I will say this, Glasgow city centre isn't as bad as people assume (infact, I fairly enjoy going there), but venture out into some of the other places like Maryhill and some stereotypes will come into effect.
-
Generally when I'm in Glasgow my main objective is to get out of Glasgow. Saying that, there are a few nice pubs, Maggie Mays being the main one that springs to mind. There is also places like TGI Fridays etc.
-
Breaking and slowing it down generally works for me. Although saying that, I've been trying to 'sweep pick' for about 7 months now and still can't do it. I'd never use it, I just like the idea of being able to do it and shut up any over-confident guitarists I may play with in the future.

Rotosound strings are the only ones I've tried that I actually really disliked. I love the sound of brand new, fresh and clanky strings. The rotosounds I bought (I think it was the swing strings? Orange box) lost the nice new sound within 10 hours of playing. Probably the only brand of strings I wouldn't buy.

I really don't care what a band wears when going on stage really. The only gig I've ever been to where I was there to see a show as well as listen to the music was Rammstein. I think too many bands go for image over music which is something I really really detest the idea of.

Paul Gray; when I was a kid I had no interest no music at all, let alone playing an instrument. It wasn't until a school mate lent me the self-titled Slipknot album that I fell in love with the low end. I credit me playing bass to Paul Gray entirely and was devastated when he died.
Jeordie White/Twiggy; Around the same time as I heard Slipknot for the first time, I also heard Marilyn Manson. Still to this day, my style of playing and my early use of root/octave and sliding techniques are plucked from Twiggy, as well as my love for Thunderbirds.

There's something about Twiggy I've always loved as well. I feel like he knows exactly what to play and when, especially on Thirteenth Step by A Perfect Circle. Really under-rated musician in my opinion. -
Basically exactly what Truckstop said. Martinie has been my main inspiration when it comes to playing ever since I started and after a few months of not listening to them, I went back and realized just how much of an inspiration he's been on me. Superb bassist.

Arif Mirabdolbaghi (Protest the Hero)
Les Claypool (Primus + various other bands)
Ryan Martinie (Mudvayne)
Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle)
Justin Chancellor (Tool) -
When actually thinking about it, I've only saw two of my 'bass heroes'
Les Claypool (both dates at Royal Albert Hall this year and Manchester Last year)
Arif Mirabdolbaghi. Yes. I googled his second name. -
Although not quite to the same level of issues as you've endured. November 2010 My lung collapsed (twice) and I spent the full month in hospital unable to move for the most part. It made me appreciate my family a lot more and I'll be honest, ever since then I've been more willing to try new things and generally been a happier person.

i'd rather not do the freebie, i can't justify loosing the cash and the fact that everyone is getting paid pisses me off
Yeah, same here. I've never played a free gig (I'm finding it impossible to find a group of reliable people to even get a band together) but I probably would. Even if it was just for promo or experience...or free drinks. -

how can you afford to play for free? playing for free means it costs you....
I can't, but I would at least enjoy playing rather than sulking in the house alone wishing I was playing a gig. -
I'd rather play for free than not play. I took up music because I enjoy it not to make money.
I would much rather play for money obviously. -
I used to have Ultimate Ears Triple Fi.10's (until I sat on them by accident). They were great, but I only really used them for listening to music and playing in the house. But they were definetly worth the money I paid and theyve went down a fair bit in price since I bought them.

I do enjoy a bit of Enya...

Other than just songs I've fancied covering I'd have to say this

It's just really unusual patterns for me and tuning. No bass track yet though, still in the process of learning it -

IMO the B string is something to be used sparingly - use it too much and you just end up with a muddy mess.

I like this thread.
It also just dawned on me that I've been playing for exactly two years now (give or take a day or two). I love it more than I did when I started now.
What to do in Glasgow during the day this thursday
