1. Update.

I have been having a change around and come up with two gigging rig options.

!. Aguilar AG500
2 Ampeg SVT-VR

Cabs are still Barefaced retro 2x10"s. I feel a yearning for a third one though. (I don't really need one)

Hi Dean. . . .guess I've been steering you the wrong way. I'd have put money on my 210 being sealed. Sorry.

I would checkout the Barefaced 410 though. Not sure it would need any help form a 210.

I would need the 2x10 to be able to use the SVT I am collecting tomorrow. The SVT is either 4ohms or 2ohms. I would have lots more options with the 8ohm 4x10 and a 12ohm 2x10. I have an Aguilar head to use for smaller gigs which is either 4 or 8ohms

3. I am also thinking along the 4x10 route as most of my favorite cabs (before the 8x10 incident) were 4x10 cabs.

The Barefaced 4x10 is looking promising paired up with one of my 2x10 cabs. That way there are a few options of small, medium and large rigs for different venues.

I have used an Ampeg 4x10 HLF cab in the past and I didn't bond with it. It sounded woolly to me.

I`d say so - and def hope so seeing as that`s what I`m getting.

I'm really confused about the impedance of these cabs together though. What impedance is optimal?

2ohm 4x10 with 12ohm 2x10?
8ohm 4x10 with 4ohm 2x10?

how does it work? I always understood that running cabs of different impedance caused the cabs to work unevenly.

There's a berg nv412 for sale in the classifieds here and I can tell you from experience that it will give you that 8x10 punch and more. It's sealed, smaller and lighter than an 8x10 but in every other way it wins hands down.

Just had a look. Shame it's in Hull.

From personal experience : In the right circumstances its the best. In the wrong circumstances its a big big problem.

It may have been the stage you were playing on or just the right environment that allowed the bass to be heard and felt the way you like it. It might have been the case that the same sound, or just as good a sound, might have been got using a good 4 x 10, a pair of 2 x 10 or something of similar power handling to the 8x10.

If its only every now and then you need it you could hire it?

You may well be correct. I would like to do the gig again with my own setup. lol
I couldn't use one for every gig.
It was just so different sounding to my usual setup. So much more punch. Not volume. That low mid punch that you can feel from anywhere you stood. I am trying to work out if it is just a sealed 8x10" cab that can do this so well.

For me, it is simple..if you have the situation where it all fits to together and can laod it, get the FO rig.
The sound is the payback. If you don't or can't handle that, for various reasons and the weight is THE defining factor in a lot of cases, get something you can live with.

I have two rigs and both are mighty pleasant but Rig 1 trumps Rig 2 every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
I'm aware of this and plan accordingly. Bases covered.

I think you have hit the nail on the head sir. Its not everyday I have the luxury to play on a stage suitable for an 8x10". But when I do it would be great to have one available to use.

I would have thought stacking them vertically would be more likely to give you the same feeling as standing in front of an 8 x 10", as (for me) a big part of the appeal is having speakers up near your ears

Before the weekend I would have thought you were correct. I can testify that is def not the case in my experience.

If you like it, have somewhere to store it and can transport it I say get one!! Nothing to lose, there's some good deals second hand and even new online

And there is the problem. Oh, and some of the places I play are smaller than a small thing.

You could always buy a Barefaced Eight10. :) Though I think the Big Twin 2 might be suitable for your needs.
I'm getting something of a 'sealed' sound from my 4ohm Two10 with a 500W amp. I like it.
Actually I did use the 4ohm 2x10" on its own for a while and that was almost there. It was a great setup. I thought two 2x10"s would be better and got another and changed the impedance to 12ohms for both cabs. They don't seem to be working quite as hard now though. Something was lost doing that I'm sure.

IMO you could get there with EQ and compression and/or drive, but I think most people will disagree with me. How are you stacking the 2 x 10"s?
True, compression would do it. I try to keep things simple though. Like me.

I stack the 2x10"s either way depending on how much room we have. I don't notice any real difference in the sound.
