll take some photos, I just screwed to a bit of ply with a simple preamp as as above DC PSU. Worked better than expected, but I never got around to putting it in an enclosure…. Life got in the way

    Thanks Neil

    Hi ,

I have a good quality Telecaster bass decal which you can have and compare to the gold one you have.

It's more silver/grey than gold (bit lighter than photo shows)  which may be more period correct? Dunno, the Fender experts will help I'm sure.

    I'll message you details.

  14. Fretless 50s P Bass / Telecaster Bass neck 34" Maple

Bought used for a project, but won't be needing it now as bought a new bass.

-Interesting inlays, I think these necks are from ebay originally.

-42mm nut , please see photos for other dimensions.

-18mm tuning holes, has multiple tuner screw holes on rear (would be covered up by a larger body tuner).

-Rear of neck has been sanded back for a used finish.

-Couple of dings and scrapes ( one by G string tuner on headstock face)  but not too bad condition overall see pics

-Looks like maple on maple, probably 34" scale.

Has some Fe**r decals, but this is NOT a Fe**r neck

    Thanks Neil

  15. P bass neck with tuners and string tree and original nut

Was a paddle neck bought from Gear 4 music (see photos) initially fitted to a project bass which never progressed.

I shaped the headstock into a Fendery shape (tricky as they don’t really leave enough material on the paddle headstock) , its OK and passable.

It has had several coats of tru oil all over and so is not lacquered in any way, once dried it was sanded with 3000grit, so back of neck is very smooth.

Fitted with some used GB500 tuners originally bought from NorthWest Guitars (one rattled, so I superglued the paddle part and it seems solid)

Neck is unused condition, you may want to clean the frets if it bother you as I tru oiled everything (including the fret board)

  16. Hi everyone,

Sorry got totally distracted with work stuff and this has gone in the gigbag (for now) .

I'll reach out to one of you in the next few weeks once I get some time.

I'm South West based but could post the body and pickups anywhere and pay for the work.

Incidentally I've also put the original HB neck up for sale as below.

I thought I could try to live with the Jazz bass 38mm nut neck, but on reflection and playing it ( +getting these pickups fitted)  I've gone and sourced a maple p bass (43mm nut) neck which should fit the neck pocket OK.

    Thanks Neil

  17. Harley Benton VT series Jazz bass neck - Brand new

Brand new, never used from a Harley Benton JB-75 Vintage series sunburst bass.

The 38mm nut is too narrow for my sausage fingers so I’ve sourced a P bass neck to fit.

    Comes with tuners, nut etc.

Frets: 20 Medium 2.9 mm nickel silver frets

    Nut: White graphite nut

    Trussrod: Double action truss rod

    Neck: Canadian Hard Rock Maple

    Fingerboard: Laurel

    Fingerboard inlays: white ABS blocks

    Neck profile: D

    Neck binding: white

    Nut width: 38 mm

Sizing is similar to a Fender neck pocket, please see photos and dimension of the neck heal and HB body

The neck is 63.6mm wide at the heal, and tapers slightly to 60.5mm wide over the length of heal

    Thanks Neil

  18. Hi everyone,

Can anyone please help routing out this jazz bass body for  these thunderbird pickups, I don't own a router and wouldn't trust myself doing this as a first job... 😞

I has the same idea as @Berserker  PJBird build and was really impressed with his build and the sounds of these pickups.

This is  a Harley Benton JB75 Ash body,  looks like the thunderbird pickups should fit OK and I also have the pickup surrounds.

Ultimately I will also fit a P bass neck as this Jazz one is a but narrow for me.

    Many thanks in advance, Neil
