  1. No I did not feel good about messing with the rods. Thought that I was buying light guage strings. Last ones were Elixir. Have loosened them and re thinking. What guage and make of string then. I do like the feel of flats on the fingers

  2. I have a 78 Rick 4001. Just re strung it with Rotosound Jazz flats 110 - 50. The action is very high. I had a pro set up a year and a half ago as I don 't feel comfortable messing with the double truss rod. Seemed OK at the time. Do these instruments have a high action anyway...the neck is pretty thin ..or do I need lighter strings...its getting expensive trying different strings...or do I need another set up.

  3. I have a Kania contrabass. I love the instrument but I am disappointed in the output to the amp. Use a Gage Realist and Fishman pro pre but still seems very quiet. The instrument itself is very quiet so think that I need a peizo pup. Maybe the the pup is gubbed or it is the wrong pup to use. I contacted Kania and they recommended the Shadow pup but don't want to spend sheds and still have the same output. Was looking at a Full Circle. Anyone had the same problem?

  4. I also have a Realist. I did think that the output was low but since I am new to DB I thought that it was normal. I also get a slight backgroud hiss every time I strike a note. The instrument maker suggested that it could be an earthing issue. i hav new leads and the amp seems OK with the ebass. Think that I will look into another pup. They suggest a Shadow Sx 965. Will look at Bassmax

  5. Yes the stroboclip looks great but priceee. The idea of a good clip on is appealing. A chain of appliances is a bit annoying. I use a fishman pre into the tuner then into the amp. Could end up like a guitarist ye gods forbid. I remember paying around 60 squid for my TU12 when it first came out, probably 20+ years ago so gadget prices have remained stable and have gone down in real terms. I think that I am uncontrollably talking myself into the stroboclip. I mostly record although do not rule out gigging. The Kania contrabass sound requires micing up as well as the piezo so all these things can divert you from actually playing accurately

  6. Really glad that I started this conversation. It has beat out some ideas that I previously had. It has also put me off Ebloke for this sort of purchase. Will put on me bits and start tramping round the geetah shops.........the only shops that I voluntarily enter anyway. Thanks for the opinions.

  7. I did look at Lakland. I have a 78 Rick and a MM SUB but have always been a fan of Precisions but with several thousand out there I am at a loss. I suppose I have always had the (unjustified) rule of thumb that the older the wood, the better the sound. Will out in a bit more work into this

  8. I have a Kania Da Gamba contrabass with a Realist pick up. I play through a Roland Cube 100 but don't use any of the amp effects. Also runs through a fishman plat pro bass pre amp(and a tuner). Recently developed a soft hiss when I sound a note. There is no hiss using my ebass and the amp sounds good. Tried all the adjustments on the pre amp and the amp itself (and tuner). Only thing that I can think of is that the pick up is faulty.....or that DG Realist is the wrong pup for this instrument. It also seems that I have to turn the amp up to 3/4 volume to get a sound. I am pretty new to DB so don't have much exp with amplifying them although I have been playing for decades and recording for years. Anyone had similar problems or comments?

  9. Luthiers (or them that know) out there..........my studio where I keep my precious (es)....is damned cold at night. I am sure it goes below freezing regularly. How good is that for my instruments. I turn the heating on every evening and tune them as often as I can.. I have seen them a half tone tight. A bit concerned about the wood n glue in my DB, the thin neck on my Rick and acoustic Gees.
