I own an Alembic Stanley Clarke Deluxe.  I had absolutely no concerns that my playing would start to emulate that of Stanley, and it genuinely hasn't.

Same here, though when i first got mine i did use his sound as reference material so i could explore the controls with a tonal aim in mind. The only time i try to emulate him is if i am covering one of his tracks on a gig. Superb bass though.

Did you not open a large ceremony last year with the band too. ?

The thing i remember most about it..........the colourful suit you were wearing. So cool.

    Dave

Yep we did the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony.. Sadly we could not keep the suits, they have apparently gone to a museum somewhere.

  3. Not a one hit wonder as such but i'm in a band who, decades before I joined, had one huge worldwide No:1 hit song back in 1982. There were a few more hit records for a few years till the band broke up. Some years later they reformed, and I was recruited as a session guitarist for a few years then got asked to join the band. A few years after that we parted company amicably, then in 2012 after depping on bass for them on a couple of gigs, i rejoined as their bass player and have been "Passing the Dutchie" with them ever since. We have not had any hits whilst i have been playing with them, though we have released an album which was started during my absence and when I returned I got to play bass on one of the tracks which was recorded at one of our gigs. In fact if memory serves me right it is the only non synth bass track on the album. The track is a cover of "I Shot the Sheriff" and the album is called When Reggae Was King.

  4. I cannot convince my ears that 1/4" strip of wood makes a significant difference to the overall sound of a fretted electric bass. A fretless maybe? All my electric basses are fretted and have ebony boards, not because i made that choice for to sonic reasons, it's an aesthetic preference. I like the look of maple fretboards too. Not seen any pau ferro fretboards.

  5. And I guess that I should cut it on the waste side of the bend.

If strings are likely to unwrap if cut wrongly, then the right method of cutting should be on the pack somewhere to let in experienced Dunlop string users like me know. I'm putting this down to experience now and thanks for the advice chums. 🙂

  6. I recently bought a couple of new sets of these  strings from the Dunlop stand at the guitar show in Solihull earlier this year.

Anyway i was replacing an older set. My normal procedure is to just lay the string so it is about an inch or so past the next tuner along then cut it. This is usually enough to get a tight wrap each tuning peg after poking the end down the tuner hole. However this time i cut the string and all was ok till the tension started to increase for tunning and the string started to unravel. so now i have a three string set. I contacted Dunlop but have not had a response back from them. Anyone else had this issue or can telll me what i am doing wrong. I have always used this method and my other basses that all have d'addario pro steels and never had this issue. This is the second time it's happened with dunlop strings.

This has probably been posted before (perhaps by me), but this is an absolute classic that can't be listened to too much:

This is indeed an incredible album. One of my favourites.

  8. Well let's start with anything played by the great famiily Barrett, he was my first bass hero.

Whilst I have played the odd Bob Marley & the Wailers song with various bands. In a few weeks time i'm about to do a dep gig with a Bob Marley Tribute band which will be my first gig where the whole set is covering his music.

I'm really gonna be happy at the end of that gig. 🙂😁

Other than that Stanley Clarke & Marcus Miller tracks that are within my dexterity. A couple of weeks ago i decided to learn Josie by Steely Dan that was great fun and once i'd got the hang of it I found a you tube no bass track of that song so I could play along. At some point I will try to download the track and record my bass over it to hear what it sounds like.

Actually most of the bass tracks I have learnt make me really happy playing, more so if in a gigging context.

I just spent the afternoon listening to SC - I enjoy some of the tones that he gets out of his Series I but others not so much.  I agree re: the low pass filters, they can produce some pretty mundane tones alongside the extraordinary.  I too have an SII but it's a four.  I was just thinking the other day, I'm not sure I've ever really spent much time with a Ric - I've certainly not owned one (or a Musicman).  I shall seek out a Ric this weekend - thanks for the thread - I'm inspired.

I Spent part of yesterday afternoom watching SC live in concert. Incredible gig.

  10. I went to see the concert last night. The band were so young and incredible musicians, and Stanley of course is a legend and performed superbly.

i was fortunate to meet them at their hotel after the gig. Mainly because Stanley's road manager had a couple of his own cd's for me to play on my radio programme. Anyway i got to have a chat with Stanley and he introduced me to his wife. I asked him if there was a reason he didn't play his alembics and he said it was because of the acoustics. It a depends on the venue since many of the theatre venues they play, an electric bass is too boomy in the room, so in those places he would use the acoustic for the gig.

To be honest i really love his db playing as much as his electric playing so it didn't affect my enjoyment.

To cheer up the last Friday in April and move into a long weekend, I was thinking about exactly which bass I would love to try. Not something I've tried before, owned before or such like. Something I might have only read about or seen on the Net. I have decided I'd love to try an Alembic Series II five stringer. What would your pick be?

The bass I dreamed about playing was also an alembic and now I consider myself extremely fortunate to own such a bass and, it surpassed everything i expected from it. I know they are not the sound that everyone likes but for me it's a dream bass fulfilled. I hope you get to try one out one day. I have to say getting your head round using low pass filters does take some getting used to. All the best.
