  1. I bought a T-bird off farmer61 (cheers mate - sweet deal) a couple of weeks ago and gigged it for the first time last night - what a great experience!

My Precision has always been my 'go to' bass up till now and there's no doubt that it's smoother and easier to play than the Thunderbird, but there's something about the Gibson - the size, weight and shape - that just makes it easier to move and groove around on stage (despite what you may have heard, it's lighter than the P bass and there's absolutely no neck dive - true for the 2005 model anyway). And, according to experienced ears in the audience, it really drove through the mix - it certainly sounded very full and warm onstage.

I know there's a certain amount of scepticism about Gibson basses around these parts - and I had to swap the bridge for a Hipshot Supertone, because, really, what is that Gibson bridge about? - but as of last night I'm most certainly a convert.

Really looking forward to that - and nice to stumble across another member of the BC/BBC clan :)

  3. I've got the Deluxe P. With D'Addario chromes on it's an absolute joy to play. I know there are some concerns about Fender's QC but I bought this unseen online and it's beautifully made - no issues at all. The preamp's fine and I agree that it's best used for subtle cuts and boosts - I generally use it with the bridge pickup - but for most of the stuff I play I end up using the bass as a passive P. I think there's still one for sale here for £800 - great price for a great bass.

  4. Bought a Gibson Thunderbird from Julian. Second time I've bought something from him this year and once again it was an effortless deal.

Initially contacted him on Sunday evening - friendly and swift replies to my queries - bass was delivered Wednesday afternoon - very well packed and exactly as described.

Really great guy to do business with. Lumme - ain't BassChat wonderful, guv?

  5. Played a gig this evening at a venue in central London. House backline spec looked adequate so I just turned up with my bass and Radial DI.

Strangely, when I got there, the Trace Elliot head and 4x10 cab had morphed into a Line 6 combo about the size of a shoebox (1x8 - oh yes, that should do, thank you). Also, during the soundcheck when I asked for some bass in my monitor it farted appallingly as soon as it reached an audible level.

Needless to say, I spent the two and a half hours between soundcheck and gig feeling somewhat disheartened. However, despite the fact that I couldn't really hear what I was playing for most of the gig, it went very well and apparently sounded fine out front. I was just glad that there weren't any songs I play fretless on in the set - that really would have been a challenge!

You've not seen my band then - fretless bass, slide guitar, lap steel guitar, voices, so digital tuning guarantees nothing.

Sounds great - when's your next gig? (As one Brightonian to another).

I remember reading in a biography of Paul Weller that when the Jam recorded All Mod Cons or maybe Setting Sons, their producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven, I think) said "I wished Paul wouldn't insist on using Rickenbackers. They just won't stay in tune!! We must have wasted 3 whole days just tuning them."

Another problem Vic Coppersmith-Heaven had with Weller was getting him to take the gum out of his gob before vocal takes. That's what he told me anyway...

In case you were wondering, each pair of comments was made by the same guy (none are invented or even exaggerated - I didn't need to).

In case you were wondering, he's a lead guitarist. Who thinks he can sing.

In case you were wondering, we sacked him three weeks ago.

Wow! ALL from the same person? I...er...no, words fail me
