does the vintera have the chunky neck of the JMJ

    I have a JMJ, it's fabulous

According to the Fender site they both have a C shape neck profile. I have both and just did an A/B, I'd say they are the same profile but the JMJ is fractions of a millimetre deeper at the edges, so slightly rounder.

I’ve always loved the looks of the classic Fender basses. Precision, Jazz, Telecaster, Jaguar.

However I hated the Mustang. To me It always looked like a fugly toy bass.
My son has recently shown an interest in playing bass and finds them a bit big for his build. I have started looking at short scale basses and am constantly drawn to the Mustang. For some bizarre reason they suddenly look great. Nothing has changed except my perception! I don’t want a PJ but the JMJ is out of my budget. Has anyone tried the Squire Classic Vibe and is it any good? Alternatively is there a MIJ or MIM model that may be around on the used market that has the Mustang pickup configuration? Thanks.

Firstly, congratulations on seeing the light 😉 I've never played a Squier Mustang but I imagine like most cheap basses a decent setup will work wonders. A cheaper alternative would be the Squire affinity bronco, they're only about £150 brand new, or there are a bunch of cheap short scale basses out there from Ibanez, Gretsch, Jackson and G&L.

Secondhand MIJ Mustangs are going for crazy money these days, around £1200 😱

  2. I once played with a singer who asked us to slow the song down, which is fair enough. They then said it was too slow, and asked us to bump up the tempo a little bit... a little bit more... a little more... and we were back to the original tempo.

They later asked the keyboard player to "come in earlier". He was a little miffed as he was playing what was on the recording but did as they asked. They then told him he still wasn't playing it right, so they had a quiet, in depth conversation, after which everything was fine (I didn't notice a difference). Later he explained that what they had meant by "come in earlier" was actually "use a different piano sound".

Bought a black one too last week from guitarguitar, awesome bass! There should be a black pickguard in the gig bag if you fancy changing it 👍🏻

I already have the blue one and a red Vintera, but I want this one now too 😂😂😪 they're such fantastic basses. I put labellas on mine an some foam under the bridge... tone for days!

  4. I put together a small board for gigs that don't require lots of mad sounds (most of them 😪). I'm not sure what the 4th pedal will be. I considered a tuner (I normally use a clip-on), but I think this might be a roving line-up anyway, depending on the gig. And any excuse to break out the Octabvre Mk3.

My favourite thing about this board is the power supply: a Gigrig Isolator and a True Tone Onespot. I can't believe how simple and effective it is.

  5. My list is made up of people whose lines I have spent the most time intentionally learning (I've ignored the ones I learned by accident through weddings, work etc), or whose ideas on musicality made an impact on me.

    Flea

    Mike Dirnt

    Mark Hoppus

    Janek Gwizdala

    Victor Wooten

    Damian Erskine

    Pino Palladino

    Sting

    Michael League

    James Jamerson

    Bob Babbit

    Willy Weeks

    Owen Biddle

    Justin Chancellor

    Jaco Pastorius

    Paul Jackson

    Bernard Edwards

    Louis Johnson

    George Porter Jr.

     Ok, that's a lot more than I thought 😂 I'll stop there.

@bassist_lewis, where are these clips then?😆

Not even a little bit 😂😢 I'm a secondary teacher and, as you can probably imagine, things are quite full on for us just now. I make no promises, but if I do make any demos, I'll post here first!

  7. As much as I love big boards with lots of options and crazy sounds, I have a huge respect for the tiny minimalist boards with 3 or 4 pedals (Noble Amps insta feed is pretty good for those). My first board was a Nano with three pedals (Agent 00Funk, Grizzly Bass and 3 Leaf Octabvre).

I'm playing with the idea of making a small board, I'm thinking either a pedal train Nano or Nano+. I'd definitely have an overdrive and an octave, considering some kind of preamp (Noble Preamp if money was no object... but it is!), or a switcher pedal.

What would you put on a small board?

  8. Got a few pedals for sale that won't be getting the love the deserve. All have velcro on the bottom. Trades considered, particularly for filters, fuzzes and octaves. Or if you have any 3 Leaf Audio pedals I might give you all three!

    Prices do not include postage.

Creation Audio Labs Grizzly Bass: £150 SOLD

A very versatile pedal, and looks great with all the LEDs lit up. A combined overdrive and distortion, with mid and high cut controls. Does a very good impression of a cranked valve amp. Original box not included.

Latent Lemon Audio Brassmaster: £120 SOLD

This is a clone of the legendary Maestro Brassmaster, and it sounds great but I can't justify having this and the Malekko B:Assmaster. Up there with my favourite fuzzes. Comes with badge and circuit diagram (no original box).

    SolidGoldFX Beta Mk2: £100 SOLD

This is a great little pedal. It can be a tube-y overdrive or a B15-esque preamp. Comes with original box, bag and instructions.

I know 2 band leaders who won't let anyone else touch their leads. One told me that if I coiled up his leads he'd uncoil them and do it again!!  I know how he feels.

A singer friend of mine has been banned from coiling cables because he does that thing where you wrap it round your arm really quick 🤣

The Diabolik is basically a smaller version of this with fewer controls. Best synths/gated fuzz I’ve tried, would love to try a B:Assmaster too!

If you have the spare cash it's totally worth it in my opinion. There's also the Latent Lemon Audio Brassmaster, which is a clone of the Maestro pedal of the same name, and about £100 cheaper. I have one, which I could now be persuaded to move on...

It’s a great pedal and as you allude to there are a  range of sounds from very interesting to mouth agape as you tweak away. I ended up moving mine on, but only because it takes up a fair bit of board real estate and was only an ‘occasionally on’ pedal in the context of my band. So much fun to be had with it though. And yes, the touch with the teeth is v. cool. Enjoy!

I messed around with it for a good hour last night. It sounds AMZING with the Moog, proper 70s Stevie Wonder synth tones 😍 However, I also don't know how often I'll use it... luckily I have an originals band where I write most of the material 😀

  12. This arrived on my doorstep this afternoon. I've admired Malekko for a long time, especially this pedal. I've only had a short blast on it, but it sounds predictably brilliant. The knobs and switches interact with each other in very interesting ways, and of course it looks great. It also came with plastic teeth inside... apparently a feature of the original Brassmaster.

Lovely this - big JB fan. Singer has done a great job (nice voice) - with someone like Jeff Buckley and his vocal acrobatics, it’s easy to do a mimic/parody; he’s done his own thing and that’s mint.

Good band you’ve got mate, pretty jealous TBF.

    Made my morning 😉

Thanks! Angus (singer) is an absolute beast, one of the best singers I've ever worked with.
