1. My daugter (and I) have been more than happy with the Harly Benton PB-Shorty, at about 55quid you cant go wrong.
2. Received one of those 45squid Thomann bass on Friday (10yo daughters Christmas pressie). Well for 45 quid you really cant go wrong! OK, a couple of "finish" niggles here and there and the back of the neck is bare wood, which I dont like. The nut looks a bit of a mess and is the worst bit, but still the action is very good, and it was in tune out of the box. Only played for a minute or so, quickly before hiding it (in a old flight case of mine), so not plugged it in. I thought I heard that the intonation might be a bit out, so will try and sort that out before Santa delivers it. But it is definately well playable, and I thought that the dimentions of the neck and body suited the size very well and it is nice and light. At 45 quid an absolute bargin as far as I am concerned (fits a guitar gig bag nicely - £7 from Thomann) and there was a lead in the bass box as well. I wouldnt want it to be my only bass, but for a child it is perfect and more than adequate for the situation.
3. Kees, There is one on ebay at the moment! Always been my dream bass too, but far too rich for me. Regards Grossey
4. My first bass was a Westone Spectrum DX, back in '86. I traded up for a Fender Jazz in about 93/94. Wish I had kept it (don't we all say that now), bought it with "Christmas money" a day or so before by bithday, should have waited as I recall got more bithday money that I predicted, so wouldn't have had to trade it in. I particulaly miss the matt/satin neck, which worked well for my sweaty teenage hands! I also recall the pickup being a particulaly comfortable thumbrest (moreso than the "sharp" jazz edge or the annoying screw on a P pickup). That said, I got rid of it bacause I thought it looked a bit "80's metal". Whilst I would buy one again (in black) for old times sake, if I were to buy a Westone without any sentimentality, I would now go for a Thunder 1A. However, if you are on a tight budget, I bet the Spectrums go for less than the Thunders, so you might get a mega-bargain.
5. Thats indeed a cunning plan, but for the moment we are talking about at least 3 different prisions (anyway, we may not be asked to return!!). But maybe we will "click" with one particular group and get the chance to make it regular. Then that idea turns into ideal.
6. I may be getting involved in playing some worship in prisions in the new year. However, have been told that amps are a no-no as they are too much hassle to search. Therefore with these limited options, I will look to get an acoustic bass and try not to be too frustrated by the lack of volume. Setup will probably be, bass, guitar, cajon/djembe, and prision supplied keyboard. Anyway, are there any recomendations for a good (fretted) acoustic bass? My budget is £200 so immediate thought is the Dean Playmate. Would also consider used, prefering to stick to "known" names (ie Fender, Ibanez, Epiphone, Washburn, Crafter, Tanglewood, Takamine, etc). Can anyone recommend the best of the (budget) bunch for volume and playability? Hopefully in black to satisfy my "Johnny Cash in San Quentin" urges! ;-) Thanks
7.
We do still build Original series basses and even C Basses, to order from time to time (we get both of Craig's back for service every now and again).. Two have gone over to the US recently - both to LA; one was an almost exact copy of the original C bass built for John Entwistle (now owned by Peter Hook), built for a bass playing West Coast music photographer called Elde Stewart and the other a fretless went to studio musician Peter Freeman (whos credits include Alanis Morissette and Nile Rodgers among others).. We are talking about introducing a 'Tanglewater' version - but probably not until at least next year.. But give me a call, if you're interested in one... Chris
Thanks Chris, I will definately be getting a Tanglewater one when available, (only if in black of course!).
8. Hi Chris, Do you have any plans or even thoughts regarding an "Original" (aka "C" bass) shaped model, a la Craig Adams? Always been my dream bass. Cheers
9. Definately liked what I saw at the show. Played the "Classic J" and for under £400, was blown away. In case this thread is read by anyone from Overwater, can I please reiterate my request for a "Original" shape (a la Craig Adams from the Mission) to be added to this range? As the missus knows that has always been my dream bass, I already have the "green light"!
10. Thanks guys for all your comments, it sure makes me think about things. I nearly always pay "full" price for things, but am concerned that it makes me the mug! Everyone else seems to get the great deals, I am the guy who buys the day before the sale! If I were to get a free case with the bass I am looking at I would be very happy (and willing to pay full price)! But as it is an Epiphone Jack Casady, cases are £90! And there doesn't seem to to one case in the country either!
11. Hi, OK, in the current economic climate, what do you guys think is a resonable amount to expect a shop to discount a Bass? ie. asking Mr Shopkeeper, "what is your best price for cash"? Lets assume, Bass is new, £500, about the same as his competetors "ticket" price, in a independant but large (exclusively) guitar/bass shop? What are your opinions?
12. That one is my dream bass, (thanks to Craig Adams from the Sisters of Mercy/Mission/Cult/the Alarm). But can anyone tell me what this model was actually called? Reissue would be great (must be in black tho), 11th months to my 40th......I wonder???? Cheers
13. I don't know how much but please be aware that there are two shops in that area of Surrey. Candlers in Kew and Charlie Chandlers Guitar Experience in Hampton Wick. Both have a Plek machine (I believe the only two in the UK). The two shops are unrelated (in a business sense) but are by family blood I understand. Anyway CCGX as they are commonly known as have a high opinion of the Plek system. Both have websites, google Chandlers Guitars and CCGX respectively and you should find them.
14. I don't know anyone who have had it done, but the place to go in the UK is Charlie Chandlers Guitar Experience in Hampton Wick (walking distance from Kinngston). As I said I don't know any who has had this operation done, but I can highly recommend them based on work he has done on friends guitars.
15. The million dollar question is "how much"?
