1. I am hoping one of the more techy among you can help me, I have tried a few things that don't seem to be working, and I consistently have a grounding issue causing lots of humming and buzzing. I have rewired this circuit (which was buzzing before) with all new parts, following the fender guide for an elite below. I have a foil backed pickguard and I am sure I followed the guide as supposed, but I still get the buzzing which clicks as you touch any of the parts. Can you see anything that looks wrong? What would be the best test to find the problem (I have a multimeter)? Apologies for the sh*t picture the bridge is grounded to the control, each green wire comes from the pickup and is grounded to the relevant controls. The red wires are hot wires from the pups. The capacitor is cut off on the pic but the tone is doing it's job. I admit I don't know what 18 is in the pic above, I have the rest of the circuit as displayed
 2.
There are other two ways to do it without loosing the tone control: 1) Replace the tone pot with a push/pull. The push/pull switch can be used to switch between cap and diodes. 2) Use a 500k pot wired as follows: mid contact: ground contact #1: to diodes contact #2: to cap the sides of the diodes/cap not connected to the pot are bot connected to the signal (i.e. out jack) When the pot is set in the middle, the clipping and tone are not active. One one side, it increases the clipping, on the other side it closes the tone. It should do the trick.
Brilliant, I might have to get some pictures up here to check but this is the way forward
 3.
My custom EB3 has an overdrive built into it, the circuit was made by JayDee & is tiny - he says it's very simple. It's sits between the pots in a slightly enlarged control cavity & has a control for it on the scratchplate. The back also has a flip up battery holder cut into it. I can't take pics of the inside as it has an allover rear scartchplate which is fixed onto the guitar in starnge ways that I can't get undone around the battery holder. Maybe you could get in touch with a Gibson EB3 user to take pics of the fuzz-tone in one of them. That'll be my next project when I can be arsed. Making an Epi EB3 up to Gibson spec.
amazing, how does it sound? do you have any clips?
 4.
Artec onboard distortion.
well that's just a gem! now will it fit into my telebass project I wonder? at only $25 it's got to be worth a pop, thanks
 5.
It might be an idea to look at the Build Yer Own Clone kits and see if any are suitably small to build in. You might be able to fit one or two into a control cavity or as with the old MPC Electra's in the 70s, the FX cartridges fitted into the rear of the bass body, more or less in the centre. I suspect this requires some reinforcing of the body but I'm not sure. Just out of interest, Chris Squire still uses his MPC Electra Bass which has effects built in (up to 2 at any one time). Think he's been using it since the late 70s. Here's what Wikipedia says about MPC Electra: In 1976 Electra MPC (Modular Powered Circuits) models featured a pair of cartridge slots in the guitar body, which allowed effect modules to be plugged in and controlled from the front of the guitar. Today the unusual thing is that the effects are onboard, but even offering electronic effects to consumer musicians was fairly new at the time and offers an interesting alternate way to do it. There were a total of 18 guitar models which carried MPC circuits. The most notable was the Super Rock, which was a Les Paul copy. There were 12 total MPC modules offered.
1976! I bet they are worth a fortune now, I have never seen one. Will definitely have a further look
 6.
Me and a friend built a Boss DS-1/2 into Squier Katana guitar in about '89......
pictures?!?
 7. Thought I would throw this one out there as i couldn't find an existing thread. So I know Matt Bellamy is infamous for his Kaos pad and theramin thing built into guitars, but has anyone else tried this? I was thinking simple tasteful fuzz circuit that could use a blend and gain, with an on and off switch. How small do these circuits get? I guess Catalinbred manage to fit them in a pretty small surface area http://www.mojofunk.org/MikeSpace/wp-conte...itar_1_back.jpg

 10.
You could have a point there..... I was expecting a nut that didn't need any filing but now I think of it that's probably all it would have needed. Too late now though I've bought the allparts neck. Anybody fancy a 2nd hand Jazz Bass neck from C H Guitars........going cheap
Even after that report I am tempted to shoot off a pm! I must have some sort of problem...! Checking out the allparts before I do though
 11.
Best preamp ever!
I am sure tyron will agree when his arrives!
 12. thanks all, this gives me something to think about, might hang tight for a squire or fender jazz neck to appear
 13.
Hi there mate Just to clarify, could this still be used with a power amp and other rack units then put through a set of cabinets? Also, do all the lights work on the front of the amp? Cheers dude
Yes definately, it will work just as any other pre-amp would, only the power stage has been removed. It has an xlr DI output, and a send/return with volume level All the lights are fully operational (rings behind switches light up) PM's replied!
 14. I bought this off the bay a couple of months back, it has been working perfectly for me just as promised, but I need something smaller that I can cart to practise/gigs. Here is the blurb as I read it This pre-amp owes me £80 which I would like to see returned! "There’s a little bit of a story here. It started life as a 600watt (I think) head and after several breakdowns the power section finally burned up completely. This is really rather common in these early Trace’s, the tone is second to none but the ouput stage reliability shocking. Anyway, after a bit of discussion I came to a plan and ripped out all the power stage rubbish and turned it into a 100% authentic studio pre-amp. It still weighs a ton from the massive transformer but oh my god the tone!!! Features include a true high voltage tube preamp which is blendable with a solid state one. Powerful graphic EQ. Separate High and Low frequency compressors with blend. Effects loop and balanced XLR output. I’ve had it for years now and cut loads of tracks with it but I’m downsizing so, sadly, it’s gotta go. Of all the things I’m selling letting this one go is really tough. So just to clarify: 1) I have worked for years as a pro repair guy (not one of these two-bit ones who work in guitar shops and ruin peoples gear I add!) who has worked at many major studios including BBC ones so it’s 100% safe and totally reliable. 2) There is NO power amplifier from this and it will never drive a speaker without an additional amplifier, rack or otherwise! 3) As a studio pre-amp it is one of the best sounding things in the world!" There you have it, I can definitely vouch for the tone on this thing, and the blend on the valve is heavenly to work with This is pretty heavy, so I would prefer collection, but may be able to work out postage? 15. Ableton is a very popular choice for live performance, see http://www.ableton.com/downloads you can trigger midi or audio loops easily that are quantized in time. It is also great for recording and has decent onboard sounds. It only comes with basic plugins, but you can get hold of others pretty easily. Download it and try it for 30 days, work through the tutorials and see what you think
 16.
i think the Allparts UK necks are Mighty Mite, expensive new though.
good to know, will look into them
 17.
I bought a maple Mighty Mite Jazz neck from an ebay seller in the states, cost about 75 quid shipped in total - all import fees included. This was about 18 months ago though. Took a long time to come but looks like a great neck, however, i'm actually yet to fit it
fancy selling her??!
 18. So I have just started a little project and need a replacement jazz neck. It seems the UK market is particularly painful on this though, no one seems to stock mighty mite or warmoth that I can find?? So I have found a couple of other options, but I can't for the life of me gauge how good they are and why the price difference is so much. Option A. Friendly Korean neck, relatively inexpensive http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...IT#ht_500wt_928 Option B. Nearly 100 smackers more, looks the same http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/product/Jazz_Bass...ar_Finish_JM-CL Can anyone give an insight or alternative here? Budget is hopefully around £100, second hand is totally fine too Thanks!
 19. £252 as the reocurring theme - rent for a lovely beach view apartment?
