1.
They offer fans of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Stone Roses, Jeff Buckley and so many others, the chance to see a full live show "by" their favourite bands, when the real bands are either never going to tour again or rarely ever if at all play in their home towns.
Especially if half the members are dead from the neck up and the other half are dead from the neck down. :)

  2.
There is a camp who are firmly in the "people who play in covers bands aren't musicians and have just sold their souls .....
Applying that across the board would mean that anyone who plays for a symphony orchestra, theatre pit orchestra or backs an established solo artist is not a musician. A musician is someone who plays an instrument. Period.

  3. Hi Lee

At 5' 6" I suppose I'm vertically challenged but I play both 34" and 35" scale basses. It's the smaller hands that go with the small stature that are the problem. Getting a suitable neck width and thickness is most important. Jazz string spacing at the nut is a must although I've not found too much of problem with different bridges. Strangely enough I don't like flat necks either.

Remember if Suzi Quatro can play a full-size bass then sure as hell you can.

  4. I really regret selling my 1963 Framus Star bass in 1967 and giving up playing. I should have kept it and found another way to pay for a new roof for the car, but you can't turn the clock back. If ever I could find another at a sensible price I'd have it like a shot.

  5.
If anyone has one (or both) in close proximity to my location (Crowthorne, Berkshire) any chance of a noodle?

    Cheers
    P
If you can get to Farnham you are welcome to try my DJ4 and DJ5

  6. It depends quite a bit on the size of your hands. I once bought a Fender Jazz 5 on a whim and found that I physically couldn't play it as the neck was so wide.

In terms of performance, quality of build and value the Lakland DJ5 is it.

  7. Second Time Around are at the Crown in Knaphill on Friday 24th August. This pub hit the headlines a few months ago when the landlord decided to introduce pole-dancers as an alternative to smoking. Unfortunately they don't perform on Fridays. A couple of BCers live locally and have said they are coming.

On Sunday 26th August we have the second of the Chase Hospice charity gigs at the Marlborough Head, East Street, Farnham, Surrey. This should kick-off at about 2:00pm and because of an evening gig we're on at 3:00pm for an hour. The full progam of bands runs through until closing time.

If you are in the area, having nothing to do on Bank Holiday Sunday and like live music then come and support this worthwhile event. There is no charge for admission but the collection bucket is passed around the audience regularly so you can donate what you can.

If I manage to get the full progam I'll publish it.

  8.
Quick question.

If anyone on the group has a Lakland Joe Osbourn, could they let me know whether the control plate is the same as that of a Fender Jazz please...shape, screw holes etc.

I've seen a couple of these on a similar group across the point and while I'm still thinking hard about getting a Geddy Lee, the JO is also a distinct possibility too, but I'd like to convert the JO to a stack-knob configuration and it would be easier to buy an off-the-shelf bell plate for this purpose.

    Cheers
    P
JO is exactly the same as the Fender Jazz. USA Lakland JOs have the option of a stack-pot controls.

It's the Daryl Jones that has a different plate in that it is slightly curved.

FWIW I've just built a stack-knob set-up from imported components for a Fender Jazz.

  9.
and a big thanks to Dave for sorting out the room.
Thanks. BTW my Ashbory has screw mounted tuners so that's not the cause of the G detuning itself.

  10.
.....May even bring the 1984 prototype Trace Elliot combo. :)
If you're going to do that then maybe we should have retro theme (not J-Retro) and I'll bring my WEM and Sound City bits. Anyone got a Framus Star bass?

  11. I think you could certainly say a good time was had by all. Sorry I had to go early Luke and Ped but duty called. My ears are still ringing from all that bass and then playing with a drummer with a very loud metal snare last night.

In total we had 23 attendees which made it all worth while. I missed collecting subs from a couple of people but even so, we will be donating £100 to the Meningitus Trust.

Do we want to think about another one next year, perhaps on a Sunday?

  12. Bought the Ashbory from Graham for a very reasonable figure. Posted Saturday and arrived Monday, all nicely packaged, then 10 days later a nice new set of strings arrived. Top man.

  13.
+1

    Thanks Dave...really helpful!

Just wondering two things, (i) is there a space outside where we can unload our gear before parking up for the day and (ii) is the studio on the ground floor?

    See you there,

    Nik
Yes there is room enough outside to park and unload without blocking the road. It is the ground level but there are a couple of steps up.

    See you there.

  14. This afternoon I checked with the owner of Backline and everything is OK for Saturday from 10:00am.

The entrance is directly off the Station Car Park on the Farnham/Cathedral/University side, not the town side or for those with a compass, the west side.

If you are coming by train, take the exit for the University, not the town centre exit. This brings you out into Guildford Park Road. Turn left and turn left again down the slope signed Station Car Park/Farnham Road Car Park.

If you are coming by road and end up in the one-way system, you need to take the road signed A31 Farnham. Immediately after the railway bridge is a mini roudabout. Turn left into Guildford Park Road. Turn right into Station Car Park/Farnham Road Car Park.

At the bottom of the slope, turn right.

Just in front of the bridge on the right-hand side next to the advertising hoarding are some green gates.
This is the entrance to Backline.

This is the Station Car Park which Pay and Display.

If you carry on past Backline under the bridge you get to Farnham Road multi-storey car park which is pay-on-exit.

    See you all there.

  15. I'm going into the venue tomorrow, Wednesday, just to confirm that everything is OK for Saturday.

On the day I'll bring the three Laklands and my Epi rig.

The 18th was a good date as I didn't have a gig that night but now I do so I'll have to leave a bit before the end.

  16.
Beautiful! Are you bringing her to the Bash on Saturday - would love to hear how she sounds?

    Nik

P.S. any chance of ordering some leads and collecting Saturday.....??
Yes and yes.

  17. I think you'll find that because on EH pedals the chassis connectedto 0v (-) and on Boss it's connected to +9v(+), you need to totally isolate the socket from the chassis.

I make and sell adaptor cables and I have a few odd ones that were cut slightly too short. If you want one f.o.c. then pm me.
