How well does this work with a bass?
-
One last thing , does anyone know where I can get it set up and have the pickup fitted, I live in Birmingham.
I've got a Shadow SH 965 NFX, which has a pretty good sound, and is easy to fit yourself (as long as you're happy to loosen your strings and lift your bridge feet ).
Oh, and get an endpin wheel. And lots of handles on a gig bag are a Very Good Thing, too. -
I didn't mean that there was anything wrong with the example as such, because the two companies have and do co-exist. I only wanted to say that the matter had been through the courts.
Right oh. Although that was mainly because Apple Corps is famously litigious, and fiercely protective of their property, and also very rich, not because they necessarily had a good case. At least as far as the name apple goes; the logo is another matter entirely - the "rainbow apple" was clearly sailing pretty close to the wind.
Anyway, it now occurs to me now that Everclear would have been a much better example, as both a booze and band.
Like I said, it all depends; there's no hard and fast rules...
So much (too much?) of the law is like that. -
Well, the original dispute over the use of the name 'Apple' and the 'Apple logo', goes back to the late 1970s and predates Apple Computers venturing into music.
OK, so maybe Apple wasn't the best example. It was just the first to come to mind. How about Badass, instead. A bass bridge, a leather cream, and a burger... -
If you are interested... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Corps_v_Apple_Computer
Interested? I'm a law student! -
Although the dispute over the use of the name 'Apple' did go as far as the High Court - both sides could afford expensive lawyers.
But only when Apple Computers ventured into music. -
according to songfacts, Ron Wood played bass on it. Edit: Ah, other information suggests Ronnie Lane. But other info suggests that only Wood, Danny Thompson, or Andy Pyle could have played it.
Well, as it's played on an bass guitar it's certainly not Danny, who hasn't played the bass guitar since a single tour in the 50s (with Roy Orbison?) -
Bazooka Joe gum is alive and well and still for sale. Unless they're stupid it'll be a registered trademark. Expect the cease and desist letter soon !!
Depends. Even registered trademarked names aren't universal [designs and logos are different]. They are registered for, and restricted to, the sphere in which they are used. So we can have, say, a computer manufacturer and a music publishing company sharing a single fruity trademarked name. Unless you use the bubblegum imagery (or otherwise imply any kind of connection or endorsement) they don't really have a strong, or, probably, any, legal case. However, they do have more money, [s]guns[/s] and lawyers, and you don't...
I used to be in a band named after a bus company!
You could rename as something close, say Bazooka Go ? -
I used to have a fretless version - unlined maple fingerboard too (?!)- sort of dark reddish body.
Lovely colour - I had a Marathon 4 in that colour. I think Shergold called it burgundy.
I did wonder about de-fretting this one, but sanity got the better of me.
If ever there was a bass I shouldn't have let go of that was it...
I suspect I'll regret it, too; but needs must - law school fees are awfully steep! -
Well here are the bad ones until I gave up.
thunder 1a and thunder 1 a fretless
Thanks! Looks good, but I think it's a bit too black for me, I'm afraid! -
Got any pictures? I do like pictures!
Fancy a trade for a 2006 US Highway 1 P-bass?
Oh, I do, as that's a good offer, and a really smashing bass.
But I'm selling so I can buy Delberthot's Epi EB-3!
And a new 15" cab.
AND MORE BEER. -
But alas too poor unless you want a 400w all tube power amp
That's not at the top of my current want list, to be honest
Although it does sound rather wonderful! -
I know a lot of Shergolds have cracked paint. Has this been refinished at some point?
Nope, it's the original finish. Like I said, it does have a few cracks, they're just not the usual canyons, so I guess it's just been lucky. -
After it being in my family for nearly 30 years, I've reluctantly concluded that I no longer have a real musical need for my Marathon 6 string bass, serial number 7004 . So, here it is, up for sale.
For those who don't know, this is a late 70s narrow-necked 30" scale six-string bass, tuned EADGBE (or EADGCF, in my case). It's probably best known as the bass that Hooky plays. (He reputedly owns 6 of the mere 95 that were ever made.) Its history is detailed here. It's notable for having a narrow neck, for a sixer - it's no aircraft carrier - string spacing at the bridge is just 12mm, and the zero fret is just 50mm wide. The neck is two-piece maple, and the body is obeche, like almost all Shergolds (and many of the Burns and Haymans that Shergold also made).
Bigger versions of the photos here
As you can see, it's in pretty good condition, and includes the original case. It's a real player, and has been regularly played, and well looked after, these last 30 years (but very seldom gigged). It's never been hidden away in the attic to moulder.
Plus points: absolutely nothing is missing! Original pickup, pots, wiring, bridge, machines, etc. The neck is straight, almost totally ding-free (just two - see pictures), the action is beautifully low, about 2-3mm at the 12th fret, and no buzzes, anywhere . There's very little fret wear, and no wear on the fingerboard. Inevitably, the paint job has a few cracks, but those that there are are pretty small - it's one of the best I've seen. It also has its original case. Currently, it has Warwick straplock pins, but I'll be refitting the original ones.
Minus points: the control plate is cracked (but that's replaceable), the knobs aren't original, and a steel tail piece has been added to allow the use of long-scale strings. This was done back in the days when I couldn't find suitable strings, and couldn't persuade anyone to custom-wind a set (Newtone do this, these days), and it seemed better to do this than leave it string-free and warp the neck. (Currently, it's wearing a set of Elites, 100-30, and they sound pretty damn good!). It's not routed for the tailpiece, so removal would be easy, and only leave a few small screw-holes. There's some corrosion on the pickup polepieces, and the brass bridge saddles could do with a polish!
SOLD! [s]I'm asking £475 (OBO) for this[/s]. I don't want to put on the 'bay, even though one went there recently for £561 (or £631)!
I think that covers it all, but if you want any more info, please ask.
Same goes for specific pictures of any details. -
Or better still, try ordering from Stringstar.
And they've got LaBella Black Nylons!
At a better price than Thomann. -
How about Kennau Reeves?
His vanity band "Dogstar" was also truly miserable.
Also he had this upright bass that had a head of a lion carved into the headstock..... bizarre looking thing.
Charles Mingus had one of them, too.
Which kind of suited his temperament, I think. -
I agree hooky. what a nob! Why didn't he just buy a guitar
You could say the same for Lemmy.
The Shergold 6 is a great bass, by the way. -

Martyn always had exquisite taste in bassists: Thompson D, Thompson A, and GIblin J.
