....Buildings and people are not basses though, and so both are almost irrelevant to the discussion ;)

Yep the car metaphor doesn't quite work in this instance.
I used to own a '64 Beetle. Definitely had desirability and wow factor. But give me my faster, quieter, comfier, maintenance free Mégane any day.

I wrote this on another forum recently.

if you do properly controlled double blind testing, it appears that professional violinists prefer modern violins to old ones.

    http://www.nytimes.c...-lags.html?_r=0

I've got a PhD in musical acoustics and know a fair bit about musicians and their perceptions of their instruments and it turns out that a lot of musicians are very fond of making definitive blanket statements like "trumpets made from white gold sound completely different to trumpets made from brass". However, subject these ideas to double blind testing and the results are never conclusive. Musicians are very perceptive, but a lot of the time they are just victims of psychoacoustics and confirmation bias.

Old guitars are just inherently cool. We guitarists love "mojo". Some old guitars are absolutely fantastic, but that doesn't mean that modern guitars aren't capable of being equally good. Same goes for violins---you may need to play an old instrument to be taken seriously as a solo violinist, but thats got just as much to do with societal pressure and expectation from within the musical community as it does the quality of the instrument. Even classical musicians love a bit of "mojo".

We should also bear in mind that the guitars that have survived from the fifties and sixties in playable condition are almost certainly the good ones. The ones that weren't as good haven't been taken care of, been cannabalised for parts, or just plain forgotten about and lost. The good examples are far more likely to have survived the years than the rubbish ones.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love an old guitar. But more for the inherent coolness of owning a piece of history, rather than because it was better than a modern equivalent.

    Cracking post Gromit.

However I'm staring to tire of the general assertion that only the best examples have made it this far. I'm sure that more than a few dogs got relegated to the uncle's loft in mint condish (or not for that matter) for not being that great in the first place. I mean we're talking mass produced commodities not a few choice gems.

OK , I'm in , this is not like the vision it started out with , and I heard dudes saying that before , but yeah I know what it means now

They should have come to you for the The Vicar of Dibley theme. :D

Which orchestra plugins are you using?

I am struggling to get soundcloud to upload mine :( , I tried last night and still no joy tonight . I dont have a clue how to get past the upload screen doing either nothing , or instantly announcing it is fully uploaded but refusing to do anything further :(

I used to have problems with soundcloud and IE. Now I'm Firefox all the way I haven't had any more grief from it.

There's an interesting Guitar Player magazine article I have (somewhere!) from '82 where the galactico guitar tech Alan Rogan is contrasting how Keith Richards prefers old guitars and Pete Townsend prefers new ...

Yeah well it is said he does likes them young..... guitars I mean. :yarr:

    Ok I’m in.

A hastily finished creation from me this month… and one that I wager will not be many people’s cup of tea! :D But meh, no matter.

Nice one. Yep not normally my cuppa chai but it honestly got my feet going. Transported me right back to when the only thing on the box after the pub was the Hitman and Her (which somehow slowly became the only thing worth watching... apart from Prisoner CBH and Sledghammer of course). I'm hearing a more modern Wipeout type feel in there too. Do I hear the game developers a'knocking? :)

The detail work is great but I think the back looks way too plain, looks like he's also used a cheapy neck off a VIntage or Aria or something.Still looks cool though, not sure I'd cough up £1.4k for it mind.

The pickup placement puzzled me too, I quite like a MM about 2cm from the bridge but that looks almost touching. Wouldn't mind hearing it though.

I imagine it would sound a little like this... :D :D

Dunno if this has been mentioned but I was reminded of this build when I spotted this bass on eBay:

    Time to cash in Rich!

Aye seen it. I like it. They've taken the carving to the next level... but I bet is sounds like crap with the pup way back there. :D
    Definitely food for thought though.

  9. A bog standard multimeter should give you the ohmage of each pup. Generally speaking more ohms = higher output (but in the grand scheme of things it's only a single factor in a complicated equation of what the pup's output really ends up being). Strangely enough, most people find that the bridge pup in a PJ setup tends to struggle against the usually more powerful P (bucker) pup so it looks like Yamaha may have found a holy grail balance. Perhaps your bridge pup isn't, as you expect, a single coil but is a bucker too? It would be interesting to see your findings on the readings of both pups.

ed to add ..... I willl have to wait until late evening when all the neighbours are indoors with their TVs on , its a nice day at the moment and if any are out walking their dogs, I fear if they hear my opera, the dogs would scare me with the mess they might leave on the pavement
I get real self conscious about the neighbours when I record vocals at home too. I stick my head in the Mrs' packed wardrobe as a sort of sound proof room. :D

Why do some people around here find it necessary to be absolute Cs to one another based upon their preferences in bass guitars? Honestly, I get sick of it. How did this thread become a R vs S thread? Because people are being absolute Cs to one another.

I Fn hate Basschat sometimes, and this is one of these times. Go and play some Fn bass and stop being A-holes.

    I alphabet someone's had a wee dram tonight. :D
    Well said mate.

I wrecked an SX P. I didn't like the orange varnish on the neck, and tried to remove it with chemicals. The varnish came off, but left the wood a dirty brown, with dark streaks in the grain. So I took the frets off in the hope I could sand it clean. But sanding didn't help, and I couldn't get several of the frets back. In the end Rich (Ou7shined) bought the neck off me, worked some magic and made a nice new bass, so it wasn't entirely wasted, but that was my last attempt at refinishing anything.
And I'm still in the process of wearing it out .... the long way. :D

  13. Isn't it just a stack pot Fender with the front cover over the bridge (maybe for foam muting)? The pg looks like it's pretty flimsy material - you can see where the thumb-rest was.

edit : Zoiks! You've mentioned most of that already. :D

It's this sort of playing that puts that "plodding bass lines" thread to bed imho. :)

I prefer to keep the P in it's exact sweetspot, and put up with the MM a couple of mm nearer the neck.

There are, of course, many ways of getting it right. For me, I always use the measurement from the 12th fret. So, for a Stingray pickup, the centre of the pickup, between the two rows of polepieces, needs to be 13.5" from the 12th fret.
Slight disparity in these two posts ..... but yes the important thing is to measure from the frets.
You are actually taking your measurement from the nut but it is far more convenient to use a fret as relative starting point.
I think people are possibly mistaking the positioning of the bridge as a fixed and finite thing. All bridges have differing designs and therefore differing footprints and so the placement is arbitrary - within a tolerance. Even stating the instrument's scale as 34" is just a guide to it's proportions, as rarely if ever do the strings come in at 34" (bridge saddle to nut distance) once it has been intonated. Therefore all measurements must be taken from the nut ... or your preferred fret.
