  1. Up for sale is my Eminence Bass.

Fantastic sounded bass, and super portable. This is the fixed neck version.

It comes with the dedicated thick, padded soft case and a stagg stand which works great for these bass.

I've been using the bass for rehearsing and gigging multiple times a week for the last few years. I love it but now I have a 3/4 full bodied bass, I can't justify keeping both.

Happy to dig out some gig recordings from playing with Peterborough Big Band if that's if any use, to hear it in the mix (video found, linked in comment below). I've played it through a Fishman Pre and and EBS Stanley Clarke Pre and they both did an excellent job of showing off this bass's full tone and potential.

Bass is in fantastic condition and obviously comes with the standard copper head pick up, the only mark is on the lower left hand side (as you play it) and has been there since before I bought the bass 4 years ago...see photo's.

Soft Case is in great condition.

Stagg stand is a little battered from being thrown around with mic stands but works great.

Question are welcome, and feel free to come and try it out, no pressure to buy if you're just curious.

Happy to discuss options for meeting part way if a guaranteed sale but I won't be posting this instrument in it's soft case.

Jerome is also an absolutely brilliant luthier, and is currently building me a bass, which I confess to being ridiculously excited about! I'd recommend him over just about anyone

Just to update on the set up after my purchase here. Whilst it's hard to tell, it felt like the bass I bought from The Double Bass Room had had minimal set up if at all. I'm sure you could ask for a set up, but it felt very much like I was paying for a bass, not a fully set up bass.

I'm up in the midlands so I then took my bass to Bass Bags in Ripley near Nottingham and they fitted an adjustable bridge, and did a full set up for Jazz pizz for me (and installed my pick up I already had).

The bass always sounded great, not a lot of difference there, but the playability from the set up at Bass Bags made a massive difference.

The point being, for anyone who picks up this thread in the future. I don't think the Double Bass Room spend much if any time doing a setup. Your buying an instrument and then you can choose how, when and with whom you get a setup done.

    Tascam MA-8

This has 8 fantastic sounding pre-amps. I've not had a need to use it for a while, so did a quick test with my AKG  c214 condenser mic to ensure all channels were fully working, clear and with working phantom power. All channel sounded lovely (audio available on request, but it's just me say "testing channel 5" etc.)

There are 2 red knob caps missing (channel 7 and 8) as per the photos, but other than that it's a good as new.

Each channel gain has the feel of quality for something made in Japan 20 years ago. A fantastic piece of kit which will keep working for another 20+ years easily.

Comes with 'unscrew-able' feet which can be removed if you have a tight rack unit, but very useful for desktop use.

    Any questions, let me know

£85 if picked up from South Lincolnshire area or if you want it posting within the UK I can look up postage charges

Hi. Over the years I’ve restored and sold a fair few old German basses 1800-1920ish they’re always really nice and around £5k. I have one as my main gigging bass at the moment and two very similar in the workshop nearing completion.
DM me if you’d like to talk and come and try. I’m in Bath.

Thanks but you're about a week too late for me as I picked up my new bass last Monday. Cheers

  6. I just spent a wonderful couple of hours at Ben's (the double bass room). He pre-picked out a collection of basses that met my requirements and I've come away with a lovely Hungarian bass. (And a tummy full of chocolate digestives)

It just goes to show how useful it is to try loads of basses out, since it is not in a million years what I expect to get!

I thought I was going to get a slightly battered, old, dark wood bass to cherish into it's old age but came away with a much more modern lighter coloured bass. Very very happy.

A good bag will be £150 or more, a pickup a similar amount and I use the EBS Stanley Clarke which is ace. Strings and set up can vary but £300 is a good ballpark.

Good points,I currently run my Eminence through an EBS Stanley Clark into GR amp and Barefaced Cab so will be keeping all that! I was assuming I would get the standard Realist as pickup since it works will through my Stanley Clark on my current small bodied bass. (Although lifeline as opposed to copperhead to avoid damage to the wood?)

But tone wise they were pretty underwhelming.

Just something to bear in mind.

I'd recommend getting an adjustable bridge

I had noticed similar with other bass shops which had basses set up for orchestral playing - or no "setup" until the buyer chose how they wanted it set up. It makes it very difficult to differentiate between a bass that isn't right for you and a bass that isn't setup right for you??

Adjustable bridge was on my list - a did see a recent-ish thread about getting this fitter

    4 hours ago, petebassist said:

For setup, I can recommend Bassbags over in Ripley - they did my new bass when I bought it and it's been rock solid ever since.

I'm Lincolnshire so that's much closer

  8. I'm in the market to upgrade my Eminence (small bodied) double bass to a fully carved 3/4 size double bass, for use in Big Band and Jazz Quartets. I've been saving for a long time and lucky enough to have a budget of £3k-£5k.
Having done lots of research, visited a couple of shops (mainly with crazy valued basses of £8k+ which I can't afford), my next stop is likely to be "The Double Bass Room" in Battle, East Sussex. Having spoken to the owner on the phone he is confident he has a fair few suitable basses in my price range and that it is worth me making the multi-hour drive to go and see them.

    Questions:

    1. Any experience buying basses in this price range from 'The Double Bass Room'?
    2. Most of his basses state they come 'professionally set up by Kentish luthier' - anyone know what sort of a "set up" I should expect? Should I budget to pay for my own setup for my specific genre needs (having not had a standard size double bass before I would find it hard to request any personal setup requirements beyond - "I want it to sound great for Pizz Jazz")
    3. Any recommendations for places to get 'new to me, old bass' set up done (including potentially adding an adjustable bridge)
    4. Any other recommendations for places to try multiple fully carved basses in this price range? (obviously I'm keeping my eye on the forums 'for sales' but really need somewhere I can try multiple instruments to get a real feel for what I like)

    Any thoughts appreciated

  9. Testing results for using the FX in parallel as a second output:

It does technically work BUT only if you have a Y-Type insert cable to seperate the send from the return. If you plug a normal unbalanced jack cable into the FX socket, the entire pedal has no outputs whether in Paralell or Serial. I don't have a balanced jack to jack to hand to check but I assuming using a balanced Jack-to-Jack would have the same result if plugged into an unbalanced socket (amp input) since the Ring and Tip would be connected at the amp and and again disable all pedal outputs

By plugging my insert cable in and then only plugging the "ring" side into another source, I successfully got 2 outputs simultaneasly. As expected the FX send was uneffected by the mute or master volume, you get what ever volume the gain sets.

I had to have my second source very close due to the length of cable but this sort of cable would work better to plug a standard unbalanced Jack-to-Jack into if you need more length:  6.35mm Stereo Jack to 2x 6.35 Mono Jack Sockets

Hope that helps, it sounds like if this is a permanent set up then the tuner 'switch' is a better solution

  10. Another one for IEM with ambient mic here. Stood between a loud drummer, trumpets and trombones in a 19 piece big band, I'm also very grateful for the ear defense this brings. Loads of info in the "IEM bible thread"

(Using an Eminence small bodied bass I don't have feedback issues but this works well for me)

  11. This has not been touched since my rehearsal on Thursday:

Channel A is active jazz bass (volume at about 60% on the bass)

Channel B is Realist Pickup on double bass (so piezo with no volume control)

Coincidentally the 60% on my bass guitar means both input gains are pretty much the same.

Master Volume out is at about 11 o'clock.

Thanks, but I should have been clearer. All my active/passive basses are ‘too hot’ to have the input gain on the SC at anything more than ‘just on’.

I've tried loads of basses and never had the issue, definitley check your 'A+B' switch as you can see the signal will go through 2 gain pre amps as per their circuit diagram.

So after a year and a half of using the SC I have another question. Is there a simple way to modify the input resistance of one channel (like an external load box)? I know that the input resistance of the SC is 10 meg ohm which is designed for piezo style pickups.
As I’ve said before, I use the SC as my preamp with both NS EUB, and a selection of passive and active bass guitars. My passive Tony Franklin P bass appears so hot on the input of the SC that the channel gain is hardly on, and even a small amount of EQ boost has the post LED flashing away. I feel that the gain is so low that I’m actually missing something from my tone.

I’m about to receive a SushiBox ‘Finally with bass in mind’ valve pre that I want to use for my bass guitar side of things and I’m worried sticking an active pre in front of the SC is only going to make things even worse.

I've been using mine with DB and various basses (active and passive) and once had a similar situation. It turned out the cause was not the bass but that I had inadvertently knocked the (A+B) button between the inputs when pluging in. This can have the effect of running input A through Channel A and B in series, and therefore applying 2 gains. So you can turn down Channel A gain as much as you want but if Channel B gain is still turned up (from low signal double bass in my case) then you are still getting way to much signal coming through and "flash flashy LED clipping".

Might not be the situation in your case, but defininetly worth checking.

    From the manual:

    Quote

When A+B push switch is in its’ INNER position: Selects between A or A+B, i.e. either only A or A in series with B channel when only A input is used. When B channel input jack is used or XLR is selected for channel B, both channels are mixed together and the A/B foot switch has no effect.

  14. For a bit of long term feedback on the 32 bit float recording

I've been using a Tsacam Portacapture x8 for nearly a year now after my Zoom H6 fell of a mic stand.

The Portacapture is basically the same as the H6 except rather than the minimal approach of the new "essential" it goes the opposite way with a big touch screen interference.

Whilst I love the interface (although you pay a premium for it). It is the ease of the 32 bit float recording that I love. It's just so easy.

I was using it on Saturday evening (as ambient mic for in ears but also to record) and half way through the gig realised the monitor feed I had as an extra input was coming in red hot and blasting the input. Listen back afterwards and no issues. Just throw it into he DAW and hit "normalise" on the audio track and it's as if you set the most perfect gain.... love it. And from my experience with products from Zoom, I'm sure they'll be great, although really very ugly?

  15. I just had the last night of the shows and the fretless went down a treat, it really make the difference for those pieces.

All thanks to the amazing @Roger2611 for being the amazing person to actually let me borrow their bass!

Top man, had great chats when I picked it up and I'll be in touch to drop it off again.

When I made the initial request I wasn't sure it was possible...but hats off to the BassChat community and of course @Roger2611

  16. Seems like a simple thing but I can't find the answer anywhere online.

I have a patch on my GT-1000 Core which has 3 controls.

    1. Engage Octave

    2. Engage Chorus

    3. Change input (switches between input 1 (fretless bass) and input 2 (fretted bass)

The issue I have is that my 'engage oct' is not a straight forward FX it's a 'Div' => 'Oct' => 'eq' => 'mix' so that both the FX and eq get engageded at the same time meaning the display says "DIV2 CH. SEL" instead of "FX1 OCT" as you might expect.

So as you can see from the photo, I have to remember that:

    DIV2 CH. SEL = "Octave"

DIV1 CH. SEL = "Toggle inputs"

Surely there is a way for me to rename the display to some alternative text rather than remembering what every 'Div' is controlling for every patch? Anyone know how?

  17. You don't see these super often so I just wanted to vouch for this instrument.

I picked one of these up a couple of years ago (for more than you are asking!). I regularly gig it with jazz quartet and Big Band and often get complimented in its tone (especially if you can stretch to add a nice preamp designed for acoustic piezo pickup instruments)

Superb instruments and this one is at a great price
