...that will come closest to a double-bass sound. I know it is impossible to emulate a DB sound on anything other than a DB, but I'll be using it exclusively for jazz and classical music. I'm not into Jaco's sound, mwha, etc. I've had a few brief attempts at playing an EUB, but would much prefer a bass guitar. It wouldn't bother me if it had or didn't have fret lines. I'd like to get my hands on the top of the range model. I bought the Chinese version for my daughter a few years ago, but she never took to it, and we eventually sold it. But when I played it, I felt the instrument was a bit stiff, the sound a bit wooly, if that makes any sense. It seemed well made, but not "alive", somehow. I assume the top model would be a lot better, though at a price. But the Chinese one looked great, and, with a few misgivings, was fun to play.

I didn't know that - the absence of the wood block. So, it's a true archtop.

Hi again (it has been a few years since my last visit) from Edinburgh. Just thought I'd say hello. I got a Danelectro "Dead On 58" a few days ago. I tried stringing it with Thomastik short-scale flats - all went well until the fourth string, which was too thick for the tuner hole. I yanked it through, and ruined the string. The guitar is ok, but I'm left with three flats and one low E roundwound. Any recommendations for a flatwound 4th that might fit through the hole? Anyway, I love this bass already. Such a great neck. The tone is to my liking, which is just as well, as no matter where I turn the tone knobs to, it always sounds the same! I just bought these three books - Standard Lines, Blues and Rhythm Changes. If nothing else, they are brilliant for improving your sight reading, taking you through all 12 keys. But they are more than that, and I'm looking forward to getting more familiar with them. Thanks to Steven Mooney for writing them. I've only had them a week, but feel my walking lines have more structure and direction already. No sound files, though, or backing tracks, just notes, notes, notes, mastery of which will make you very popular on the jazz circuit. Not for the lazy student...

I put those La Bella Deep Talkin strings on my fretless today - what a great sound! But I am aiming for a double-bass sound, which might not be what the OP is looking for.

I play jazz, think Kind Of Blue, Miles Smiles, etc, and presently play a cheap but very good Vintage Bubinga fretless, which sounds great acoustically with La Bella tapewounds. I have up to five hundred pounds to spend on an amp - I learned long ago to spend more on the amp than the instrument. Your suggestions, please. Small/portable would be appreciated. I will be playing small bar gigs in a trio setting. I have a PJ Bass Buddy to add to the mix. Currently I have a Line 6 LD15, which colours the sound way too much for my liking. Cheers, Rob

Just saying hello. I live and teach in Edinburgh - www.GuitarLessonsEdinburgh.com but I'm here because I feel the desire to improve my bass skills. I'm a jazz bass player by inclination, but find myself doing all sorts. At 51, my main gigging days are behind me, but I still love exploring and sharing. My gear these days is low spec - the newish Squire Jaguar Special and the Vintage V940f fretless. I have two amps, a Line 6 LD15 and something with AB30 written on it. I'm planning to sell both and put the money towards the PJ Cub, which will be useful in a teaching environment, allowing two basses to be played at once, and saving valuable space. Cheers, Rob
