  1. For Sale,

My beloved pre-Gibson (carpet covered) Trace Elliot AH150 SMC amp head.

In absolutely pristine condition - only problem is that there is a screw cap missing - everything else is perfect. Carpet has no scuffs or burns or anything.

150 watts of pure english bass. Yours for £200. Would prefer collection from Coalville, Leicestershire but can deliver myself for reasonable costs.

  2. We rarely play a sponsorship gig, but when we do, its an outfit each - Jeans, and a Top, sometimes a jacket all for nowt - and when there's 5 of us in the band, that mounts up to a lot of stuff really, but its not all its cracked up to be. We have played in outlets, and at festivals, all kitted out, but its like you are a walking advertising board.

Its difficult to get in to, but when you are there, its quite good. Just get to know a decent retailer!

  3. Picked up a bass and started picking away when i was about 17 and doing some cleaning in the Perf Arts dept at college. I was doing Perf Arts at the time so knew that a guitar was EADGBE - a bass had 4 strings so must be EADG - I kind of guessed that each fret was a certain note past the E, A, D or G (depending on the string) and kind of went from there.

Wouldnt have taken it seriously if it werent for a mates acoustic duo wanting to make it into a band for the 1 year "anniversary" gig - so learned about 10 songs on a borrowed Jazz Bass and played my first gig in front of a pub full of people in May 2006 - from there the duo was scrapped and the band formed - we went on to do about 3 gigs a week for nearly 2 years, including playing at our local museum fireworks party, and headlining a closing down event at a major entertainment club "Barry Youngs Stardust".

Now we are still going, and have a clothing sponsorship, and various other endorsements - so not bad going really!

  4. Ive never really owned a big bucks bass - the most expensive one i ever owned was a Warwick Streamer Rockbass, or a Rockbass Corvette - I bought both for £120 and regret selling them.

BUT - I recently bought anew (first ever new guitar) Squier VM 70's FSR Jazz Bass (with the binding and block inlays) and it is by far the best bass ive owned or played. Sounds just right for everything i play, whether its thru a PA, my old Peavey TKO, my Trace SMC 150, or my Trace V-Type 4x8 Combo - doesnt matter.

I wouldnt even dream of upgrading anything, and im eyeing up the VM Tele Bass (in butterscotch please!).

Just goes to show that you dont need £1000's to get a decent sounding bass.

  5. A combination of all 3 work best.

What we tend to do is email first, then ring (to see if the land lord is in) and then actually visit the pub.

It might be a bit of a pain in the arse, but its worth it - we only really go out to new venues now - we put the hard work in for the first couple of years, and now we get repeat business.

One tip - if you "cold visit" a pub - make sure the landlord (or whoever) is in BEFORE you order a drink - you dont want to commit yourself to drinking a lonely pint if the landlord isnt - if he (or she) is in, then order your pint.

One thing to remember is not to give up. We tried to get in with a pub once for 3 years (we had been bad mouthed by another band) - eventually we got in thru a friend of a friend that recommended us to the pubs landlord. We played our first gig there, and was offered NYE - and 5 gigs a year there, so it was worth all the effort.

Most of the time you dont really need a demo either - just a good sense of humour and a good price.

You could always try "supporting" another covers band to try and get in at notoriously difficult places - again, we've had to do that a few times.

    Just dont give up.

  6. I auditioned as a bassist for a band once that "used to be sh*t hot, and were reforming - minus original bass player". I had been playing for about 6 years at the time and been in a few bands and knew most of the songs.

    Thought id show off..

I turned up with my full rig to this rehearsal studio (at the time i had a 2x10, 1x15 and 300w trace head, as well as a couple of basses and all my effects)

I waited in the room and set up whilst they were coming in - I saw a couple of small unnamed practice amps on the floor, and they got their squiers out and we "blasted" through a few of the songs and something just werent right.

I asked everyone during the break what their highlights were, big gigs etc - whilst the "lead" guitarist was going more and more red. Turned out that the drummer had only had about 3 lessons and had been playing for about a month. The singer was "good at karaoke", other guitarist hadnt played in front of a crowd before, and the other guitarist (that asked me along) had been in a band and played one half set of covers at a mates party once.

I promptly packed up and left.

  9. Well, following on from this, ive setup a spreadsheet that details EVERYTHING i have to spend as day to day - strings, accessories, insurance, publicity, rehearsal, and then ive got gig spend - food, drinks (both alco and non alco), distance from home to studio to pub back to studio and back home - at 45p per mile as per hmrc business rates.

Then a total received minus total spent and a +/- and so far (since April 2012) - ive made a profit of £4.34. I cant do it since we started (2006) cos ive not got records.
