  1. Not a bad night. Last gig at the pub for the landlord & landlady (though we’ve since heard that the new licensees intend to carry on having bands so we’ll see.

TV on for the rugby and prior to that p155ed punters doing karaoke while we set up (oh joy). Then one of said punters decided they could play ‘guitar’ (I think you mean bass dear but let’s let that pass) so could they have a go to show their prowess? Not on that bass you can’t (Status S1) but knock yourself out with this one (beaten up FPPR S1 that SEBB attendees from years ago will remember Barney had for sale for years, plays and sounds great but looks in a state and one for the tightest of gigs where I don’t want to worry about knocks). So she strummed aimlessly for a while til I got bored and stood on the Microtubes mute footswitch and said “Oh no! You’ve broken it”.

Otherwise the gig went well despite mullered punters spilling drinks everywhere, but all singing along and no major foul ups by the band so not so bad. Slightly marred by landlord getting into a domestic over how he’d dealt with a punter that rumbled on while we packed up and tried not to get drawn in. 🫣

I am suddenly interested in fretless basses, and how easy they are to play.

    I want to:

Experience lined v unlined; understand the difference in fretboard materials; contemplate mwah v no mwah.

Is anyone bringing a fretless bass to the Bass Bash, that they can demonstrate to me?

    Thanks in advance.

    I can bring my lined G&L L2500

  3. It's always thundered on, though there was one night when it blew a fuse that got replaced temporarily with one from a mates Moggie Minor to finish the night 😳 We were young and lived through it, thought as he is/was an electrician & now teaches young sparks he should probably have known better!!

  4. Good fun last minute dep with Imposter Syndrome last night.

Booked for it Wednesday evening. Worked through the proposed set Thursday evening. Flew by the seat of my pants Friday. Got through relatively unscathed with plenty of eye contact and knowing nods. Crowd were happy so any fluffs passed them by😁

A load of songs that’ll be standards for others, but I don’t listen to as a matter of course or have ever really played (Ruby, Dakota, I Predict a Riot, etc.,) but survived.

First gig with the new car and its voluminous boot which was nice. Took the small rig (two BF One10’s and Tonehammer 350 with a couple of spare amps) and they disappeared into the recesses with room to spare.

The band all use IEM’s so ran a line to mine through the Behringer PM1 and mixed with Mixing Station on my iPad

Boy I work with is furious, hoped for mass forced deportation of everyone with African or Indian ancestry who've been here less than 4 decades.

Swears he's not racist but I have my doubts 😄

Talking to someone recently who is/was all for the B-word but, isn’t that lucky, qualifies for an Irish passport through his mother 🤬

  6. Had a through the for a Heath Robinson method for cheaper stereo IEM using the Aviom kit I think our sound guy still has, but would it work / be worth the effort.

     - Aviom submixer stereo out into a splitter

     - two Xvive U4 transmitters running different channels

     - two Xvive U4 receivers into a stereo y cable

     - y cable into Behringer P2

I suppose it should work but there’s a lot of potential breaks in the chain

Edit: probably easier and cheaper to use a Sennheiser XSW 🤦‍♂️

  7. I’ve done a few deps in recent months so have been learning quite a few bits and bobs. So many are 4 chord wonders I keep finding myself thinking I need to sit down and learn these songs, sit down with a Spotify playlist, and get bored after the first verse.

Years ago an earlier band, who I’m still working with on various recording projects and the occasional gig, used to spice things up at gigs where we were playing originals on occasion by having a quick run through of a new cover in the break and playing it in the encore. Can’t say we actually learnt then it was just our memory of the song and busk it 🤣

A load of bass players bring a selection of kit, set up in a couple of rooms, chat and discuss, try out other folk's kit, sit down for a presentation or two from a pro, eat cake, drink tea, maybe buy something from the table-top sale, make friends.

    …and there’s a raffle

but mostly it’s a lot of fun chatting about basses, gigging, gear, and trying stuff you might not otherwise get a chance to try.

The only downside to a bass bash (or being a member on BC) is the inherent risk of serious GAS 🤣 I went years happy with one bass and one amp…now don’t ask 🤪😳🫣🤣

  10. A couple of gigs this weekend.

Sound was good and we were tight both nights but had router problems with the desk. First night started with the wrong one plugged in, second night it didn’t work so had to be swapped so both setups had their stresses.

Second night there’s been something going on with management changes and we are told that the regulars are siding with the old manager and boycotting the pub at the moment, we’ll that’s what we’ll  console ourselves with anyway 🤷‍♂️

I’ve had lots of plexi Marshalls over the years. Based on features - the type of output selector, the position of the filter caps (none on top of the chassis) and what looks like a narrow vent in the cabinet, I would date this to 1967. The transformers look original. The mains transformer is the taller earlier type. If it hasn’t been messed with inside too much I would say you are in possession of what is a quite a valuable amp these days. It’s been some time since I followed values closely, but if it were mine and I was selling, I’d be pitching it around £3k. It could be worth more than that, I would take advice. I do know the right people to ask if needed.

    Rob

It’s had the recent re-valve and before that I think some capacitors when we got it working again 20+ years ago. Otherwise it should be pretty much original.

still an awesome roar, but one restricted to home and recording nowadays 🙂

  12. No feet now and if there were any I think they’d have been small.

I have a power brake and may try it with that.

Somewhere mid-late 60’s is what I’ve always understood it to be.

Where are Joan, Win and Mary now I wonder (though I suspect I can make a fair guess 👻)

Very Nice, but Berlimy if those were the settings used!..

🤣 My youngest is a guitarist and used it for a while with the inputs linked. He was the one that marked settings not knowing the potential value. I need to work out how to remove them someday

  14. Just got my Superbass back from revalve and bias, but have not had a chance to fire it up. Might have to give it a blast through on of my BF BigBaby’s

It’s had a hard life and weighs a 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 ton.

I got it secondhand in the mid/late 70’s when it still had most of the Marshall logo but that eventually went with being slung in and out the band van.

It did have work to get it running again after sitting unused for a while and had the Bulgin replaced with an IEC but otherwise is largely original.

Age wise I’m told by those that have worked on it and know Marshall’s that it’s early, probably mid 60’s, so potentially valuable even in the state it’s now. When I sent some details to Marshall years back they didn’t recognise the serial number but it looks to be the same as on the faded bit of paper inside the case.

No idea who Frank was, but the stencil on the front is an iteration of my first band.

  15. Dep with no rehearsal, just a setlist to learn. Had played about a third and knew the rest from the radio.

Picked up a few more transcriptions from @tomread (I owe you another pint), but though I’ve never played Chelsea Dagger or I Predict A Riot and others of that ilk they’re pretty straightforward so with a couple of first chord hints / kick starts to remind me I got through pretty much unscathed and all seemed ok.

I did manage to totally screw the start to Sweet Child ‘o Mine, but in my defence it was the end of the night on a dark stage and I could barely see the fretboard or where I was on it 🤦‍♂️

Band all use IEM’s so I took an aux feed on an XLR into the P2 and on to my new Mercury Custom plugs and did my monitor mix which went ok. I’m getting used to the IEM process and liking it 🙂

  16. Another good evening with the MercuryIEM’s and getting closer to a mix I’m happy with. Rolled the H6 ambient feed back and it helped a lot as that was getting ox & guitar bleed from the drummer’s monitor even if put behind the speaker.

Got hold of XAirMonitorMix from App Store which means I can’t accidentally select FOH and mess anything up. Seemed a no-brainier for £3.99

Still only used the P2 as everywhere has been tight on space, but that all seems fine running a 10M XLR from the stage box.

re the mono/stereo switch in the P2 I keep meaning to check but as I’m getting something in both plugs I’m presuming it must be set right, or just runs dual mono from the XLR in 🤷‍♂️
