1.
Does the bodywork chrome not look a little shiny compare to the machineheads?? It's almost as if the neck came from one bass and the body from another. Some of the solder looks very shiney too. If it was a car I would think it was a reshell
As stated in the ad, the covers are reissue. See more on this thread for further clarity. Thanks
 2.
Interesting! .. he bought this in March:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=390294556498 and some 54 pots and amber shellac a bit later (his Selling profile is Private .. but not the Buying). Could it be the same bass?
Bl**dy Hell Sherlock, you have some free time!! LOL I joke This is my bass for sale. Regarding your investigation; 1. The shellac purchased was for an ageing job i did on a tweed amp, you wouldnt use shellac amber tint for a guitar, you'd use amber nitrocellulose lacquer 2. The pots i bought were 1954 pots, and, ahem, dated 1954. I still have those pots, they were purchased because they were too cheap not to. 3. The pots on the bass for sale are '55 pots, and dated 1955. They are original to the bass. 4. The '56 i bought from NKR is completely different, the body/neck are clearly different. wood/grain. The wear on the '56 is extensively worn. The bass for sale is a complete '55 bass, not a bitsa whatsoever. It has been professionally nitro refin'd, which is now very weather checked and cracked, starting to age nicely. Very rare in the UK, and not an unreasonable price, based on current vintage prices. NKR has a beat up '59 for £10k...for example. Only sell to fund another purchase, otherwise i'd leave it in the collection. Sensible offers considered, i've had a few, and some random trade offers?!?! Someone even offered me a Ford S-Max!! Seriously. LOL Must sell Hope this clarifies the story above. Feel free to ask anything. Should i list in on here , in the For sale section? Regards to all. Rick.
 3.
Never mind, I'm sure you'll be able to afford a new bass one day. Lovely collection you've got there.
Thanks Rhys. To be honest, new basses don't do it for me...as you can see. Even the new Fenders are just too tight, too responsive, too trebly, too bright. the old ones are soft, and warm, and sooo smooth sounding, and the necks play like butter. They're like an old pair of jeans, or an old pair of Adidas Superstars, they just feel right...every time you wear 'em. I've never played a new...ish bass, and thought "Oooh, that's nice". Actually that's not strictly true, i did play an Alembic Stanley Clarke which i could quite happily have taken home!
 4.
Can I borrow your 52 P bass tomorrow night for the British Legion Tango and Samba night??
It's the only Bass I take on those gigs!! You'll need the tweed bassman too though!
 5.
Amazing, truly amazing collection - thank you so much for sharing! Especially love the 58's (my gosh, three of them!) and the 52's are sooooo nice.
Thanks, technically one is a '59, as the body is dated 3/59, although the neck/pots etc, are all dated late '58. Sorry, i sense myself getting geeky....i tend to do that when talking about my vintage stuff. The 52's are very special. Hopefully be a couple of new additions in the coming weeks, watch this space.
 6.
Amazing collection.
Thanks, it's taken a while to build up, there's still a few on the wish list though! So far I've sold 3 children and 2 kidneys............none of which were my own!! (That was a joke....just in case the CID are reading this)
 7.
I'm not really into vintage Fenders, but those are amazing. I would love to have one just to hold it and imagine what's happened to it in the last 60 years .
I know what you mean, you certainly get that feeling when you're playing them, if only they could talk, there'd be a few cool stories to tell, thats for sure!
 8.
Wow! That is a true vintage bass collection! Truckstop
Thanks Truckstop, i appreciate the comment.
 9.
This is like a Howard Carter Tutankhamen moment without the sand or surprise. Stunning !
Hopefully without the Curse!!! thanks for the comments.
 10.
Rick, welcome to Basschat. I wouldn't be **ss** because, well, what can you do? The pic is probably copyright anyway. (Maybe I shouldn't say that out loud.)
Decided to use my '52 as my avatar.....should be safe with that!
 11.
Rick, welcome to Basschat. I wouldn't be **ss** because, well, what can you do? The pic is probably copyright anyway. 12.
Veeery interesting. Your JV Jazz is historic. My Precisions are but a humble JV1 '57 and a JV2 '62. I didn't realise before that covers disappeared with the logo change (I seem to recall a big-Fender-small-Squier J with no cover holes - that I missed, alas - but maybe t'was an anomaly, or I'm mistaken). Pretty nuts to be talking about these when we could be discussing real '52 neck profiles but, hey, I'm just chipping in where I can PS Bad news. The excellent Mr 99ster uses the black and white Elvis pic...
There were some anolmolies during that transition in mid '82, so you're probably right, shame you missed out on that one !! We can talk '52 neck profiles, i have two, they aint small!! I'll try another avatar pic, I'm new today, i'll get there!
 13.
Hello
Hey..I'm new here today, and had this pic as my avatar, someone told me you'd be pi**ed, so i changed it, it would appear this is also taken!! Must try harder i guess!!
 14.
actually made tea come out my nose
Hey, i see you're also from northants. Good morrow neighbour.
 15.
Lovely! Thanks for posting. Those '58s... argh... Geek alert: as another brace-of-JVs person, may I inquire if yours came with bridge/pickup covers?
Thanks for the comment, JV's are just fab, i love them. My Precision didnt, i added those. The Jazz is a bit special though, it was the one exhibited by Fender Japan, when they initially showcased them to the World, along with a Stratocaster. My Jazz has the earliest known neck date for a JV, and is featured on the JV site. It came with both covers, and also the string mutes fitted. They wanted it to be a true replica, as you know, they were too good, so in mid '82, after just 2 months, they removed all the 'extras' such as mutes, covers, and changed from large fender, small squire decal, to large squire, small fender decal. The 'slab' rosewood boards lasted until mid '83 (Presumably o use up stocks?), when the laminated boards took over. Mine has a JV00 serial, the Precision is a JV0.

 18.
Essential tension might have something to say about your avatar though
Eh?? I love that pic of Elvis at Graceland with the Precision!! I'm too young to remember though!!
 19.
Seeing things on Basschat often surprises me, but I think this is the very first time I can truthfully say that I've been STUNNED. (BTW Young People, that's the old spelling of Gobsmacked). An original '58 is my ultimate dream (that old Y.O.B. thang). Fantastic collection you have there. Where have you been all this time ...and can I get one of my sons to marry one of your daughters? Phil
Thanks for the compliments on my collection, my first proper vintage bass i sought was also a '58, the gold anodized guard, with the 3-tone and maple neck, is one of the most beautiful things Leo made, no doubt, thats what got me hooked, having got that, i wanted a '56, then a '52, it's very addictive though!!
