Choose a 5 string bass for £500 (ish)
SimonPLights replied to Cornwall Steve's topic in Bass Guitars
I have an M6 5 string sitting next to me waiting to be shipped back. I got a B stock model and appears the neck isn't in great shape. Sounds nice, loads of tones, but QC doesn't seem great. Replaced it with a Spector Icon that just feels so much higher quality and sounds huge. If you can find something Spector used for that price I'd do that. P.S. ignore me - string spacing would be too small for you. -
Bruno Mars - Treasure Stevie - Sir Duke (I've nailed the bass/brass break, but should probably learn the rest of the song...) Olivia Dean - So Easy To Fall In Love Stuff I'm enjoying playing that isn't for our set: Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso Lizzo - About Damn Time

Had this delivered from Bass Direct today. Very happy so far. It's the first Spector I've tried, but from listening online I thought I'd like it and it's exactly what I hoped it would be. To my ears, it sounds huge compared to my other two basses (Andertons Eastcoast PJ, which I actually really like, and a Sire M6 that is going back), the pickups seem to have loads of clarity. I'd like a little higher string tension but I'll likely put some flats or half rounds on it, no rush though. Maybe the IMA super polished. The black plastic knob caps look a bit cheap compared to the rest of it IMO, so going to add some gold ones It has a little bit of neck dive, not terrible but I might try weighting the bridge end of the strap Then I'm going to 3D print a finger ramp to go between the two pickups It doesn't have a passive mode and I didn't realise that it doesn't appear to have a battery access door...removing screws to get to the battery isn't my favourite. But for how it sounds and plays, whatever, it's not going back.

I've just ordered myself a new 5 string Spector and will need a gig bag for it. The Sire I'm returning has such a nice gig bag included that I'd keep if I could get away with it. The thing I like about it is that when there is no bass in it, it does just flop in to a pile on the floor - it's that semi-rigid EVA style material that retains its shape. Any suggestions for a good gig bag (ideally £60 or thereabouts) of that style? Would need a front pocket that could take a few cables and a mini pedalboard (HX stomp and 1 other small pedal) Looking at this https://thebassgallery.com/collections/gig-bags/products/tgi-extreme-bass-gigbag

Excellent. Out of interest, is it the NS Dimension 5 you have? If you ever fancied moving it on I'd be interested... -

Welcome. Nice Malawi tank, I think? That's a nice lineup. -
I bought one of these recently. Amazing little tool for the money, but the main use I had for it straight away was an octave effect, and despite all of the other effects and blocks being quite decent for bass, the 'Octa' effect's tracking was too scatty to be useable. I'll save up for a HX Stomp now I think, which would also do everything this does, other than the battery, so I returned it the next day. I particularly liked the Aguilar and SVT NAM captures, I thought they sounded excellent. Unless octave is important to you, these are a great little device if it fits your needs.

I had an M6 5 string delivered yesterday. I've never really been great with setups and would appreciate some advice from someone more competent. Initial sounds were nice, B was definitely useable but didn't blow me away with stability like I'm guessing a 37" would, but overall happy with that aspect. The action was quite nice, I didn't measure, but seemed reasonably low, but there was all sorts of clank and buzz on the lower strings in the first 5 frets. I sighted down the neck and it appeared to have a back bow, more so on the treble side. I checked the relief by fretting first and last and the strings were touching against every fret. I put the allen key in the truss rod and realised it's been tightened up loads. Doesn't appear there is enough adjustment left in the saddles to get it down to a reasonable action. To me, this suggests the neck angle is wrong? It was a B Stock model so I wondered if the initial owner wanted low action and had just cranked the truss rod, but then I saw a review for a different bass on Andertons (not the place I bought this one) - translated from French: Curious what other people would do. I really want to like this bass but low-ish action is quite important to me, and I don't want something that is potentially flawed. Thanks Simon

I posted here a small amount 15 years ago, and now I intend to rejoin properly. I used to play bass in an indie band and wanted to conquer the world. I then realised I enjoyed the technical side more than playing, and made my career touring doing all sorts of things - mostly as a lighting designer. Favourite client was lighting The Specials for a few tours. I now work off the road in R&D for the concert touring industry, developing and training the technical side of live events. I've started playing bass as a break from work, and joined a soul band. I picked up a cheap P and put flats on it, and I'm now picking up a second dual-humbucker bass for some of the more modern stuff.
The items, sorry wasnt clear.
Only the head really. I'll of course happily ship the cabs, I would just imagine it's a large amount of money. Depending on where you are I could also meet halfway. Edit: Just seen where you are, could meet western M25ish if that helps? -
Why didn't you offer it all here first? You may have got a sale and avoided all the fees!
I would have loved to have avoided said fees, however these items were actually first advertised on here in this same forum quite a while back, and nobody took them. -

Hi all, I read through the rules of posting stuff for sale on here, and it didn't mention anything about not linking to eBay listings, so here goes (sorry mods if it's written somewhere, couldnt find any mention though).
They're actually two very different instruments - The Marcus Miller Japanese signature model is usually made of just about the heaviest piece of ash you'll ever encounter. The gloss finishing, hardware & overall build quality is stunning on these, but they're let down by the absence of a passive tone control, noisy Japanese pickups & the fact that the Fender preamp is possibly the worst preamp out there. Harsh sounding nasty $2.50 thing! The new American Standard is a great bass - The necks are among the most stable Jazz necks around (with the posiflex graphite rods), the new thinner undercoat really does let more tone through the wood & the satin necks/gloss fingerboards (maple board versions only) are really nice, too. The new American pickups are shielded very well and the Am.Std is one of the few very quiet (buzz-wise) single coil Jazzes out there. So even though the MM is a lovely thing to hold and look at, I'd still go for the American Standard as the default player's choice.
Interesting, thanks. A white American Standard, fit a black guard and ashtrays then I guess!

Hi Guys, I'm after a white Jazz with a black guard and a maple board, of the best quality possible. Around 900 pounds as a budget. I'd like the neck pickup cover, which the MM obviously comes with but I could fit very easily to the Standard. Given they are built in different places, what does everyone think as to which one would be the better bass? Would likely run the MM passively, so electronics don't matter. I'm talking build quality, fretwork, all those things. What would everyone take out of the two? Cheers, Simon
