1. Personally I love the Jazz Bass Neck.....slim and comfortable.....I borrowed a Friends Precision for a few months an early 70s model it was very heavy and the Neck was very wide....but a great sound....but it's all down to one's personal preference and taste.

How come you post a thread offering help; "Help anyone", then you go and ask about pedals?

The offer's nice, but what sort of help are you offering?

Lol......maybe I should of worded it 'Help Needed' a lesson learnt....apologies if I misled anyone.

Hi, i too admire the sound of Jamiroquai whether its Paul or Stuart on bass. I'm sure they use certain effects on certain tracks but a lot of the sound they get is through their fingers and their bass guitars and amps....start by using your fingers, its cheaper and believe me its where it all starts. Its how you approach the strings that makes a difference.Watch and listen to how they play the notes....adding effects to what they do enhances what they play. Hope this helps, good luck!

Thanks Paul and everyone else who've given advice....I've looked on youtube at some envelope filters they sound great....but like you say Paul it's in the fingers.....I think I've a decent 'Feel' but not a great ear.....but as i'm just starting back i'm in no hurry to get in a Band again....years ago I had an obsession with having to get out in a band and gig ect.....this time i'm going to take it slow and work on my technique....thanks again.

Hi Bob,

At this stage if you've got an iPad or iPhone (or an android phone) I'd be inclined to pick up an iRig connector (just a few quid on the bay) and download the Amplitube app (there's a free version that gives you the gist). You can download a number of pedals pretty cheaply and listen on the headphones - the quality isn't too bad - it certainly will give you an idea what works and doesn't for you and your sound. A side benefit is that you can play along with songs you drag in from iTunes and can use it as a bass trainer as you can slow songs down without a pitch change.

Thanks Mart....unfortunately I don't own either, I've been listening to some Demo's on youtube......there's a good (MXR) site with some very good demo's with Bobby Vega and Uriah Duffy......plus a Boss Pedal Site and others ect. Someone recommended an Envolope Filter and Compression Pedals and possibly a Octave Pedal which I like the sound of....Cheers again to all, much appreciated advice.

Lots of threads here about effects. Looking at your tastes , maybe envelope filter /synth/wah/octaver
Over to other basschatters ...
Thanks for that i'll take a look.....or youtube some Demo's maybe......I do like a lot of 'Blues' but some of the modern stuff is very Funky which I really like....but I think that'd be just a straight thro' sound? Such a lot to learn, difficult to know where to start...but thanks again.

6. Hi Folks.......Just wondered if anyone could give any 'Bass Peddle' recommendations ect....i'm just getting back into playing after many years out......I've never used any sort of peddles or effects in the past....I've always been into a lot of 'Old School' stuff.....but wondered if any of the modern players enhanced there sound? I like the sound of players from the likes jamiroquai, incognito.....acid jazz funk sound if you get my drift?? Or is it just down to great playing skills.....which i'm afraid I truly lack...lol.....thanks Bob.

7. Yes you're right on the amp mate....but it'll do for practice and maybe rehearsal purposes for now....i'm singing with a Band at the moment and we're tied up gig wise till year end and a few gigs into 2014....but I don't know after that....at this moment i'm looking forward just to getting back into the Bass....although knockin' on in years now (51) lol....I still enjoy gigging and hopefully get back in the swing...thanks for your comments.

8. Cheers Rich......i'll see how the p/up's perform if I get sorted Band Wise....I haven't played the Bass for years....as said in my thread tried to get back into it a couple of years ago....but didn't really have the time....I'm going to seriously give another go this time tho'...once again thanks.

9. Just Bought what I hope's a Bargain.....Fender Jazz Bass made in Japan late 80s early 90s model for £300 from a local music store a few dings as you'd expect from a Bass from that era.....just wondered if you guyz think I may have copped a bargain? (hope so) feels great to play....picking it up on Saturday after he's oiled the neck ect. Also picked up a nice 65w Marshall Bass State bit battered but just had the graphics sorted ect for £99....so i'm happy and looking forward to start playing again after a long lay off....I bought a nice Squier cv a few years ago which I regrettably sold, hence the recent purchase....going to put in a lot of practice and hopefully find myself a nice little 'Blues' Band for the future....Cheers.

10. I Love the Blues....early stuff, modern stuff....some great bands out there....check out Henrik Friecshlader, Matt Schofield, Kenny Wayne Sheperd, Stevie Ray Vaughen, early ZZ Top, Rory Gallagher, Taste, early Free, Ron Sayer jr, Walter Trout....all the old Blues Legends ect.

As for playing Feel/Timing essential....remember the Blues is mainly the Guitar and Vocals.....you and the Drummer just keep it nice n tight....Enjoy!!!!!

11. Hello,

Played in many Bands over the years....enjoyed most of them....The latest venture is a Rock Covers Band...all in our late 40s and early 50s apart from our drummer who's in his 30s....so you'd think we'd know better...one of our members as got an annoying habit of ignoring texts messages...some important like gigs or support slots, some just well wishing "hi mate how's it goin" sort of thing texts....i find this behaviour rather baffling, annoying and plain rude....or am i just been an 'over reactionary old git'??

12. When you join an established band....you have to do the songs they give you.....especially if you have gigs booked? Tell him to get his head from out his Ars and get on with it....i've played with numerous 'up n running' bands regardless of material coz i enjoy gigging.
You can always tailor the set to suite in the future? Good Luck.

13. Amazing stuff my friend....i recently packed up Bass....as i was simply "just not good enough" as long as i've a hole in my arse i could never be that good! I tried and do miss it....but it just didn't come naturally.....oh how i wish.

I know that one of JPJ's heroes was James Jamerson and I think this is his most Jamersonesque basslines but call me biased as a huge Zep fan but it is better than all of JJ's lines combined.

Sorry i dissagree m8......JAMMO....was king.

15. My first Bass was an Encore [red] Precision with proper retro precision style headstock, rosewood fretboard ect....i stripped it down and it was made of 3 pieces of solid wood not ply.....used this bass in my first band an old rock n roll outfit and it sounded great fat, punchy but warm sound played thro' an old Carlbro' Viper 90w combo wish i still had both.....Bought for £50 mid 90s and it'd been passed around a bit by then so unsure how old? I also had a 75 Columbus [natural finish] Precision made in japan wish i still had....Currently got a Squier C.V Jazz Bass....always had low end basses as i'd never been able to afford top end bass....but always coped.

My First Bass was a Red Encore Precision....which i stripped down and was made of 3 parts of solid wood not ply....but believe me it did the job i played in a rock n roll band at the time and it really sounded the bizz....i payed £50 for it and was the best £50 i'd ever spent it had a lovely warm fat tone....played thro' an old Carlsbro' Viper 90w Combo....still wish i had it to be honest....i think it was passed around a bit before i got it which was mid 90s....quite heavy with a nice playable neck, rosewood fretboard and retro precision headstock....so yeah was well chuffed with mine.....same with an old columbus precision i had too....a limited budget as always restricted me to low end basses....but i've coped....somehow....got a squier cv jazz at mo'.
