I have the same GAS, except for the 4 string version. Thanks goodness Christmas cleaned me out financially

So now isn't the best time to point out that there's a 4 string bolt on Thumb going for 700 quid in the sale thread? ;-)

  2. I was flicking through my live DVDs the other day and decided to give my Mudvayne disc a spin for the first time in ages..................................................and now I'm gassing for a Warwick Thumb 5, probably not going to happen though but here's a clip to show you what I mean

  3. Due to a cancellation, my covers / function band Naked Bass are now available for a gig New Years Eve, I appreciate it's quite short notice, but if anyone knows of anyting - preferably in the Sussex, Surrey, Kent area (though further afield would be considered too) please give us a shout, here's a bit of marketing blurb about the band:

"Naked Bass are a tight and professional function band, who play fun, up-beat cover songs from the 60s to present; covering all genres from the likes of The Monkeys, Cee-Lo Green, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson and many others. The band will have people up, dancing and singing along making your event a fun, memorable and above all entertaining occasion.

The band regularly play weddings, private functions, anniversaries and corporate events around Sussex, Surrey and Kent giving the band a wealth of experience in entertaining people of all backgrounds - from managing directors to working men’s clubs and everything in between. This was demonstrated when they were chosen to support X-Factor finalist Jamie ‘Afro’ Archer at Lingfield Park Racecourse earlier this year to a diverse audience of over 2000 people."

    Cheers guys,

  4. Most of my auditions have been fine, however when auditoning a 2nd guitarist for my metal band we had a bloke rock up, whilst setting up he says to me "so what tuning do you guys play in?" I a bit shocked (as he'd been sent a few tracks 2 weeks before) replied "err drop B mate" and saw his face fell, as i wondered back to the car for something i saw him frantically slackening off each string.

He then proceeded to pretend to play along to some of the tracks. Suffice to say he wasn't asked back

  5. Opening for Jamie 'Afro' Archer off the X-Factor at Lingfield Racecourse earlier this year with the covers band was really cool. Making him look sh*te was great too.

Playing a packed tent at The Download Festival with the metal band was brilliant too, also recording the metal band's album - i love being in the studio

  6. Both pickups on is definetely the way to go with these, I used mine for both a covers band and a meoldic death metal band and used the following settings:

    Covers:
    Both pickups
Parallel (flicked over to series for the bass solo)
    Passive
    Treble slightly rolled off
    Played with fingers

    Metal:
    Both pickups
    Series
    Active with treble boost
    Bass slightly rolled off

The covers sound was a thick but still clear enough to cut tone and the metal tone was an absolutely monstorus, agressive tone that cut through by brute force.

Tbh, i don't really rate the sound of either pickup solo'd, they just sound like something's missing - the bridge sounds too thin and the neck too muddy, i used to switch over to just the bridge for Hysteria but found it sounded a bit cheap and nasty sounding. Together though they sound awesome

  7. I've got an Avon jazz copy that's been de-fretted, it's got some issues with it - input jack dodgy, neck pickup not working (or possibly wiring gone), needs new pots and nut and the bloke sorting it out for me tells me there's a twist in the neck.

Odds are once it' sorted i'll take it up the jam night a couple of times and then probably sell it, don't know if i'll make a profit but be nice to have a fretless to mess about with for a bit

  8. The live / studio thing reminds me of when i was really disappointed with Ladyhawk after hearing her on (i think) radio 2, hadn't heard her before and she was doing My Delirium acoustically with guitar, cello, keys and an upright bass it sounded fantastic - had a real folky vibe to it. I promptly downloaded it off I-tunes when i got home and was really disapointed to find a synth-pop song that was a bit of a Faith No More rip off

Good question.. and sadly I must admit the answer lies mostly in vanity! I wanted the colour (trans wine red), wanted it to be a US Fender P-bass (not a copy or custom build), and wanted it to be new in original colour (not a refin). The active pre-amp and the J pickup at the bridge were bits I thought long and hard about and eventually decided I could either get rid of or ignore. So, because I'm strange, stripping out the active bits and fitting a simpler pick-guard would be cheaper, and actually get it closer to what I originally wanted :)

    Trans wine red? Sounds gorgeous

My only gripe is with the pre-amp. I affectionately know the pre in my 2010 Deluxe P as the 'Fender DFA', because it Does F*** All. The pan isn't a pan (as already covered) and one of the dual stacked pots should have come labeled 'high pitched electrical noise', which you can elect to dial in or out of your overall tone as you see fit. Unless, that is, you're near fluorescent lights, and then it's there irrespective :) ...so I leave it on passive all the time!

Don't get me wrong, the bass itself is absolutely great and the pickups in passive mode are as good as any big name equivalent replacement that I've tried. But eventually it'll be this deluxe's destiny to have a new pickguard made with only holes for volume, tone and either a proper pan or a three-way toggle, and all the active stupidity stripped out and stuck in a box.
    [/quote]

Why not just swap the pre out for an Aguilar / East / Sadowsky etc? Then no need to get work done as the pick-guard, battery compartment and cavity are all there and presumably you wanted an active pre-amp when you first bought it?

I can't tell you what to do. But I can recommend the Gallery for the work. If you decide to go there I'm sure you'll be happy with the work they do, and they'll take on board what you need and discuss it with you. I can't vouch for Wal or anyone else in the area unfortunately. Hope you get on ok.. Fz

Ditto, I believe it was the gallery who did the mods to my Lakland and a very good job they did

  12. I used to use my G&L for almost the entire covers band set, but as it's tuned B-E-A-D I had to switch over to my jazz for Sweet Child O'Mine as you need the top string for the intro. However I decided that was too much hassle and just used the jazz for the whole set, particularly as the guitarist had a habbit of forgetting that I needed to do this and would launch into the intro without warning.

So now I've got my Lakland that'll be the one I'll use for the gig (tuned to standard) and I'll bring the Fender as a backup incase I break a string or something

  13. Aye they're Lindy Fralins - and they really are great sounding pickups. I had heard good things about East and was going to look into them further; the only other stipulation i should make is that i don't want to add any more pots, so swapping out the tone pot for a stacked one and adding a 2 band eq seems like the best option - i'll look to see if Aguilar do something like that

  14. Arrived today from John (Old Slapper) who is a gent - modified Lakland Skyline Duck Dunn model

I'm really enjoying it, need to get some round-wounds on as they suit my playing more, which is a shame as the flats sound great.

In addition to the current modifications I'm planning on adding a D-tuner and as there's a battery compartment already there, a pre-amp of some variety. I'm thinking Sadowsky, particularly as I like the idea of having the tone control in passive mode, but what would you guys reccomend? I've got an Aguilar OBP-3 in my Mayones which is sounds great but I wouldn't mind trying something else

  15. Off to see them on Sunday, did they do nothing with death metal vocals at all? I really like the new album and love the mellow stuff but think it would be a shame if they didn't do any growly vocals as the likes of Demon Of The Fall, When, The Night And The Silent Water, Deliverence, Masters Apprentices , Under The Weeping Moon, Blackwater Park, The Drapery Falls, The Moor, The Baying Of The Hounds, Heir Apparent etc are all clasic Opeth tracks and all have at least some heavy vocals on them
