1. Good points from Buzz - if you can pay all costs to parents and reassure them that you will not drive like a tit (and f***ing mean it - a car is a lethal weapon when young adults start behaving like kids), then you'll save a fortune but still get the driving experience. Also look into the pass plus thing to get that first year premium down whenever you do sort it out.

  2. It'll fit in a black cab - unless you'll be gigging with it twice a week or more then I'd suggest you don't bother getting a car. You'll spend £800 on a car that will need regular work done on it unless you are very lucky - even then £200 over one year would be a conservative estimate for an old car. Then you will have spend £1K+ on insurance, then you will have to tax it and put petrol in (call it £1k over the year). That's c.£3K a year or £58 a week so if you ain't gigging regularly then getting taxi's and buying the odd pint/curry for the designated band driver will pale into insignificance - then you can save a little, spend a little and by the time you feel that you really want (it's never need is it :)) a car to pootle around in (about 21 normally when you get a girlfriend who lives miles away so your car = getting your oats) then insurance will be a good bit cheaper and you might even be earning more.

  3. I think £595 is a wee bit rich for me - I did a spares or repairs with new OT, new caps, valves (7027's are readily available now and not very expensive) & general TLC from my local tech plus bought a set of spare valves and all amounted to around £400 although this was a 76ish V4 and they don't look as nice. I take it this is an early 70's job? Also, where are you based?

  4.
Actually I'm getting close to this as I'm switching basses, amps, pedals and levels of blend from my board

But I'm considering the T-rex Mac1 as it has 2 blendable effect loops :)
Are you sure the switchblade loops aren't blendable? I'd be amazed if not. It's an amazing bit of kit; our guitarist had the 16GL until the lockup got broken into....... I searched online for this for ages as it's such a distinctive piece of kit but to no avail.

  5. Sound Sculpture Switchblade - pretty much the most flexible and comprehensive switching device available (without re-mortgaging anyway) - 16 sends/returns with variable gain and also amp switching into the bargain. Midi controlled and a pretty much infinite number of routing options i.e. want pedals 3 12 and 15 all on? Ok done, what order do you want them in the signal path though? 15, 3, 12 please! Then another patch, I want 12, 3, 15 in series all parrallel with loop 2 whilst you also switch channels on my amp. Done, sir.

Only worth the investment for a pro or extreme - like far, far worse than Tayste or Dood - gear whore who needs to combine different amps, pre's, rackmount fx, stomp boxes etc. in any configuration imaginable.

  6. I can't believe that one of the two biggest problems with schaller locks hasn't been mentioned. We've sorted the whole screw coming undone thing with the better boston locks, but what about the fact that you end up with oily black gunk on your schaller strap buttons after lots and lots of use just from the friction/dirt combining to create an oil like substance which you then inadvertantly get on your white t-shirt when playing without a strap and leaning over to one side to nub your fag out/change fx settings/get a drink/plug in tuner.

Dunlops the contact points are not exposed when the strap isn't fitted. Marvellous.

  7. Don't haggle for too long - that's a good deal.

    Here's my tuppence worth:

Has anyone ever used a peavy rig as mentioned but bypassed the pre-amp?

I find that the pre-amp is always the weakest link in a peavey (except for the old T-max head - that was damn good). I plugged into a max700 head and 410 TVX and thought it sounded a bit cack, albeit with plenty of power and lows. Then I bypassed the pre and just used a Sansamp BDDI: you would have to spend a shitload of cash to get anything beyond that. The peavey cabs are great (remember the old <$1000 4x10 shootout in Bass Player magazine years ago? The peavey came second out of 10 cabs, IIRC it was only beaten to the top spot by Eden) and the power sections are very good too.

If you get a used sansamp (about £100), you'll be wetting yourself with laughter when there is little discernable difference between your peavey rig and the other guys £1k plus Ampeg set-up. Your DI will probably sound better too.

  8. Excellent quick payment and very chilled when it took me over a week to post it (Rockstand 7's are a bitch to pack up small enough to take to work on your bike!). Cheers, bud.
