I take it you probably don't want me to do that layout diagram then? I did actually get halfway through it, thought I'd finish it off the next day but in the intervening period managed to sever a nerve in my right index finger. Which kind of put a damper on anything that involved using a pen.

Good god man no. You get yourself better first... if its at all fixable. The last thing any of us bass players needs is nerve damaged fingers (a constant fear of mine in my day to day work).
Maybe once you're all better you can update the thread with your circuit for future Pangborn users in a similar predicament.

That looks great, looking forward to seeing this finished. Are you planning on using a looper to mix guitar and bass parts when playing live?

Cheers. Yup that's the idea. Also the pedal board I use in this project has a Unibass at it's heart to produce a guitar sound from the bass too.

That's pretty shocking for what would have been an expensive bass when new.
BTW the trade name for that stuff is VERO board, generic name is strip board.

Yup I've used it many times. But I've not made a mess like that since I first started making my own projects way back in the 80s. :D

  4. I made my on-board fuzz prototype. It was supposed to be for the guitar but my tests find that it might sounds best on bass.... so I'm now making a separate DAM Meathead on board for the guitar ....

I've tidied up the guitar neck heel. When I first got it it had been literally smashed from it's body - luckily the neck survived intact.

Template finished and all set to rout....

Hopefully get a chance to trim and start routing today :)

  5. Been kinda busy and I've neglected this thread a bit.

Here's some pics of the what's been going on (when I've had time) ....

A more consolidated idea of the final thing.
The "rake" on the guitar neck is a tad exaggerated here though.... oh and I no longer want to have the treble pup at an angle.

Some ideas for possible scratch-plates should I go front routed...

Rough cut out of the template plus my calculations of pup placement.... yes I'm one of those weirdos that like to place pup pole-pieces on harmonic nodes....

    I got wood...

    prepped, glued and clamped....

You could always just paint a black humbucker-sized rectangle on to the guitar near the bridge to retain the purity but keep the 'balanced' look!

Seriously though this looks like it will be another great project and I look forward to seeing how it progresses!

Hahah why didn't I think of that. :D

  7. Just a quick update.

A couple of Pangborn buffs advised me to do as they did and rip out the dodgy original pre and replace with something better. So after discussing our options (the restrictive size of the control cavity being a factor) the owner and I decided to go for an Aguilar pre. That out of the way, I decided to dissect the original Pangborn preamp. Those of a nervous disposition please look away....

Trust me the picture makes it look much better than it actually is. Real amateur hour stuff. How it was felt appropriate to put work of this quality out in a finished instrument is beyond me.

If it works for you, and gets the result that you want, then it is the right solution for you - If we all did things the same then the world would be a pretty boring place.

    Absolutely.
I'm just going on gut feeling and a teeny bit of science. Let's hope it pays off. :)
