    they sound bored to death.

Mick sounds like a white boy trying too hard to sound black. How did he get away with it for all these years.

In the end, the Stones are a cover band, copying others, even when they write their own songs lol

The only time they were great was with Mick Taylor.

As Sonny boy Williamson said about Clapton and the Yardbirds: “these British want to play the blues so bad,” Williamson once remarked, “and they play the blues so bad!”

You definitely need some way of playing along with songs / tracks to make sense of what you're doing.
I use a small mixer for both recorded stuff and my bass, and then into headphones.
Lines which sound dull and uninspiring come alive when put into context.

I use a vox amplug, http://www.voxamps.com/amplug2 Headphones and an ipad
Spotify and youtube for tunes. I sometimes download Guitar pro or power tabs on my mac from ultimateguitar.com using Tuxguitar app to learn bass parts from tabs for stuff I can't get my ears around or need a quick fix for a dep job This is is all free. Which is nice.

  3. Keep it nice and clean, well set up and try to be careful, but not precious about scrathes, small dings and wear and tear in the line of duty.
Was a bit miffed when the drummer walked into and knocked my us jazz off its stand at a rehearsal once though but nothing broken fortunately.

What do they sound like? Toying with getting and putting it in my Yamaha Attitude Special...

    Thumping!
I don't know your bass but based on my bitsa p (sx body, mighty mite neck cts wiring):
I think they're a really good solid p bass sound on mine with the tone knob low and quite a lot brighter with it up
It's hard to describe but always works well in a live band mix.
The old wizard blurb described them as sounding "darker" than a classic p. Which really makes sense if you hear them.
I've also described them as having a bit of an active sound range although they're passive.

  5. One oft all time favourite band. I've been a fan from White Noise, and seeing them on TV doing Statue of Liberty, which we used to cover in one of my first school bands, probably very badly, to Apple Venus. I still have my vinyl copy of Go2 complete with Moulding's Street Plan of Swindon.

  6. In the '80s I was shooting stills on a pop video for Madness early in the morning in the middle of Camden High St.
They Were all dressed as tramps and there were lots of bystanders watching.
A little bloke sidled up to me and asked if would be taking his picture. Being tired and grumpy,it was a very early start "I said no probably not". Well f*** you he replied and walked off. It was Lee sax player and main man with the band. Luckily i apologised in the cafe later and he laughed and saw the funny side. Turned into a great two day shoot, great fun and lovely guys to a man.

I use a merchant on eBay by the name of bassspecialties. I get DR Sunbeams delivered to my door for £20. Can't beat that anywhere.

I want to try Elixirs next but they're still a bit pricey. TI flats are just ridiculously dear - you can buy a decent pedal for the price of those strings. I don't care how good they are - that's plain extortion.

That sounds good for DRs . Im keen to try them. Do you not get hit for duty or tax?

the sticks/brushes/hot rods thing - I can make hotrods easily as loud as sticks, and I can make sticks as quiet as brushes. It's not the easiest thing to learn but surely most gigging drummers can play quietly?

Ive heard a drummer describe this as playing to the room , which sounds like an eminently sensible approach to me. I wish more would adopt this. I try to on bass

Lucky number - Lena Lovitch. Not my favourite, but love the quirkiness of it. Some great suggestions on this thread

Python Lee Jackson - wasn't that Rod Stewart in an earlier guise ?

Lene Lovitch's album with this on is very good. Great version of The Four Seasons song The night on it.
