Aren't we choosing to ignore the 'mojo' imparted on these instruments, lovingly cared for and photographed at their best..? Perhaps the seller is a 'star' name, who's mere signature on the receipt would enhance the value (perhaps into 5 figures..!). Could be some bargains here...
-
Just play it as a 3-string bass, no-one plays that skinny little 1st string anyway...

Yes, but you were out, weren't you..? -
MIM=Made in Mexico

My problem is that I already have one, otherwise it would already be here. Someone is missing out on a great instrument here. Shame on us all...

Small sum involved, but excellent transaction. Description complete and helpful, posted immediately (to France...), no hassles. A pleasure.
Many thanks, Andy -
Ah, quite so, they just don't make anything any more like that good old '95 plywood. Now when I was a boy... (...wanders along the corridor muttering to his walking frame, pyjamas half open and drooling slightly...)
...i'm cautious of not carrying enough wattage
Good evening, jigster...
You're carrying enough wattage. You have enough for playing outdoors (more especially as there's a FOH PA...). Is the guitar impinging on your frequency band, though..? -
Good afternoon, Martin...
I see you're on the Isle of Wight. Have you got electricity yet..?
(No, just kidding; I do things the empirical way too. Not always so proud of the results, though..!) -
Good evening, 'Nostromo'...
...One of my best bass mates just sent me a text saying...sell the D140's...order a barefaced Dubster...
I wouldn't want to bust up any long-standing friendships, but I don't think I'd class a Dubster as 'Old school vintage', even less so when compared to D140s. There are many guitarists using these 15" speakers, they are almost classable as 'full-range' (certainly not limited to only sub-bass...). No disrespect to Barefaced, of course, but it's not at all comparable.
The D140 (and K140...) are in a different league, and, to me at least, define 'vintage' bass. Can't be done with more modern (more efficient, lighter, more powerful...) cabs, which are excellent in their own right. They're just not 'vintage' sounding. A Porsche Boxster is (probably...) a fine car, but it's not the same sensation as an MG TF, or Austin-Healey 3000.
I see from your sig. that you are already equiped with (excellent...) modern cabs. Try your D140's in a chipboard box, Bassman sized; if you really don't like the result you'll have spent very little; if you like it, upgrade the woodwork according to budget and taste.
Just my tuppence worth...
(I'd be careful just the same about 'diming' the DR405 into such a cab; the chipboard will not resist for long..!) -
But then again, I'm old... -
I have a K140 and a D140... both may need a recone. One certainly would.
PM sent (looking good... ) -
Good evening, Nostromo...
A simple solution perhaps would be to obtain a Fender Bassman 2 x 15 cab..? They came with (optional...) K140s, and, imho, sound top. I have such a cab, but, for lack of funds to equip with K140s, I've installed Beyma equivalents. If I get the opportunity, I shan't hesitate to swap out for the real JBLs (anyone got a pair spare, affordable..?).
There's certainly not much scientific hocus pocus in the Fender 'design' (it's basically just a biggish box...), but it fits the bill for me as far as '60s/'70s sound goes (Hofner Verithin bass, Hiwatt DR203 amp; can't get much more vintage than that, but then, I'm old...)
Hope this helps. -
...but your shirts are nice and crisp now..!

Good evening, Andy...
Bought; request for postage to France sent. Payment follows.
Many thanks. -
Still unsold..? Something shifty here...

Transistor amps, such as the Hartkes and many others, are only sensitive to being overloaded by a too low ohmage, and have a minimum to be respected (4 ohm for HA2500, for example...). A higher ohmage will cause no damage, but will limit the O/P power. As long as the minimum is respected, there is no risk to the amp from any speaker load.
Valve amps, with O/P transformers, on the other hand, need to have the correct impedance. An incorrect setting could (and probably will...) cause the valves to overload the transformer, which fails, sometimes taking out the valves themselves. This is usually very expensive to repair. This is why there is an impedance-matching device for valve amps able to drive various speaker loads (there is a transformer winding or tap for each impedance...). The correct setting is more than highly recommended. -
It's a respectable hobby for some folks (and some 'knobs, too, perhaps..!) to 'relic' scale models to give them some degree of 'authenticity'...

...some are better than others, and anyway, to each his own.
As far as basses (and guitars, drums, amps etc...) are concerned, I have enough patience to wait the 30 years or so required to get the 'real thing' (my drums, bought new in '74 or so, no longer look 'new'...). -
Pays the rent, I suspect.

Good evening, all...
I've decided to branch out from my current production (see example...)...

...and propose hand-carved solid Italian marble basses. I will need a model or two to get my patterns right; could you please PM if you have a couple of Jazzes, Precisions or Rickies that you could lend me for a while? I will offer a decent discount to those helping me in this way. Prices..? Not quite sure yet (awaiting a truckload of rock from Padua any day now...), but would around £50 seem fair (less for those who lend me their instruments, of course...)? I can't produce many (hand carving takes time, you know...), but I can start delivery in about 2015. The basses lent to me will be mollycoddled (as is fitting for a model...), and will be returned as soon as I have no further use for them.
Incidently, with my patented carving process, I can do an excellent tortoiseshell finish, if required, or even imitation carbon fibre.
Thanks in advance for your kind generosity, you will be amply rewarded.
