1. I would have prefered a bass only show but I suppose this is the future.
 2. I've just got back. Was not impressed as I thought bass and guitar would be completely separated. Can we have separate shows again? I felt that bass was relegated to the under the stairs, while the six string "guitar gods" made the aural environment unbearable.
 3. Does anyone have or know where I can find a bass tab for "The Teams That Meet in Caffs" By Dexy's Midnight Runners? Thanks in advance

Will check them out tonight.
 5. Last week, I went to Chappell of Bond Street, now confusingly located in Wardour Street, to find the sheet music for Frankly Mr Shankley by The Smiths. I was very disappointed. They had a huge selection of sheet music (approx 5,000 books) but only 10-20 books of bass sheet music consisting of either tuition books or the usual suspects (e.g. Stanley Clarke). I could find sheet music for the Songs of Travis on the Ukulele, but not for the bass guitar. Does anyone have any recommendations for where I can purchase sheet music. Either in London or as a last resort on-line. Thanks in advance for your help
 6.
It was called Goodbye Pork Pie Hat and it is an old Charles Mingus tune! Hope that helps! Cheers Mark
Thanks Gunsfreddy2003. Its a bit embarrasing that I have "If Only My Bass Could Talk" on vinyl but have not played it for a long time since I have no reliable way of transfering it to an MP3 player.
 7. Dear All I was at the concert at the Jazz Cafe in London on 22-05-2008. What was the name of the tune he opened the concert with before "Lopsy Lu". It is driving me mad as the riff seems very familiar. Anyone in the community know?
 8.
Ooh, I forgot that one, that's my other fave Stan album. Isn't he over playing the Jazz Cafe soon?
I wrote a post about this and it is located here.
 9. After completing the So how did you learn to play? poll, I decided to add the details of the excellent tutor I have been seeing. I will let his words tell the story...
THE TEACHING: I have very broad experience and interests, and so am able to teach a wide range of styles – classical, jazz, pop, rock and folk. You can go through an existent course book, but many people prefer a course which is based on pieces which they choose. EXAMINATIONS: You do not have to take exams - I always advise people to play what they like playing. But as an experienced Examiner, I can prepare you well, if you wish or need to take an exam. WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING ?: You can bring your own instrument or one will be provided. This is also true of amplification. I provide all music, unless I advise you otherwise (this can happen when the cost of a book or piece of music is high). RESOURCES: I have all the resources here – guitars, music, CD player, recording gear. I can help you create an arrangement and make your own CD – impress your friends ! You do not have to bring an instrument, if this is inconvenient. WHERE: In my studio at my home in Camden Town (10 minutes walk from the Tube). Profile of Edward Lee Qualifications and experience: Degree in Music (Oxford) AMus LCM Diploma in Composition Performance: Many years professional playing and teaching experience (guitar, bass guitar, piano, composer/arranger). One album (Open Spaces, Transatlantic Records) Examiner: Formerly External Examiner for University of York and Goldsmiths’ College (University of London) and member of Advisory Panel for Bass Guitar Examinations (Registry of Guitar Tutors), Electric Guitar Examiner (RGT), Examiner for General Panel (classical) of London College of Music; currently member of advisory panel for Acoustic Guitar exams (RGT) Publications: Many books and articles, notably...

Pop Music in School (Cambridge University Press)
Music of the People (Routledge)
Jazz : An Introduction (Stanmore Press)
Musical London (Omnibus Press)
Teacher Training: Worked for many years in teacher training, and so very familiar with the needs of school teachers and students. The book Pop Music in School is a set text in many teacher training courses. [[email protected]][email protected].
10. As a newbie I went straight to a tutor, and I have a lesson a week every week. My feeling is that the problem with self teaching is that you pick up very bad habits/techniques which will be very difficult to correct even with the best bass tutor in the planet. The tutor has provide guidance using [acronym=""Registry of Guitar Tutors""]R.G.T.[/acronym] Exam Structure for learning the boring things such as Scales, Arpeggios and Musical Theory. This allows me to take exams if I want to. I can also supply him with my favourite music, which he translates into tabs and standard musical notation so I can practice to CDs.
 11.
The Bass Love is in Manchester on the 9th of November 2008... this is when we're doing another Bass Day UK. It's all still early days, so I can't say much about it so far, other than the date and location. Will we see you there then?
Will Bass Day have anything to offer a complete novice?

 13.
Thanks for the heads up re Stanly Clark - what day did you book for ? P
I have tickets for the Thursday. More expensive but more convenient for me.
 14. I do not know if this is the right place to put this. If not could a Moderator please move this topic to the correct forum. One of my favourite performers Stanley Clarke is performing at The Jazz Cafe, Camden, London on 20/05/2008 to 22/05/2008. Details can be found here. Another one of my favourites Guru's Jazzmatazz is also performing at The Jazz Cafe, Camden, London on 11/03/2008 to 13/03/2008. Details can be found here, but might not be to everybody's taste. I have already bought my tickets and hope, for the Stanley Clarke performances, we can get a full house with Basschat members.
 15.
There are some lessons in pdf format at http://www.fenderplayersclub.com/woodshed/bass/bass.htm Not exactly comprehensive, but there's enough there to get you going.
Thanks Musky. This is exactly what I am looking for.
http://www.studybass.com/ is pretty good - something for everyone in there.
Thanks Machines. I have looked at this site before. The problem is that you need to be on-line. What I am really looking for is a tutorial book for beginners in PDF format I can print off and use off-line. Thanks anyway.
 17. Dear All A response to posting Recommended Bass Dealers in London. This is Grand Puba again. I have finally purchased a Bass and ancillaries from Sound Control. I purchased a

Yamaha RBX170
Peavey Microbass Amplifier
I found that Sound Control was not really helpful and I would like to thank all the people who help me in my previous post and to Dave Brown, a work colleague whose love of the Bass, helped overcome Sound Control's shortcomings. I am in the process of organising a tutor but until then, Is there any free downloadable resources preferably in the PDF format that I can use to kick start self learning. Thanks in advance for your replies.
 18. As a new and late bass player wannabe, just starting out, I think that the collective music shops had better pull their fingers out and get their acts together. The next generation of bass players take their lead from the current generation. Failing to satisfy the current generation wiil mean the next generation wiil purchase their first bass from the internet or eBay. The only advantage a shop has is the personal touch that gets a costomer coming back again and again even if the store is tens of miles away. They are cutting off their noses now to spite their faces in ten years time.
 19.
Horses head?! Darling, that is SO retro. We like to do it with a little more style these days - say a blue budgie on a black napkin and a sprig of mint? And a rentacrowd with backwards haircuts and skinny jeans to applaud WILDLY and say we all look gorgeous? We are SO worth it, let me call my people now and we'll set it up for 3am next Tuesday, yah?
Just a final note to say thanks to all the people who replied to the message. CrazyKiwi - Thanks for the offer. I might take you up on it if my work collegue is to busy to help. I have decided to wait until January to purchase from Sound Control. See if there are any discounts to be had. Thanks Again
 20.
Well, based on a trip down Denmark St last Saturday I can't honestly recommend any of the shops there except Hanks, and they don't sell basses. Though we didn't manage to get to Wunjos, so I can't comment on them. Macaris, a bit further down Charing Cross Rd is still a proper music shop but I don't know what stock they carry. God knows what happened to the Bass Cellar since Simone left, but they have a distinctly odd idea of customer service. There was a notice on the wall which said something like 'Want a bass, but got no money? Well don't waste our time!' I think that's appalling. The chances are that you will find a better deal in the second hand pages on this forum. It might still be worth going down to a couple of dealers to see what's available, just leave your cheque book at home. The place with the biggest stock of basses in your range is probably the Bass Centre in Brune St, round the back of Liverpool St Station. Customer service is extremely variable but can be very good. The Bass Gallery is the dealer of choice for many basschatters, but they don't carry a lot of low-end stock.
Thanks Pete
 21.
Disagree with the above. If your budget is £100 then it makes sense but if you can afford better then get better.
My budget is about £250 for the bass and £100 - £150 for ancilleries.
 22. Dear all I apologise in advance if I have posted this message in the wrong place. First time poster and a novice in the world of the bass guitar. I have always wanted to play and now have found the time and budget. The Basschat membership has started me on the correct path. A work collegue has agreed to assist me in navigating the ocean that is purchasing my first bass and the site membership have provided me a short list for starter basses. (The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass, maybe The Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass but I will be trying others). The one step that all members seem to agree on is that you must try before you buy. So I am looking for a dealer big enough to have a good selection of low end basses, but small enought to give me the personal service and time, I will need to get the package I will be satified with. The dealer should love and be knowledgable about all things bass. So who is the best bass dealer in London, for a novice just starting out.
