1.
I've lived here since I was born in 1842 , so to explain the major differences , and the only ones worth mentioning........

Here in West Yorks we fry fish and chips properly in beef dripping - a fishcake is scraps of fish between 2 large slices of spud fried in batter. Fish is defined as cod or haddock.

In South Yorks - if you ask for a fishcake you get a poncy mashed potato thing the size of a 10p piece. You have to ask for a patty which sounds stupid , you musn't say please or thankyou , and you have to have a fight with somebody while you wait.

In North Yorks - you may be asked if you want plaice , the chips are ordered by the 'packet' rather than the 'bag' and cost £83 per portion , it's traditional to set your dog on a fox before eating your meal in any 4x4 vehicle that's 'not foreign'.

Over to the east is Humberside , where nobody admits to living , insisting instead that it's East Yorks. Or East Riding if you're over the age of 70 - which nobody is - mostly because they eat fish and chips 17 times per day - and the dozy sods leave the skin on. Euugh. There are some really pretty towns around here where fresh fish used to be landed until the Spanish stole them all. Neither of these towns are Hull or Grimsby. Don't ever go to either.

Going through passport control at Todmorden you enter Lancashire , though I can't recall why you'd want to. Here you must tell the folk in the fish shop that you actually find Peter Kaye funny. Mimic his accent if you must , it's easy - simply form everything into a question. ie. 'it's cold outside, is it not?'
The fish is caught off the west coast - a tad too close to Sellafield for me - possibly the reason your portion has more than one tail and still burns your lips when it's cold.

Hope this clears up any confusion.

Next Week...............Lahndahn town - and how the fish and chips were so much nicer in the old days when the 'twins' were around 'the manor' and the Queen Mahm fried them all personally - 'gawd bless 'er'
If only all geography lessons were this informative I might have passed my eleven plus !!

  2. I think that the occasional bit brings a song to life so I am determined to improve until I have the confidence to put the occasional fill in. I am also working to understand exactly how to do the "car wash" fill but watching the youtube vids is confusing

Anyone in the Yorkshire area got a free few hours to show me just how to get it right with perhaps a few other slap riffs for other occasions ??

  3. When using plugs I really miss the audience reaction and thinking of switching to IEM and setting a mic up to pick up the ambient noise and feed it through.

Rest of the band are unlikely to go the same way ( not keen on spending the money ) so it will probably just be me looking at doing it on a budget.

    Any thoughts/ideas ??

  4. Bit late this as it is from last Sat night at the Three Horses in Keighley which was not quite as busy as our first visit ( bloody freezing night and the strictly/x factor stay ins seem to be affecting sat nights a the moment )

Small playing area so hemmed in between guitarist's amp and snare so glad I had my plugs but when I use them ( always ) I hear me and the band ok but not the "atmosphere" of the gig so thinking I might go for some in ear monitors and just set up a mic at the front ( always nice to hear the audience clap/shout etc )

Bit of a "playing for fun rather than note for note gig" and despite huge reservations from two of the band we gave Delilah it's debut as second encore and it doubled the numbers on the dance floor !!

    Roll on next Friday !!!

  5. I got pretty down about my ears a few weeks ago as I seemed to be getting lots of post gig noise that seemed to last much longer than normal but i started taking more care ( using blockers etc ) turning my car cd down and stopped watching other bands for a bit and it has diminished dramatically ( I also realised that the head cold I had was affecting it as well )

I think the ear infection you mention will also have an affect

Hope it all clears up for you

    Tony

  6.
I play in a covers band. I've always played in a covers band. Well I played in an originals for a few gigs but I replaced somebody else, so it was still a covers band for me. Anyway, you get to that bit at the end of the night where (yes I know it's cheesy...) the singer intros the band, everybody plays a little solo... except me. I don't have a clue what to play. I've never improvised in any meaningful way or played a solo in my life.

Can anybody help me not look like an idiot? :)
Same with me and at the time we are usually playing Signed, Sealed Delivered so I would be interested to hear what I could improvise with for a bar or two !!

  7. As a side project I recently formed a trio with a good drummer and a singer guitarist who at the moment has got the lions share of the learning to do as he is doing all the vocals and all the guitar parts and I want to try to push things along a lot faster by trying to get another half dozen or so songs in the set that involve minimal learning on the guitar but mean I may have a bit of work to do.

As an example I have recently suggested Start by the Jam as it is a great bass song and I think the guitar part will be relatively easy. We are also doing things like Riverboat Song by OCS and Joe Jackson's Is She Really Going Out With Him

Anyone suggest any good pop/rock songs that would fit this criteria but are not overplayed in pubs ??

Many thanks in advance, I am confident that there will be some brilliant suggestions rolling in soon.

    Tony

  8.
I got em, thanks for the heads up PB.

I would have paid £30 for the cabs alone, the speaker untis dont have a power rating on them so I have contacted Fane to see if they can give me any info.

I have put the bass through them and they sound good, no farty sounds.
Thanks for buying them. I don't really need them at the moment but they were just tempting me too much !!

  9. We played the Rock Cafe in Huddersfield on Thursday which was an excellent venue with a very lively crowd in. There was a group of about 20 ladies in celebrating a birthday so we got the birthday girl up with one of her friends for the chorus on Mustang ( see pic )

An excellent gig and roll on the next one ( two week break :) )

  10. New pub for us as we travelled north to the Harlow Inn at Harrogate

Easy load in and set up with plenty of room.

Very friendly crowd but slightly confusing as a quarter of the pub were really up for it and others quite subdued but mid second set we won them over and had a good dance floor going

Bit of a disjointed gig as our guitarist broke 3 !! yes 3 "A" strings so during Mustang we played without him so he could re-string ( only had two guitars with him )

All in another good gig and getting used to my ER20's now ( and feeling so much better post gig and morning after )

    Gigs

  11. I was in specsavers today for a hearing test but had to book first.

All seemed fine with very little loss but I need to get my ears syringed before they can take the moulds for the custom fit plugs

Service was superb and the hearing test was free !!
