1.
Fair enough... but if you say to most people "oh we do Booker T & the MG's 'Soul Limbo'", they'll go "Nah, don't know it mate". But if you tell them "oh we do that tune off the cricket on telly", they'll go "ah right, that calypsoey one, do do-do do-dooo...". Sad fact.

Had a great rehearsal last night, putting the final polish on our latest slab o' cheese... a medley of "I Want You Back" and "ABC". Bassist's dream, those two. Love it :) The next chunk of edam on our to-do list is "Disco Inferno" apparently...
We already do "I Want You Back" and "Disco Inferno" both go down a storm and great to play ( although I have to be honest and admit to playing them "in the spirit" of the songs rather than note for note )

    More cheese required !!

  2.
We do Walking On Sunshine too, it's a cracker... first verse is slow with just guitar and vocal, the punters are always singing along by the time it gets to the first "whoa-ohh" bit, then the band launches in and they go mental. And just for a laugh, we've got the cricket theme 'Soul Limbo' in the middle.
    And we do Delilah too.
    Cheese rools! :)
So thats what it's called then. Our keyboard player started playing Walking on Sunshine and I was trying to explain to the band that it sounded like the start of the cricket....might see if we can slip it in somewhere ( you can never have too much cheese when people want to dance !! )

Yes, fair comment it's an excellent song

It is probably the only song we play that the bass line can be heard on ( until our guitarist decides to play all over it of course :) )

  4. Another cracking gig playing a wedding in Tong near Bradford.

Great bride and groom, brilliant dancing guests, loads of encores and loads of nice compliments after.

We had a mini band meeting in the break and confirmed that our dep drummer is now our permanent drummer ( he is brilliant ) and also agreed that our function set and pub set should be dramatically different ( I have emails going back two years requesting this and at long last they are listening ) so practice on Tuesday is more cheese ( raining men, walking on sunshine etc ) :)

  5. Cross Keys at Morley near Leeds with the added pressure of video recording the gig ( looks good this morning ) and Col from local band Mojo bringing along his 10 track recorder to record the gig ( first cut will be about a week )

A few more mistakes than normal ( all on the simple songs that I never really practice !! ) but all in all I think it will turn out good.

Good atmosphere in the pub with plenty of friends along to support us and the recently installed stage was an absolute dream to play on. I even had room to put both bass's on stands rather than stacking them at the back of the drums or on a shelf.

Great gig and roll on next Saturday !!

  6. 40th birthday party at the Stone Chair Variety club in Shelf near Halifax with yet another excellent dep drummer who once again we had not met prior to the gig !!

We were asked to play our first set before the food which is always ( imho ) the wrong way round as there seems to be a physcological barrier to dancing before people have eaten. We kept it quite short as the food looked gorgeous ( and was..... I had mushy peas and naan bread !! )

Second set was much livelier and the alcohol had filtered through enough to get the dance floor full.

Funniest part was our guitarist who broke a string in the first song in our four song funk medley. We kept playing but he couldn't find his spare guitar !! he had put it under a table we had put the mixer on so it was out of the way.....quite an amusing site watching him run about looking for it !!

Cross Keys at Morley tonight to record ( audio and video ) the gig so bound to be more mistakes than normal !!

  7. First and foremost it has to be a good song with something "special" that captivates me and if it has a great bass line then that's a bonus however I do have to admit to songs "growing" on me that I previously wasn't too keen on.

When I see a full dance floor loving what we are playing ie mama mia, disco inferno, I want You Back etc then I start to love the song !!

  8. That is so sad to lose someone who was obviously loved so much and at such a young age.

It really confirms that life is just too precious and everyday must be enjoyed.

Sincere condolences to his family and thinking of you in this difficult time.

I know it's not the same but being on this forum feels like "family"

  9. Our drummer ( who was excellent ) had to leave the band suddenly due to a hearing problem and we had to get a dep in ( he had never heard or played with us ) and he was brilliant and added another dimension to the band ( it also takes the adrenalin to another level :) )

Get a dep and do the gig !!

  10. Deer Park pub in Rudding Park caravan park in Harrogate and it was f*****g awesome !!

Full dance floor from the very first second all through to the last note, 6 more bookings at more money for next year and two parties from members of the audience.

Apparently they are now getting a good amount of repeat bookings from people who want to stay on the weekends we play which is a pretty nice feeling.

Played Superstition for the first time and it went down brilliant.

All in all a cracking gig !!

  11. Thanks for answering the question as I must admit I wasn't sure exactly what model it is.

Still need to get it out of the wardrobe and play it more but since I bought my Geddy Lee Jazz I just don't seem to play anything else as it just seems such an easy bass to play !!

  12. Just "bumping" this up to the top to remind people to post as I like to read the reviews on a Sunday morning.

Bit late this but we played last Thursday and Friday ( Queen Vic at Northowram and the Barge at Brighouse ) with yet another "never met before the gig" drummer depping for us but no worries as he was excellent and by the second night it was as if he had been playing with us for years. He is playing with us again tonight so looking forward to another lively gig.

One little tip that is worth passing on is that I always take my ipod to gigs to test the pa ( we rarely sound check these days ) and for backing music and he used it to listen to a few of the songs that he wasn't too familiar with through earphones to get an idea how the song went. It certainly did the trick.

    Footnote

Low point of the Thursday gig was when we were loading up the dep drummer found his van had been broken in to and some personal stuff and his drum mic's had gone.......bloody annoying !!

  13. There are a few songs we are doing that he just plays a strumming guitar intro that wants something a little more than a root note behind it to fill it out ( Drops of Jupiter by Train for example ) so I want to be able to play my bass ( with a keyboard sound ) then hit a pedal and keep playing my bass ( with the bass sounds coming out ) without having to switch from keys to bass or switch anything on a rack etc

    Hope this make sense lol

  14.
We played the Cross Keys in Morley on Friday and it was a good gig with the pub about half full, with a bit of dancing going on. Our drummer Ian had a bad back but struggled on. Yesterday we played the Shay in Halifax to about 5 people! Ian still had a stiff back and Vikki our singer was ill - she had to run off after the first set and upchuck.
Second set went okay and we still put on a decent show which is difficult without much response!
Same happened to us at the Shay eighteen months ago. I think the punk bands that play it get bigger crowds. A drummer friend of mine's band are playing it later this year so I am sure he will tell me how it goes. We are at the Key's later this month so hope we manage to draw a good crowd as we are going to video the gig.

  15. I recently attended the bass bass in Bingley and was a bit restricted for time but I heard a couple of guys playing a bass that sounded just like a keyboard ( I am assuming it was midi but i am a complete novice with regard to this )

At the time I was playing soul/funk and rock but I have recently joined up with a singer/guitarist and there are many songs where a little bit of keyboard type sounds would sound better ( and fuller ) rather than just a low bass note.

Can someone point me in the direction of what i would need etc ( probably from a budget point of view to start....true Yorkshireman !! )

    Many thanks

    Tony
