1.
Nigel Tufnel&Dereck Smalls:"is this a Joke?"
No joke, in my view the work he did with Tindersticks was first rate.
2. How a shout for Dan McKinna of Tindersticks fame.
3. + 1 for Steve Severin, and what about Picasso, the bassist for Monkey 3. Relentless baselines which underpin all that is good about this quality space rock outfit.
4. Your sound is great and good luck for the future. I hope you found your bass player, I would love to have given it a go alas i'm too inexperienced, too far away and too old.
5. + 1 for David J of Bauhaus. Another to throw into the melting pot - Kim Deal of The Pixies, very understated but classic baselines. The one and only Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath and Jean Jacque Burnel of the Stranglers. These are some of the people who's playing prompted me to start learning bass myself.
6. A month ago I ordered the above cab from a company called Musikhaus Thomann in Germany, it was a good price (£477.96) and the company was recommended to me, but delays in them being able to supply are making me think of looking elsewhere. Don't get me wrong this is not a criticism of Musikhaus Thomann, I knew when I ordered that they would need to order the item in themselves and that delay would be inevitable, but they can't even give me an approximate delivery time even after a months wait, hence possibily looking elsewhere. I haven't been able to find a comparable deal with a UK based firm however a company called Musik Gattermann based In Austria offer a similar price for these cabs and can supply almost straight away. Sounds good but I am wary of using a foreign company I have no experience of, has anyone bought kit from this firm and if so what have your experiences been? BH12neil
7. I have a Gallien Krueger 1001 RB II and its an awesome bit of kit and something that you can built cabs around over time. I'm new to all this but my limited experience says that its a head that will offer power, clarity of sound and value for money especially at the price that Soundslive are offering it at. Having said that be prepared to wait because they are awaiting stock and delays can be considerable. Oh and like everybody else has said try loads, you will know the one for you instantly when it comes along. Happy shopping. BH12neil
8.
Hey Neil, A headphone amp has a socket to plug your bass in and a socket to plug headphones in, no speakers involved. Something like this. (Not an endorsement, I have never used those amps). My dad (guitarist) loves his Pandora, but I don't know of any similar products for bass. I guess the closest I can think of is I own a cheapo Zoom 506II that can be used with headphones, and you get the bonus of it being a multieffect unit to play about with too. Personally I'd still be tempted by either a mixer or a tiny practice amp with a headphone socket as well as the above suggestions. Basically, a gadget that does something else and can ALSO be used with headphones. I guess spending money on a dedicated headphone amp just sounds like a waste to me.
I see what you mean now and have to agree it seems a bit of a waste to me as well. The idea of a small mixer seems a better idea, any suggestions to point me in a general direction? I guess the mixer would be connected to the amp via the DI? Would I be able to play backing tracks this way? Thanks for your help. BH12neil
9. Thanks for your comments Jack. You suggest using a separate headphone amp, excuse my ignorance but how does that work? Where would you plug it into the amp and would the extra load effect the set up of the rig? Seeing that all the cabs are 8ohm would the headphone amp need to be the same? Sorry I don't understand. BH12neil
10. After a lot of consideration based on not a lot of technical knowledge I have come up with a proposed new rig. I would appreciate comments on whether this is feasible and would work for me as a relative newcomer to the bass world. Is this kit reliable and recommended? I play a Stingray 4 string HH and want a growl on the bottom end and clarity elsewhere to play mainly rock and space rock music but also to be able to chill it down to play quieter genres, Jamiroqui for example. I hope to play small venues in the short term but want plenty of capacity for larger gigs if they come my way. Anyway that's the sort of background, here is the proposed rig:- Gallien-Krueger 1001 RB-II Bass Head with 1 x Gallien-Krueger NEO210 and 1 x Gallien-Krueger NEO212II. The one thing that I need is to be able to use headphones for practice and although there is no specific phones socket I understand that I can use the direct out, is this correct and how does that work? Sorry if I am asking stupid questions but this will be my first outing into separates and I hope this first rig will last a long time. Thanks to those that have helped me so far in looking at different options and look forward to all comments/advice. BH12neil
11.
I don't know about the rest of the kit you mention but the EBS Proline 4x10 is massively heavy. I can't lift mine on my own and consequently it rarely gets taken to gigs anymore despite the fact that I love the sound.
Point taken and since I posted I have been looking at the option of lighter weight cabs but its so confusing, any suggestions? BH12neil
12.
Did you not get my message?
Yes thanks mate, very interesting stuff and I will be getting back to you once I have done a little more research. Just trying to drum up some additional comments from elsewhere. BH12neil
13. come on lads and lasses give us a little help, someone somewhere out there in cyberspace must have some comments to point me in some sort of direction. BH12neil
14. Ok, having now decided to go for separates rather than a combo and being completely new to this amp game, I have looked at options from EBS and Epifani and would welcome any comments or advice. The Options:- EBS Fafner II Bass Head and Proline 410 cab Verses Epifani PS1000 Bass Head and UL410 cab I play a Stingray 4 string HH and like a strong bottom end, I hope to be playing some small gigs soon and who knows where that could lead. Longevity is important to me as I see this purchase as a long term investment. The one thing that strikes me is that the EBS gear is far more expensive than the Epifani, however I don't really understand the technology behind these rigs so I am sure there is good reason for the difference in price. Any comments, advice and help would be really appreciated. BH12neil
15. Hi everybody This is my first post so I hope somebody out there can help. I am thinking of buying an Ashdown ABM C210T 500 EVO III 2x10 Combo to upgrade from my Line 6 Lowdown Studio 110. I am fairly new to playing but am learning quite quickly so want an amp that I can use for the small gigs I hope to be playing in the future. I am a fan of combo,s because they seem easier to use. Would I be able to add an Ashdown MAG210T 200 Watt 2x10 Deep Speaker Cab EVO II to add power and clarity or would this be overkill? Any comments on these amps or perhaps alternatives. All help really appreciated. Regards BH12neil
