1.
I owned a MarkBass Rig... SA450 410 & 115

loads of volume which is impressive as hell initially, just found the sound really hollow and lacking any weight and presence in a band situation.

I'd say there are better options in the 410 market (IMHO) to partner the excellent head you have.

I guess you've got to ask what's wrong (if anything) with your current amp/cab set up, the MB cab will sound different to your Ashdown, but you may not like it.....

Is it change for the sake of a good deal ? if so..... consider it carefully, there may be better ways to spend your hard earned

Cheers Marcus, what did you go for?

  2. I have he SA450 MB head that I am currently running through my old Ashdown 4x10. Potentially I may be part ex-ing and getting a decent deal on a 4x10 markbass cab. I have read all the threads about mark bass and some of the indifference to the cabs from people who have used other higher end cabs.

My problem is that I dont have time to try some of the more illustrious cabs mentioned here. Even in Birmingham its Trace and Ashdown et al and I am reluctant to buy blind even with all the knowledgeable input here.

Is it worth a punt on the markbass 4x10? Will it make a huge difference from my Ashdown 4x10. I wouldn't get to know until I gig it, even if I do crank it up in the shop.

    Cheers.

  3. I dont understand all this tab nonsense. It's in F. There is a cheeky little A flat in the opening part and then your'e up the scale for the narration/ singing. The bit before the chorus I have seen played in a few different places. I have gone back down the neck to play it on the D and G strings.

Granted ... putting it all together and nailing it takes time, but I don't think finding out the actual notes being played is too hard.

The problem for me is that I have played it in a band for so many years that I have slightly bastardised the original (unintentionally) ;) . Sure, you would know what I am playing, but is it EXACTLY like the original. No. Do I lie awake at night. No.

  4. And did the Ox have some basses! There is a wonderful scene of the Ox leaving his mansion (to go on tour I think) from the 70's. It is very contrived of course, but the spiral staircase and walls of the hallway of his mansion are full of guitars. With the benefits of sky + I watched the scene a few times. Every classic guitar and bass is there from the 50's to when ever the film was shot. From a Gretch country gentleman to a Rik 4001.

note to self. Dr Who's Tardis, shotgun, stockings.

  5. Not always true I know, but generally I think you get what you pay for in this life. I have gradually upgraded over the kast few years abit like I did with cars over the years. Some better gear can kick start the playing but its certainly no replacement fpr talent, practice, hard work and combinations of them. After all this I have found myself returning to my old faithfull and relatively inexpensive Jazz bass after a year of serious GAS. I may treat her to some new knobs.

  6. I have swapped over and dabbled with a few 4 bolt straight swaps. Very straight forward so far. I have a major urge to try my Marcus sig 3 bolt neck on a US standard body. I dont want to drill any holes in the Marcus neck as this could screw up a resale price etc... Seems a more obvious thing to put the holes (or extra hole) in the body neck pocket. Any body done this. Am I making major assumptions or mistakes.

    Cheers.

  7. I have had the SA450 for some time and agree that it gives a natural tone for your bass. The best sounding bass through mt MB id my passive US Jazz. I am now seriously considering a 4x10 upgrade. I have only ever used my MB through my old Ashdown 4x10. I wondering whether the £800 is worth the difference in quality. My only reservation is that just a 2x10 didn't sem enough for me, but that was in the shop. There is no replacement for cranking it up and gigging it especially in a crowded pub with no PA support.

  8. About 12 months ago I was watching a fullerton P. I even considered going up to about a grand. It got pulled before the end and I think Ive seen the same one with a buy it now of about 2 grand. Are they that good?

  9. I picked up a standard US Jazz about 8 years ago. Simply the best bass I had ever played. I bought a Marcus Miller earlier this year and its great. However I just fancied gigging my old bass afew months ago and I haven't put it down since. I swapped the neck last night for a Jap 62RI neck I got from the states before Christmas and this bass is now even better.

I think its the one ;)

Im now wndering what to do with my Marcus. I haven't really got on with the active pups although the neck and playability is fantastic.

  10. Ditto. I am a Beck vigin, which is a surprise really considering my age and musical influences over the years. I thought he was amazing. Ive never seen so much feel in a player. Not overawed by the bass player. All that great gear didn't sound very clever IMO. I came to the conclusion that the dirty old sod must be shagging her. :brow:

  11.
You've seen me.

What more do you want you greedy bastard?
Sorry, you clearly fall into the interbred catergory. Your avant garde bass playing and geography count for nothing. You can take the boy out of West Bromwich but you .............. As our mom used to tell us.

  12. I need to have a good play about with my mongrel P, but I wondered how people use their thumpers? I usually have all pots fully up on a bass. Is this the most effective way to run a thumper? Im after a bit of beefy growl but don't seem to have it yet?

  13.
What's with the elitism?
Pluralism isn't a concept that has taken off 'round these parts. I think you could replace "pluralism" for "interbreeding". Actually there was a bloke from Wales there!

Hopefully get to see some basschatters one day.

  14. No Kelly Grocutt ;) He sent his apologies on Friday night and told us it will happen one day. Great night. 450 drunken black country council house people can't be wrong.

Back to gig reality for 12 months now.

  15. I have not read all the details but from experience there are not many self respecting pubs and venues that dont let you by-pass them. We invested in a couple of industrial strength and length extension reels many moons ago.

    signed anywho....

  16. I had a rattle on my US jazz. Only noticeable when unplugged. I discovered that some thing on or in the tunning machine was rattling. I played the E open and held the peg with my left hand to damp the vibration. No rattle. Doesnot effect tuning or sound when amplified. Just a bit annoying when having an unplugged mess about.

    Strange!

  17.
No need for coat getting Beeds...it would be wise to take any exchange betwixt myself and Mr. Fudge with a pinch, nay a fistful of salt.

We are both from West Bromwich for a start, although only one of us has a gay brother.

Since Mr. Fudge has become a bass player (and a damned fine one too...even though he refuses to accept the influence I had on him) he has delighted in asking me about my gear preferences and then buying the stuff I can't afford. I am pretty sure he does this on purpose knowing the devastating affect it has on me.

I do however love the man entirely. In the same way one would love for instance, a castle.

Im treating you to a years subscription to English Heritage. Hows your brother by the way?

  18.
The bass player form The Move or ELO?................ :)
Cogratulations!!!

You have won a banana. Hopefully we will finish our set with Sweet talkin' woman, Dont bring me down and Mr Blue Sky with Kelly Groucut from ELO on bass and vocals.

I'll know at 6.30 on Saturday if its happening.

  19.
Is it me?
Yes it is. We felt six years of carnage was not enough for you and would like to do it one more time. We will have an operative waiting stage right with your bag of flour.

Jimmy Lea is a bit warmer in a regional way, and also the 70's would have been the heyday for our potential mystery guest.

I am now offering a first prize of a banana for the first correct answer.
