  1. For a bit of long term feedback on the 32 bit float recording

I've been using a Tsacam Portacapture x8 for nearly a year now after my Zoom H6 fell of a mic stand.

The Portacapture is basically the same as the H6 except rather than the minimal approach of the new "essential" it goes the opposite way with a big touch screen interference.

Whilst I love the interface (although you pay a premium for it). It is the ease of the 32 bit float recording that I love. It's just so easy.

I was using it on Saturday evening (as ambient mic for in ears but also to record) and half way through the gig realised the monitor feed I had as an extra input was coming in red hot and blasting the input. Listen back afterwards and no issues. Just throw it into he DAW and hit "normalise" on the audio track and it's as if you set the most perfect gain.... love it. And from my experience with products from Zoom, I'm sure they'll be great, although really very ugly?

  2. I just had the last night of the shows and the fretless went down a treat, it really make the difference for those pieces.

All thanks to the amazing @Roger2611 for being the amazing person to actually let me borrow their bass!

Top man, had great chats when I picked it up and I'll be in touch to drop it off again.

When I made the initial request I wasn't sure it was possible...but hats off to the BassChat community and of course @Roger2611

  3. Seems like a simple thing but I can't find the answer anywhere online.

I have a patch on my GT-1000 Core which has 3 controls.

    1. Engage Octave

    2. Engage Chorus

    3. Change input (switches between input 1 (fretless bass) and input 2 (fretted bass)

The issue I have is that my 'engage oct' is not a straight forward FX it's a 'Div' => 'Oct' => 'eq' => 'mix' so that both the FX and eq get engageded at the same time meaning the display says "DIV2 CH. SEL" instead of "FX1 OCT" as you might expect.

So as you can see from the photo, I have to remember that:

    DIV2 CH. SEL = "Octave"

DIV1 CH. SEL = "Toggle inputs"

Surely there is a way for me to rename the display to some alternative text rather than remembering what every 'Div' is controlling for every patch? Anyone know how?

  4. You don't see these super often so I just wanted to vouch for this instrument.

I picked one of these up a couple of years ago (for more than you are asking!). I regularly gig it with jazz quartet and Big Band and often get complimented in its tone (especially if you can stretch to add a nice preamp designed for acoustic piezo pickup instruments)

Superb instruments and this one is at a great price

Do you know Nick Smith? He plays with a Genesis tribute show and teaches/does gear set-ups in the Peterborough area. He may be able to assist as he has nearly as many, if not more, basses as me....

I know of Nick but I don't know him to ask for a bass. As is common, bassists don't know bassisits, since there's only ever one per band so we just don't meet, so I might see if any of my mutual musical acquaintances know him or other bassists in the area well enough for that sort of request.

Sorry to be of no use whatsoever, but you're welcome to use one of mine, hand on heart. Unfortunately I live in Japan but if you want to collect, tea/ adult beverages will be supplied. If you'd be kind enough to bring a few rolls of choc Hobnobs I'd be most grateful...

If you were in London...I literally have a fretless sitting in the very same corner you describe.

    Sorry, not much help...

If I fly to Japan via London I could have the pick of them! It'll only cost me a few airline tickets and some hobnobs!! Sounds sensible to me 🤣

  7. I'm playing bass in a local Amdram production at the end of January and a handful of the peices 'require' a fretless (I've played fretless plenty in the past and also play cello & double bass so no learning curve) however I don't actually own a fretless bass at the moment.

So wondering if anyone (preferebly local to South Lincolnshire/Peterborough) would be willing to lend me their fretless bass that's been sat in the corner of their room for the last few years.

It's amdram, so not much money involved but would be happy to throw a bit of cash in as a gesture of good will.

Could also potentially leave my spare bass with you as 'deposit' to guarntee the return of the fretless.

Crazy idea, but you don't get if you don't ask.

(alternatively I could buy a bass on marketplace and then put it straight up for sale - but who has the cash to do that?)

When my Shure 425s broke about 6 months ago I went on my own 'exploration' of cheap IEM. Here are my 'reviews' from using as IEM (not recreational music listening).

KZ ZS10 Pro X: (4BA+1DD) (£30 Aliexpress) A big improvement over my 425s but an 'intolerable to my ears' harshness at 8kHz. My wife loves them for vocals but I can't use them for long periods

TINHIFI T3 Pro: (1DD) (£52 Aliexpress) Better and flatter than the ZS10 and the Shures but not quite the clarity of sound stage from the multi driver units.

KZ AS16 Pro: (8BA) (£40 Aliexpress) These are my go to, all the clarity of the ZS10 but without the 'V shape' or '8kHz harsh' (only down side is they are big) - the fact that 'https://crinacle.com/rankings/iems/' gives these the same 'V-shape harshness' description as ZS10, is frankly bonkers (unless the 'Pro' really makes that much difference?) They are drastically different and are way flatter

    My conclusion
KZ AS16 Pro are my go to and my recommendation, the only down side is thate are big and bulky and less comfy than Shures or T3 Pro. I love these and they have changed the way I do on stage monitoring

TINHIFI T3 Pro are my permanant backup in my gig bag and I occasionally put them in if I know have a long day of IEM since they are just so comfy

KZ ZS10 Pro: Personally I would pay the extra for something with less harshness (although I'm more sensitive to that than some since my wife loves these for singing)

I'm really happy with the AS16 and now have no 'itch' for custom moulds, even though I know they may well be better I can't justify the enormous increase in cost over the £40 ones that I now love

Hey I'm just about to get away from my trusty old Shure 215, so thinking of these... what would you suggest.

    KZ ZS10 PRO X

    KZ AS16 Pro

    KZ AS10

    There's my thoughts - not tried AS10

    That's great! thanks.

One final question which way around does the cable go? the plugs on the cable are flush on one side and slightly indented on the other. Which side faces outwards? I tried to take a photo to show this but with the mouldings being transparent it isn't even remotely obvious. If necessary I'll post a diagram later today.

Which ever way round makes a 'pan test' work. (and has the cable going up over your ear)

My only worry with that would be that part of my reason to go back to IEM's is being tucked in the corner at times the other side of the kit to the guitars so it might be drum heavy but it will be experiment and I suppose if I all have an aux feed from the stage box that I can control from the iPad it may not be an issue

Forgot mentioned, the Tascam X8 (same functionality as Zoom X6 but big touch screen interface). Has an optional Bluetooth adapter meaning you could set it up above a drum kit (or even opposite side of the stage) and it's fully controllable from your phone. Everything from gain levels to mix levels and beyond. It's about £100 more than the zoom H6 but if you really want that functionality?

  12. I use a tascam x8 (Same as Zoom H6), and have never had a need to mount it up above the drums. I have it mounted on a mic stand next to may cab so I can easily control levels without it being in the way.

I purposely have it above the cab to get as litte bass cab as possible and send a DI bass signal to it for more control.

If I need more drums than guitar, I point it more towards the drums, if I want less drums, I rotate it away from the drums.

Simple and accessible, doesn't get in the way of the stage and if there is a nice aux signal then I plug that in too and reduce the ambient mic. (I'm often playing with un-mic'ed horn section so that's pretty rare)

  13. So last week one of my Shure SE425 ears stopped working mid practice (replacement cable didn’t fix – actual driver/ear is broken). I ordered and received a pair of ‘KZ ZS10 Pro X’ from amazon and was extremely impressed. Considering they are less than a 5th of the cost of the SE425s I’ve been using for years.

The clarity is amazing, I’ll try them at rehearsal on Thursday but I was very impressed. My one issue is that there is some real harshness in the mid-highs and highs? Shakers, cymbals (especially crash) are really prominent and I’m concerned they will be fatiguing?

I had a play with EQ on my computer and found a dip at around 7.9kHz took the harshness away. (see pic)

    EQ.PNG.f9cbe4f84a6ccab4f3f65076cd07e15c.PNG

So…is this something you guys have experienced? Will I get used to it (Obviously I need to use them in rehearsal before making any rash decisions)? Are any of the other ‘cheap’ alternatives better/flatter at the top end? (KZ AS16 ??), or do I need to go back to the expensive ‘brands’ and leave my ZS10s as my ‘back ups’?

My current iem setup up (Zoom H6) does not allow me to add any EQ and I’m not going to be adding a Stereo EQ pedal into my setup (e.g SOURCE AUDIO EQ2) since that would be overkill, more gear and expensive.

    Any thoughts appreciated
