  1. Just back from a monthly pub residency with the acoustic duo. Was just one of those gigs

where I never got settled for some reason. Don’t know if I’m getting old but audiences in

some pubs which were previously okay now seem to be getting more ‘lairy’, for want of

a better word. Tuesday evening and they were battered by 9.30pm, loud and annoying

some of our regulars so much that quite a few of them left early. Hard when you’re

playing acoustic stuff to compete with them, and hard to hear any definition

from the PA so I struggled sound wise too. Just glad to get home TBH, but at least

we got paid so not all bad.
Next one is at The Sun Inn in Beverley on Easter Sunday, one of our favourite venues

so hopefully should be better than tonight.

A friend of my wife was friendly with Les Gray back in the day. I know the current guitarist/vocalist and the keyboard player of Mud2.

We supported Les Gray’s Mud in the late 80’s. Les was a lovely bloke, very funny and put on a

good show despite not looking in the best of health.

  3. I’d say probably yes - equivalent to just under £120 here. I haven’t tried the Rumble 40, but if

it’s anything like my Rumble 100 then it will be fine. The 100 is a great sounding amp, and I’ve

used it for many small gigs with no problems. If you could run to a s/h one of these it would

be more future proof than the 40 - over here they go from around £150 to £200 second hand

(around 190 to 250 dollars). Good luck!

Bit hard on poor Jools! You have to admit though he has a fantastic band, they are all ace musicians. Seen them live loads of times and it’s always entertaining.

We’re going to see Jools and his band soon - saw them years ago but it was the presence of Imelda May

as one of the guest vocalists ( along with the magnificent Ruby Turner) that swayed me this time.

  5. Another of our semi-regular acoustic duo gigs at The Lookout in Scarborough this evening.

Took two basses with me ( Taylor and Ibanez) to compare, but somehow managed to leave

my holdall behind which has all my leads, stand and mic in it! Disaster averted though by my

guitarist pal having spares, and the venue having a euro lead for my Rumble combo.

Anyway, a full house of diners and shed loads of requests. Along with the usual kind of

stuff you’d expect a duo like us to play, we also did some we hadn’t done before / for

a long time - such as ‘Sir Duke’, ‘Mr Bojangles’ ( which I really don’t like) and ‘Little red rooster’

with my mate using a half pint glass as a slide for his guitar. Ended with ‘Come up and see me’

    in tribute to Steve Harley.
We return there in three weeks time, when I’ll make sure I have a full compliment of kit with me.

  6. Back in the mid 90's I used to play a Friday lunchtime gig with some friends in a cafe bar in Hull.

It was always a great time, especially if some or all of the guys playing didn't have an evening gig afterwards!

One of the band knew Albert Lee, so when he was in town he persuaded him to sit in with us. Needless to

say he was wonderful, and yes we did play 'Country Boy' with him too. Over the years I've been to many gigs

where Albert was playing, including Eric Clapton, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings

and of course with his own band Hogan's Heroes, so I was a bit starstruck. He's a lovely guy, and now 80 years

old and currently touring the UK!

(Tahnia was the name of the ladieswear shop next to the cafe bar, not the band!)

That’s a bummer. It’s handy having those provided as backline. I tend to bring a spare head in the car in case of stuff like that.

My gear was already there so no problem. The gigs we do rarely involve using house backline, so

I was disappointed not to try theirs. Apparently their usual SVT head was away for repair, and

this one was on loan! Haven’t used an SVT for a long time, but have happy memories of owning

one in the 90’s - still my favourite set up ever.

Is that the Butlins rig @casapete? I used it a couple of weekends ago. Sounded ace.

It is, the Minehead Butlins. Sounded sweet as anything at soundcheck, but then the green light

was showing red intermittently when I wasn’t playing anything, and then started to distort.

I lost my faith in it so used my GK stuff ( which I’ve just posted in the for sale section on here!).

  9. NOW SOLD!

Gallien Krueger Neo 4x10 speaker cabinet for sale - was part of a rig but amp head now sold.

    Spec for the cabinet -

    Lightweight design

    800 watt power rating

    8 Ohm

4x10” Cast frame Neodymium Paragon speakers

    Bi-ampable horn

    Speakon and ¼” jack inputs

    Poplar ply cabinet

Black Tolex finish with interlocking corners

    Dimensions – 18.5 x 23.5 x 26.5”

    Weight – 64lbs

I've used this cabinet with a tribute band, playing mainly theatres. It's been very well looked after, never

thrashed at all and is in truly superb condition. It has been flightcased from new, and the flightcase is

included in the sale. I also have the original unused GK castors that came with the cab, along with the

original GK speakon to speakon lead, again unused.

I'm in East Yorkshire and cash on collection is preferable. However my last few gigs in April take me to the

following places - Redditch, Shrewsbury, Ipswich and Birmingham. I'll be using the cabinet at

all of these places (all central theatres) where you can pick it up anytime between say 4pm and 7pm or

after my gig ends around 10pm.  ( Obviously if there's interest then I'll bring my Fender Rumble combo to see me through

    the gig!)

I'm also happy to deliver for the cost of my diesel, or meet up somewhere so long as it's not the other end of the country

    - think Yorkshire / Lincolnshire etc.

    Thanks for reading, cheers.

Yes, although there were usually quite a few electric guitars among the brass instruments.

Ray was a bit of a 'character', rather seedy older guy with a flair for being economical with the truth. Nearly every guitar or bass in the shop had once belonged to Paul Kossof or Jack Bruce or someone similar! Even at thirteen, none of us believed him. He had a habit of over-pricing his better stock, so it never he sold it. I remember that he had an old red semi-acoustic Gibson bass hanging on the wall for years - I considered putting in an offer for it when the shop eventually closed down. I wish that I had done, probably worth a bit now!

And that’s the guy! To be fair, the Marshall was probably around the right price at the time and he didn’t try to

give me any bullsh*t about famous previous owners. I remember thinking that it was a 50 watt combo though,

(maybe it was marked up a such?) and it wasn’t until I took it in for a service a few months later that I discovered

it was an 18 watt job. My eighteen year old self didn’t care though, as it was loud enough to use in my first few

bands and sounded so good, whatever dodgy guitars I played through it.

I have always put my bass combo on the ground for a 'True Bass sound', but am now considering using a stand just to raise so i can hear better ( i am aware of monitoring), my question is do they detract the sound with the amp being off the ground?

    Thanks

I’m no expert, but from my experience it largely depends on the floor and the room.

Hollow stages can be problematic causing random boominess, where a stand may

help alleviate this. Also acoustic pads like the Auralex Gramma can help isolate

    any booming.

Personally I’ve always preferred the cab on the floor, although the recent trend for

stacking slim cabs vertically does seem like a good plan. Having the speakers

nearer ear height can’t be a bad thing.

I am guessing that you would have bought it from Ray Allen Music in Shipley, where I got my first bass about a year earlier. As a teenager, I used to live just up the road...

That’s the shop! Just opposite a railway bridge. Mainly brass instruments in the window, and just a few

guitars and amps at the back. I saw the Marshall and he wanted £45 for it. Back then cheque guarantee

cards were only good for £25, so I had to write him two, one for £25 and one for £20. Turned out to

be the best purchase I ever made.

A mate of mine had one of those. 2x12 and just volume and tone controls. He played a Grimshaw Les Paul through it, and I have never heard a better guitar sound.

Mine was the 1x12 , and (like your mate’s) I’ve never played through anything finer.
Being short of funds for renovating my cottage ( and also a lousy guitar player) meant

it was time to sadly let it go.

  14. The function band I was in many years ago played a lot of weddings. Over the years we’d met a lot

of famous people who were guests, although my guitarist pal in the band was most wowed when

he found out that Gary Moore was attending a local wedding in the early 90’s. It was in a marquee

in a posh suburb, a flash do with plenty of guests and a free bar etc.
Tension was high on the day as Gary Moore was my pal’s guitar hero, and he was understandably

nervous about playing in front of him. Subsequently he had quite a few drinks to take the edge

off a bit. Someone suggested Gary could guest with the band, and with that he went to his car and

brought out a Fender combo which was set up on the stage. My pal was so excited by this time,

and had a few more drinks for a bit of dutch courage.

The gig went great, Gary Moore was a top bloke, very friendly and unassuming. My pal ( who is

a wonderful player himself) traded solos with Gary, although by this time he was a touch unsteady

and stood on Gary’s pedals a few times by mistake! Gary didn’t seem too bothered by this, and my pal

    was very apologetic.

Anyway, the audience loved it and my pal was in seventh heaven afterwards. It was only when

he’d been driven home after the gig that he realised he had played with his hero all evening whilst

    wearing odd shoes.

  15. A couple of years ago I decided to part with my beloved late 60’s Marshall 1974 18 watt combo.

I bought it for £45 in Shipley West Yorkshire around 1976, and it was my first ‘proper’ guitar amp.

A vintage dealer made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, and what with Covid and stuff making my

finances a bit tight, I just thought it was time. It got shipped to Australia and then on to Hawaii

to it’s new owner, Kirk Hammet.

( I was promised a video of him playing the ‘Greeny’ Les Paul into it, but never chased it up -

maybe I should drop Kirk a reminder. )

  16. I've had this great Jazz nearly 4 years now, and I originally bought it from @discreet on here. I've posted

a link to the original listing below, ( hope that's okay Mark!) - think it describes it better than I could so please

have a good look through it.

This is a belting bass, not 'just for the price' either! Plays and sounds great, and the light weight really is a

bonus for those who tire easily of 9/10lb basses. I've used it just occasionally since owning it, mainly when

depping with my mate's dad rock band when it's performed brilliantly. I'm only selling it as am semi-retiring

from my band next month, and subsequently will be selling this and a few other basses / amps etc.

I'm in East Yorkshire and cash on collection is preferable. However my last few gigs in April take me to the

following places - Milton Keynes, Redditch, Shrewsbury, Ipswich and Birmingham. I can bring the Jazz to

any of these places (all central theatres) where you can pick it up anytime between say 4pm and 7pm or

after my gig ends around 10pm.

I'm also happy to meet up somewhere so long as it's not the other end of the country - think Yorkshire / Lincolnshire etc.

Postage is my last resort but obviously will offer this to ensure a sale. ( Would probably need to factor in the price of a

used case though to ensure it's safe delivery.)

    Thanks for looking, cheers.

    Pete.

PS - Please note this is NOT a Fender bass, but a great instrument put together in that style.
