1. I'm new to valves, and this forum so forgive me for intruding. I must say though, playing through a valve amp for the first time was a semi spiritual experience :)

Hearing the tubes sing to me as I hit the overdrive, leaning the bass against the amp and just wallowing in a bed of feedback, driving it even further with compression and hearing that amazing warble effect as the tubes break up and die out.

That said, I can really appreciate a lovely hifi solid state sound.
I guess its a case of horses for courses. But I'm pretty sure my horse is hot and glowing and sings when you slap her

  2.
they coulda stuck an 82 in the wrong slot which would lower the gain a fair bit and having a 83 in the phase splitter wouldn't be very ideal drive wise either.
If that's the case, its gonna be pretty embarrassing for the guy who personally checked my amp and signed the manual :)

I'll check that video when I'm back home, its really surprising that ashdown don't have more YouTube videos of their own products....

  3.
only need to take the back off it and to have a look its nothing to serious, you could take some pictures while your in there though!
If the problem persists when I'm home at the weekend ill pull down its pants and take some pics.

@ tee really not sure what valves are in there, seems strange to me though that its responding differently to other peoples units.

  4.
That is the most exquisite looking MK1 I've ever seen, with all these layers of veneer, that beautiful top and rear wood and the centerline down the top! Wow. I have nothing to offer, unfortunately, but man, what a bass!
+1 I think that's the nicest bass I ever did saw....

  5. I recently bought my first tube amp, the ashdown little bastard. I was finally able to test it on Sunday, when I bought an abm 115 compact cab from the ads here (thanks tom!)

Initial impressions are mostly positive. It had a lovely warm clean tone, and the eq whilst not being very versatile fulfilled my expectations.

The problem was, I just wasn't getting the drive out of it I thought I would. I'v read on these very forums that other users are getting too much tube break up, weras mine produced a clean tone even with the volume on full!

I have already diagnosed a few things it may be. I wasn't using a dedicated speaker cable between the amp and the cab. Could this be it? I now have one on order from gak.

Could it be the cab? I know that the recommended 112 cab has lower wattage than the abm. I really don't know enough about that stuff though...

With my drive pedal engaged it was a different story, I could hear the tubes singing, the decay really blew me away... I was however hoping I could have some of that with the drive pedal off.

    Any suggestions?

  6. Generally practice in a chaotic rush the night before the gig. Pickled eggs are usually involved, they have been shown in clinical trials to improve concentration by filling the room with a pleasant scent.

I'd love a regular weekly rehearsal but its not possible

  7. Seeing nick oliveri with qotsa, Halloween in my home town. He was naked, painted as a skeleton standing atop the left speaker stack for most of the gig. Before then I was mostly into jazz and funk bass players, but all of a sudden I decided playing with a pick was not sacrilege but a necessary tool for certain scenarios.

  8. hiya

im the proud owner of a westone thunder 2 with an xlr out on it. im a little confused by the xlr though..... im guessing it has a balanced out, so im unsure what type of lead i should be using with it and i'v had varying responses from different sources.

everything was great until the first time i gigged it using an unbalanced lead. got a really nasty hum through the house bass amp. i borrowed the soundmans balanced xlr to jack lead and didnt get any sound at all so had to just soldier on and cut all the mids and highs from my tone to kill the hum.

any advice on the correct type of lead greatly appreciated, thanks for your time

  9. hi. so im wondering what advice the board could give regarding trading? if you are both sending something by courier for instance, theres gonna have to be a lot of trust involved? or is there a 3rd party through which you can carry out the transation? any thoughts on this greatly appreciated, as im thinking about doing a trade. cheers
