  1. I was recently looking for a small combo for home / small gig / monitor.
I looked at Fender Rumble (which I use as my main gigging rig), Markbass, TC and ended up walking out with a GK MB110.
10", 100W, DI out, nice EQ, very, very lightweight, aux in, headphone socket and the option to add one of their powered cabs at a later date if required. I even used it at a small wine bar gig the other night (as a monitor for my EUB). I'm really impressed and all for less than £300.

  2. Spent some time following the 'John Carruthers' set up videos with this bass and then took it to rehearsals.
I've played a few Jazz basses over the years and this one ( set up to my liking) does put a smile on my face.
I actually find the tone shaping a little limited compared to my other JB's but it does a great job of producing a traditional passive tone and the looks, weight (lack of it) and the neck are really growing on me.

  3. I decided to get the basses out today so for all those interested.. (Left to right)

My 'DIY' Pino P bass. Fender Mexican body with American Deluxe neck, flats and plays like butter
    Fender Tony Franklin Fretless
Fender Okoume Active Jazz Bass with all the hardware swapped for gold finish
    D'Angelico Semi Acoustic in grey/black
Fender 'Flea' Roadworn Passive Jazz bass

(I decided to give the Double Bass a miss)
    Cheers,
    FP

  4. I have a Jazz bass.
    I don't particularly like pink.
    I'm indifferent to the RHCP.
    And I don't need this.

However......I tried one out today and it's now sitting in my guitar rack.

Nice weight and a lovely playable neck. All it requires is a truss rod adjustment to get the action lower and maybe, some alternative strings and I'll be up and running.

Ha, FP, I've been rumbled. Were you there in a professional capacity? I made my annual visit as a punter, I live three miles away, although I had to do a Fri lunchtime gig.

I was slightly underwhelmed by the bands on the main stage, although Jamie Cullum's set was great. He's neither rock nor jazz but puts on a great show. It was the second stage where all the best stuff was at. Wilko was introduced on stage by the surgeon who saved him. Beverly Knight fronted the Staxs band and the two standouts were Booker T - rocking to Green Onions in an Oxfordshire field- and the Zombies set - with three of the original members - left everyone open-mouthed.

Same as you..just watching (although I did have to leave Saturday morning to do a gig at another festival before returning Saturday night).
As you say, Jamie Cullum was entertaining and Booker T..I never knew he had such a great voice! Enjoyed Wilko and Norman on Friday evening though.

Well, if you've brought up the matter of hard cash, BA55 ACE cost me £1600 eight years ago. I have no doubt (actually I know) that when I come to sell the plate I'll get a decent return on the purchase price. If I had spent that on an 'extra' when I bought the new car chances are it would depreciate to zero with the price of the car not far behind. So whatever ones opinion of those who display personal plates, and we're all entitled to that, it's spurious to suggest that they're a wast of money. It won't float everyone's boat but it gives me and my musical friends a bit of a smile from time to time. And as a freelance musician, last year 15 bands, my plate is no hindrance.

The only other thing is that other bass players always know where you've been ;) - how did you find the Cornbury Music Festival ? ( I was the one admiring your number plate from the car behind!
    Cheers

  7. As a massive fan of Incognito from their first album, I've really enjoyed this new one and personally, I find it much more consistent than Amplified Soul.

I saw them perform the first two tracks live last night at the FOLD Festival in London and they both came across really well.
As you say, nice to see Stuart Zender making an appearance on the album and co-writing the first track but over the years they have had some excellent bass players (Paul 'Tubbs' Williams, Randy Hope-Taylor, Julian Crampton and Francis Hylton, etc.)

Already booked to see them at Ronnie Scott's in September as I never get bored of seeing them playing live.

  8. Saw Norman and The Blockheads last night - it was one of the great bass performances I think I've seen.
They're a band that I like (not love) but it ended being one of my favorite gigs and I'm so glad I got to see them live.

  9. Just been listening / watching some of the Jacob Collier songs/videos.
At the risk of being controversial, I admire his musicianship and inventiveness and all the positives that come from a young musician experimenting with his art but.....the end result just leaves me a bit underwhelmed. I didn't make it through to the end of most of the songs and as much as I wanted to like it, I just couldn't imagine when I would sit back and think, I know, I want to listen to a Jacob Collier song. Horses for courses and all that but I guess I just didn't 'get it'.....or maybe I'm an old fart?

I just played an Elite P in Cardiff PMT. Absolutely loved it!

I've just bought one and I agree, really enjoying it. I actually went into the shop looking for an active dual humbucker (Musicman Classic Sabre) and spent time a/b'ing this, the Sabre, Elite Jazz, Deluxe P and a custom shop.
The neck on the Sabre wasn't for me, the Elite Jazz was just too bright (kept cutting the treble to get a tone I liked) but (IMO) the neck and tone (Fender Noiseless N4 pickups) of the Elite P was superb.
Personally, I find the combination of the PJ spot on as it gives me the tone I'm after (not too dark but not overly bright) and I'm now a convert with this and my Tony Franklin fretless.

  11. Hats off to BGM for putting on another good show. Only spent this afternoon there and enjoyed getting some time with some beautiful crafted basses such as Marvit, Gillett and Schack.
Th Q&A with Rhino was entertaining (less so with Suzi IMHO) but a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

To be fair with Rhino, he had to cancel a UK and European tour because of a serious illness and the drummer filled in at very late notice. Mass mental were banging.

...he also mentioned today how nervous he was..

  13. I'm a regular attendee to MM gigs and I thought that The Barbican gig was one of his better ones. Bigger band and more energy than the last couple of times I've seen him.
He certainly made that (circa £400) Sire bass sound good but, as mentioned above, when the '77 Jazz came out it sounded much deeper and refined.

  14. I was in a very similar situation as the OP with no experience and not too much time to spend on going through the options. I just needed something quick and straightforward to get our music onto the main download and streaming sites at a reasonable cost.
In the end, I went for CDBaby as it seemed to be well presented, with clear instructions, clear pricing, good support and gave us the results we wanted.
Just received our first payment and so far so good.

  15. So, one gig under my belt with the Bassbone OD and here's a quick review;

My set up was exactly as the diagram on the Radial website with passive Jazz bass in channel B and my upright in channel A.
Di out to the PA and using a small 1x12 combo for on stage monitoring and two pedals in the effects loop ( MXR Micro Amp and Zoom MS60B multi effects) + Korg pitchblack in the tuner output.

Initial comments are that it did exactly what I hoped for. Easy to switch channels and the separate gains and EQ for each channel meant that once set up, the sound guy seemed to be a happy bunny. I would say that my DB sounded as good as when I ran it through my Fishman Pro (which is what I was hoping for) and based on lasts nights venue (Boomy stage with a bouncy floor), there was no feedback problems. (I used the HPF at 150Hz). I also received some good comments from the audience!

Most of my niggles came with the effects loop (which I sometimes use with the Jazz). The 'always on' dip switch created a rather unpleasant hum which also appeared when I selected the MXR pedal manually so maybe I'll move them to the front of the channel input rather than the effects loop to see if that solves it.

The only other thing worth mentioning is that it does take a 15v power supply so not able to use my existing pedal board 9 v daisy chain.

Other than that, it's a very solid piece of kit and does what it says on the tin.
Two more gigs on Saturday so let's see how it goes.
    Cheers.
