1. Isn't this the problem with a lot of ebay purchases in that you don't have the 'try before you buy' option. I have a few old Fender basses (60's/70's) which I bought years ago from, wait for it...... ordinary, good old fashioned music shops. These shops used to have a selection of both new and old instruments for sale. You examined, tried and then you made a decision to purchase or not in the shop. The sad thing is that, with the exception of a few specialist shops that seem to charge the earth for anything that's 'old', you can't do this anymore. I have never bought off ebay and this poor bloke from Burton with his '74 Jazz makes me think that I probably never will.

I must be getting old.........

I can't stay quiet any longer....... enough is enough........

Why is it that grosa has got away with using a naughty word?

Come on welsh speakers say something against this filth!!

..........'cacha' indeed....... standards have certainly dropped (into the gutter) :)

Nice one!

(I wonder how many people will try an online Welsh/English translator...... erm........)

3. Drums - started at 9 years old, finished two years latter (broken arm - playing footy!)
Keyboard - off and on for the next two and a half years (far too complicated!)
Guitar - started at 15 years old, still play at home (at present have a Gibson Les Paul Special, an Ovation electro-acoustic and a small Laney valve combo), still can't play a decent solo!
Bass - started at 16 years old, still learning, nearly 33 years later!

4. During the 1980's, the band I was with supported:

Alexei Sayle - even more bonkers off stage than on!
John Otway - nice bloke
Liquid Gold - (can anyone remember 'Dance yourself dizzy'?) an experience!

My bestest claim to fame...... I know it's slightly off topic.... but with the same band we did record in the Rolling Stones Mobile once and for a laugh, when the tape was running, I played the bass line to Smoke on the Water...... :)

Great memories........

5. What are your thoughts on instruments that have had headstock/neck repairs....

I always walk away when I see such repairs (yes, I know some repairs are very good...... but it just puts me off when I see them!)

Do you think I am being sensible by not considering these instruments or am I missing out on some great purchases?

6. I remember the Embassy very well. I used to go there quite often to have a chat with Jon and Dave. The shop in Mansfield Woodhouse was a great place to chill out, play a few basses and sometimes even buy one or two - two Wals (one fretted and one fretless) and a StingRay are three that spring to mind. That wall of Wals was absolutely fantastic, there was always a dozen or so stunning examples! They introduced me to Shuker basses (they always kept a few hangin' about) and advised me that Mr Shuker was the man to see if a needed my basses serviced. I took their advise and would quite often go from the Embassy to see John Shuker at his workshop and get me planks sorted. I find it sad that places like the Embassy don't exist any longer (ebay..... guilty?), you could try and buy such wonderful instruments in a relaxed atmosphere, no pressure, lots of pleasure....... now that what I call shopping!

Doc.... I really miss those days too and yes, Dave Shields is too damn good - I can't stand talented people! - he also played (plays?) with Doctor and the Medics and was (is?) a Shuker endorsee...... sorry about the uncertainty but I haven't spoken to him for ages.

Guyl.... What happened? Well, when they moved to the old mill at Pleasley Vale they some how lost a lot of the feel/soul of the old place and although they tried they never seemed to recover from a flood that they had there shortly after moving in. A few months later they, as far as I know, packed it in and went on to other things.

Very sad...... :)

By the way nice collection of basses Doc..... 45 wasn't it!!

7. 99ster,

Where the hell did you find that Jazz..... what an amazin' condition it's in...... 100% original and bleedin' 'ell it's in better nick than my '63 refin!

You jammy..... erm.... bassist, and isn't your '66 Precision 100% orig. and in ex. cond. as well?

(Envious) Mart

8. Well done folks, talk about teamwork... that's what she looks like!

Cost?...... can't remember exactly but was less than £150 (poss. £130),

Tempting at that price, huh?

Thanks again,

Mart

9.
This is actually bugging me intensely - one of these (or at least, sounding like the description) appeared on Fleabay maybe about a month ago. I watched it until the price went over what I was prepared to pay & then I deleted it. The listing won't have expired yet, but I can't find it!

The bass itself was neck through, symmetrical body, single pup, not a copy of anything, but quite Alembic-ish, like many MIJ basses from the era. It was Japanese - had a black /gold MIJ sticker on the back of the head, & "Lincoln" on the front.

If I find the listing, I'll link it here.

Jon.
Spot on Jon...... it sounds just like the one I've seen (except no MIJ sticker).

You're right about the alembic look as well.... hope you can find a link..... it's starting to drive me bonkers as I can't find a thing on t'internet about these basses.

Thanks mate,

Mart

10. Looking in a local music shop the other day, I noticed a bass with the word 'Lincoln' on the head. I picked it up and found that it was very playable and not too expensive (I think?)

This particular model had a nice natural wood finish, single 'P Bass' pickup, single volume & single tone controls and a thru neck - If it helps it was described as '80's/Japanese'.

Can anyone out there in basschatland give me any info on 'Lincoln' and what kind of money do these normally go for?

Over to you folks,

Thanks,

Mart

11. Welcome Tyler,

Are the Laney combos really that bad?...... I've heard from others that they are good vfm,

Maybe you've got a bad 'un?

Anyway, nice to have you aboard,

Mart

12.
I havn't read the above posts cos i'm in a rush, so apologies if this has been said before.

Pick up a 2nd hand American Jazz bass with S1 switching, probly cost you about £500 - £600.
The S1 switch changes the neck pickup between series and parrallel, giving you Jazz tones when off and Precision tones when on!

Nice

Si
+1

I agree - get one for the best of both worlds.

By the way, don't go for the Precision with the S1 switching, Ive got one and I'm still trying to work out why it's there...... all it seems to do is give you a thin sound similar to a (very) cheap P Bass copy - or is it just me?

Cheers,

Mart.

13. I know I've got too many basses already...... but I'd love a black early 70's Precision with a maple neck.

I had a '74 years ago and sold it. With the money from the sale I got a brand new Peavey Dyna-Bass and what money
was left I used as beer money....... seemed like a good idea at the time. Looking back, it doesn't seem so good now.

Nevermind.......
