1. Always. Just working on crossovers for the next run of ML112 cabs. There's no quitting time when you own your own company!
2. We have been talking with Bass Direct and a couple other shops, but nothing definite yet. If you have a favorite shop, let them know you are interested in the gear... it may help get the ball rolling!
3.
I think ALL engineers, no matter how difficult they find it, should find time to get the aesthetics right. Heck, they are probably missing a huge chunk of the market. The Baer's look great though
Appreciate the compliment. One thing to keep in mind is that a company like Ampeg builds in such large quantities that having things like custom hardware and grills made is not an issue. Something like the rounded corners of a TC Electronics cab, or custom yellow drivers like the MarkBass gear is no big deal in the volumes they work at, but it would add a ton of money to the final price of a product that we make. For our products, we tried to focus more on a simple, classic design, which let us spend our money on things like high quality drivers and crossovers.
4. We are working on finding a distributor in the UK, but your'e correct that by the time you add on shipping and all the related fees and taxes, it does drive the cost up considerably.
5. There's a certain interaction I get from tubes, that I just haven't experienced with a solid state amp. I usually like my preamp set fairly high, just shy of tube breakup. This lets me ease up a bit a keep things clean sounding, while letting me really dig in for something like a chorus, or guitar solo and throw a bit of grit into the mix. And an all tube power section is just heaven for me. Sure, some solid state amps sound "tube like", but I haven't heard one yet that will put a smile on my face like an all tube head will.
6. Thanks Steve-Soar. I keep fairly active on TalkBass, but some players there from the UK have suggested that I get more active with BassChat as well. Sounds like good advise to me and it's a great site to keep up on what's happening in the bass world on the other side of the pond. Cheers!
7. I'm not too worried about the valve market disappearing anytime soon, but the neo market could be another matter. For the moment, the neo market is very wrapped up in Chinese politics, so it can always go either way at a moments notice. While I'm hoping for some short term stability soon, the long term outlook certainly isn't great. There's just no getting around the fact that mining neo is an environmental nightmare and while other countries may jump into the game, don't expect this to drive down neo prices on the world market anytime soon.
8.
Just got a TH500 and was ready to buy a sl112 and it went out of stock (at least at reasonable prices). I've been reading some topics here and other forums and it seems that are better options to the sl112's.. I'm tempted to go for a Vanderkley MNT112 or EXT112 (i have considered the Baer ML112 but there's no dealer in Europe), but it's a shot in the dark since it's very dificult to try any good gear here in Portugal...
I've have been talking with Mark over at Bass Direct about carrying our gear, so hopefully we will have that set up sometime soon. If you contact them and let them know you are interested in trying the gear out, it would help let them know there is interest in the UK for our products. Roger
9.
Interesting to apply the word 'boutique' to these cabs.. The Baer is about the only one that is getting there in terms of the pics and then they go and spoil it with the handles and footpads, IMO.
Hey all, Just discovered this thread and thought I would pop on. The rubber handle was chosen because it is comfortable on the hand and makes the cab an easy one-hand carry. When it comes to bottom protection, you can either go rubber footpads, or plastic corners. The rubber footpads get the cab up of the floor a bit and help provide some vibration relief, all of which can help on a boomy platform stage. Feet were added to the side of the cab as most guys using just one ML112 tend to turn the cab on end to get the mid driver up closer to your ear. Roger Baer
