1. Electro Harmonix do one aswell, that I believe was quite highly rated by BP Magazine? Maybe worth checking out? I think it's a bit more expensive than the Ashdown or Boss though.

  2. My 4U rack contains 3U of Ampeg SVT and 1U of blank rack strip! I got one without vents though as I believe this gives a much better definition to the low end and a slightly more compressed midrange.

    :)

  3. Are you just talking about normal home practice? If you are, then either will be fine. Those PC speakers are designed to handle lows, that's what the sub is for, so you should be fine. The studio monitors will definitely give you a better sound but I wouldn't spend any more than I had to on them if you are just using them for bass.

I played a '78 Precision exactly like that last Sunday night - amazing bass! Really gave me the GAS for a 70's bass of some sort, being the first one I've played!

Lovely basses btw Nash (or should that be nash?) :)

  5.
I heard somewhere that clear nail varnish can be used to cover dings in Laquer?

cheers for that, i'll have a word with my local luthier
Or perhaps your local girlfriend? :)

  6. Vastly underrated player, he obviously knows the fretboard inside out which you can see when he fills. I think even his playing on 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is brilliant, not exactly flashy or overly technical but extremely melodic and tasteful!

  7.
Other = Hofner, currently 9 of them, all from the 60's (bar my 500/1 1963 re-issue).

I look pretty young but I'm just back-dated.
There's really no Substitute for a genuine Hofner

  8. For drum mics, I highly recommend the Superlux DRK-B5C2 mic set. I bought them on a recommendation I read online some time ago for the band, and they are simply fantastic! Great sounding mics, very focused sounds with minimum spill. Also very compact. The bass drum mic is just sublime! Punchy and with lots of bass. They retail for somewhere around the £350 but are worth every penny IMO. Definitely an alternative to the Shure or AKG sets which have become industry standards.

As regards vocal and instrument mics, the SM58 for vocals and SM57 for guitars amps are also industry standards. As mentioned, Rode make great condensers for recording vocals and they can also be used as overheads if necessary. If you want a change from the standard Shure range for budget recording, Audix also make great mics (the OM2 and OM3 spring to mind).

  9.
GAS is one demanding mistress!!!
Haven't you got another demanding mistress to worry about though? How'd u sneak that one past her? :)

  10. Nice work! Could you perhaps add a little formatting to it, so that it's easier to see where one category of valves ends and the other begins? Sorry for being a critic but this has sticky potential I think :)

  11. Hello all,

Just a wee poll for us BCers to get an idea of the spread of basses that we all use!

Apologies if I've left any major manufacturers out...hopefully I've covered most of them :)

    Cheers,

    Danny

  12. You mentioned about replacing everything - would it not be better just to buy a new bass in that case? Definitely sounds like an ambitious project, are you going to do the whole lot yourself? If you do, keep us all updated on the Bass Porn section (or maybe there's a Build forum, not really sure with this new forum yet! :))

  13.
All recording was done with the P or an acoustic (on Start)
That was really an acoustic? I'd always wondered how he got that strange sound. It's not dissimilar to his Precision Bass tone, it seems to be EQ'd the same but with less high end. Cheers for the info :)

  15. It's really just a sound thing. Double basses are a lot smoother than electric basses, and don't usually have as much sustain or punch. You can also use a bow with a double bass which is an advantage in an orchestra situation. Maybe if you tried experimenting with a fretless electric bass you may impress the director, but be warned that this is like learning a whole new instrument!

Of course the disadvantages are the size, weight, ease of use in a live situation (as regards micing etc), and for some, the look is a big disadvantage.

Overall it's your choice. If you want to keep your place in the orchestra, you may find that learning the double bass is not the best way to go about it. I'm sure the director would rather have an accomplished double bassist in than one who is only starting out. Maybe have a chat with him and see if what you're doing is what he's looking for? Personally I don't think a double bass is a necessity in a jazz orchestra, maybe in a classical orchestra, but there's no way you should automatically be ejected just because you use an electric bass.

  16. Here's a couple of pictures of my Warwick, a 1997 Streamer Stage II which I purchased from Largo who used to post on these forums a few moons ago! I have kept it in great nick over the years and these pictures really hide her age, she's 10 this year! It has been my main gigging bass since I got it 3 years ago - I have on occasion used my fretless Precision for some blues gigs but my trusty Warwick has never let me down!

    Body

    Fretboard

    The specs are standard -

    - Afzelia Body
    - Ovangkol Neck
    - Wenge Fingerboard
    - Yin Yang Inlays
    - MEC Active J Pickups
    - MEC Active 3 Band EQ w/Push Pull Active to Passive switch

I have a few more lurking around somewhere but for the life of me, I can't find them at the mo!

    Anyway....that's my baby!
