Exactly what I do, for the same reasons; and I agree, I think it's a better sound like this than I'd get from a small / turned down amp

Does anyone know how the neck on a Lakland Bob Glaub might compare to a 70's Fender? As I love the tone of my Duck Dunn, but I would prefer a wider neck and I think they both have Lindy Fralin pickups

Last night at the local jam night, I finally tried my mate's '79 Fender Precision and fell in love with the neck, just so comfotable - seemed to fit my hand perfectly; so inevitably, GAS set in.

Now, a genuine late 70s P is almost certainly out of my price bracket as I'll have to sell gear to pay for it and the way the market is at the moment I'm going to have to take a hit on value to sell some things. However a used USA or Japanese should be fine, so my question is, what models would have a neck profile the same or similar to my pal's? Doesn't have to be Fender, any precision really.

New strings everytime - absolutely definitelywith that genre. You can get brilliance eq'ed out with a gentle cut, you cant add harmonic content into the sound of old strings, and that is what will make the bass heard against the guitars and over laptop speakers.

Old strings maybe OK for MoTown (not necessarily tru either in fact ) but they are definietly the right way to go for rock, pop, funk, and pretty much everything else when recording.

This. Particularly if you're playing metal, there's plenty that will add warmth but nothing that will add the brightness and harmonic content of fresh strings. Reading back, I realise I've mostly just repeated Simon's post, bears repeating though.

I think you'll be fine; most 34" 4-strings can handle drop D without being too floppy so I can't see a 5-string tuned to Bb being an issue

Am I right in thinking the Rumble has a solid state power amp? If so don't worry as it's only valve power stages that always need a load.

I've got mine in a 4U case with a power regulator in the spare space and not had any thermal problems........hmmm...........wondering if I should do some surgery on my case

A mate of mine had one of these, good bass - very powerful pickups IIRC

You've got to remember that the FX loop is normally post EQ on the amp so will need to adjust the EQ according.

I find a mix of some pedals before the input (overdrive) and some in the loop (compressor, pre-amp) works best for me.

I played at Hammerfest 2 years ago which is at the Pontins in Prestatyn; it was great fun and good venue for it, but I'd never take the kids there :-P

If you do buy it in the UK, Bernie at GB Guitars in Brighton - the UK EBS distributor - will mod it for you for about £20.00 (I think) to have an LED rather than a bulb which will stop this happening again.

He did mine after the bulb went and if you want you can pick other colours, I went for red but actually regret that and think blue would've looked better.

Have a bump for a great amp, I sometimes think about changing to another amp but then when I plug in, all doubts go away - this amp will do any genre of music superbly

I watched the video for Anchor by Cave In the other day and now have GAS for a black Gibson Ripper, will need to get the Mayones sold to have any chance of that though.

Also, would really like to get a P-Retro and a D-tune for my Lakland and really sort my distortion tone out - I'm thinking an EBS Metaldrive with a line splitter to keep the bottom end

I really like Ghost, not as good as some other doom outfits, but can see why they have a lot of appeal - like Black Sabbath playing Metallica riffs.

Cradle however, are pish.

My Lakland Duck Dunn, it's the tone and the feel, it just sounds like a bass should - all the classic tones right there, and I normally have the J pickup switched off, though it's there if I need it. I love the Precision looks too - just timeless and the neck lets me move around the board so easily.

Then there's my G&L L2000 Tribute, it looks great, the neck seems to just fit my hand - even better than the Lakland - and the tones are brilliant: from subdued vintage to monstrous metal it is the business
