1. So i was looking to buy some new saddles for a really old bass since the little height adjustment screws are old, rusty and stripped, And i came across a bridge with these "knurled saddles" and i have them on my mexican 50's precision, fender claims that they improve the tone in some way, Is this the possible mysterious reason why i think the 50's p basses sounds so much better than a standard mexican ones? For anyone who has no clue what i'm on about, heres a pic. And does anyone know where i can get a set of four bridge saddles on their own without the baseplate? (Knurled or Not, im not bothered) haha because the bass i'm changing the saddles on is a Japanese Jazz copy made by a company called Morris, and the baseplate isn't fender standard size, The saddles however are. I shall enclose a picture below, Thanks, Frog.
2.
If I'm right in thinking this is from a Mexican Precison, I've got some spare saddles. PM me your address and I'll sort it.
Thats right Thanks alot, I'll PM you straight away. -Tom
3. Hi there, I have a fender precision for which i need a single Saddle piece, Im not bothered if its real fender or copy, but ive searched everywhere on the internet for bridge saddles alone, and i don't fancy replacing the whole bridge, Anyone know of a source for one? I'll post a picture of the problem, i need one preferably cheap and fast. Thanks.
4. I've sort of answered my own question but really appreciate someone setting me straight on the whole Ohms rating system... haha Just want to make sure i make the right decision... its a lot of cash... especially for a student like me... Of course i have tried out the terror and it was ace, just cant test volume in the shop. haha Probably end up with the 500watt head and the 610, If i ever needed more i could always upgrade to the 1000watt, and then a compact 115 underneath the 610. And @ icastle... your rig can NEVER be big enough! hahaha although the 610 isn't the most practical cab for small gigs, i'm guessing it will hold up well in the larger ones, Someone with some experience of using this cab.... or another like it can enlighten me, I believe Ampeg do something similar? Frog
5. thanks for the replies so far. Im not sure i'll really need the extra 500watt, although it does seem to vary by brand and model... From what i've heard the 500watt Terror is really loud, And yeah, the 8 x 10 would probably be a bit much effort, But similarly the 410 + 115 combination probably would too, I wouldn't really like buying both, and just leaving one sitting lonely in my house... lol So i know id end up using it... perhaps the 610 would be more practical, something of a compromise between the other options...
6.
Erm - do you not think using 8x10 or 6x10 + 1x15 cabs might be just a bit excessive for pub gigs?
thats so true, But the thing is, i should have mentioned, I also play in a Pop rock kind of Original band, And have plans for a Modern / Hard Rock band, Influences from Nickelback (Old Stuff) theory of a deadman and King's X. haha So Power and sound quality are quite important.
7. First Bass Owned: AXL Player Deluxe (P Bass) 'Go To' Bass: Fender 1957 Precision Bass 'Your' Bass: 1970 Morris Hurricane (Jazz Bass)
8. Hiya Im in a function / pub band playing anything from reggae to hard rock, And i've decided the brand names in which i want to upgrade from my 1980's trace elliot combo, as its seen better days and i really need the extra power, The products i'm looking at are The Orange Terror Bass 500 / 1000 watt head, can you advise me which would be better 500 watts i would have thought is enough and i'd rather not spend the extra £100. - My first question is Regarding this, With the cabinets, when you connect them does the RMS power rating of the two cabs have to add up to more than say 1000watt or does each cabinet have to be over 1000watt if i was using a 1000watt head with them, this has always confused me and no-one has ever put me straight. And as for Cabs, All of the ABM range by Ashdown are what i was looking at getting, I have 3 options and questions about Ohm-age. - The ABM 115 + ABM 410 (Both rated @ 8 Ohms) - The ABM 610 (Rated @ 4 Ohms) - The ABM 810 (Rated @ 4 Ohms) Which of these combinations would work best with either of the two suggested amp heads? Does 4 / 8 Ohms make a difference? Better sound etc? Also i just wondered Practically, the 610 cab seems better, because it has a set of wheels on the back etc. but could i also combine this with say, a compact ABM 115 cab. Thanks in advance and even though i'm usually really good with tech sound and ohms etc aren't my strong point, so i apologize for being a n00b haha.
9. Picture dosent really do the Black hardware justice...
10. Another one to consider is the Electro Harmonix Nano Clone, Its not a true Bass Chorus, but is designed to be used on both, I know you've already ordered it now, But just in the future if you decide to upgrade, It is slightly limited being that it only has a rate knob, but i've found the depth to be about perfect for most bass applications, For about £30 its not bad, and is solid die-cast aluminium -Tom
11.
The termination of the conductors will need soldering, if you mean the 2 screws that hold the top on the casing, that's all they do. Cheerz, John
okay thanks, I have a soldering iron so not a problem. Would i be right in assuming this is the right kind of cable for a mono jack - jack? http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=123
12. Hi there, I have a couple of queries as to how to do this, My pedalboard is looking scruffy and mismatched and i've been looking into making my own length jack cables, Here are the ends i will be purchasing... http://www.gapco.co.uk/1-4-inch-90-Mono-Ja...g-type-349.html I want to know where i can buy the 1/4 inch cable to use, and with this type of jack plug, will i have to solder it or will the two screws hold it firmly enough in place? Hope i've worded this in a way thats not too difficult to understand. Links to website where i can buy the raw cable would be useful too as every time i've searched all i get is pre-built cables. -Tom
13.
a volume/ mute pedal is very easy, just a switch open or shut for mute or going into a variable resistor for volume look at freestompboxes for a tremelo, which will be just a bit harder!
Cheers for the help, i've found a website (general guitar gadgets) which sells kits, Does anyone know where i can get my Photoshop sticker creations printed with a glossy surface like on real effects pedals? Or if possible printing paper that is glossy, but with the self adhesive removable back?
14. Does anyone know where i can find the parts and Circuit diagrams to build These pedals? - Volume / Mute Pedal - Tremelo Pedal, with adjustable rate & depth PM me if possible but you can also post it on here, since it would be useful for others. This would be really helpful, cheers
15.
I dont think a synth is needed really. If the guitar is fuzzed enough a shallow chorus+distortion on the bass will do the job. Synths are too pricey to buy for just occasional use. And 99% of your average pub audience wouldnt realise if there was a synth there or not.
Yeah thats a valid point but i've been considering getting a bass synth pedal for a while now, for my own personal use, Using it to better my tone at a gig is just a bonus, i want to know what the best one is to go for
16. At the moment i'm using an old Trace Elliot combo, which does have a 7 band EQ, But i just don't seem to get a great sound with it on and generally the amp sounds better without it, But then again, i like the idea of being able to swap out the high ends and low ends at a click of a button, If any of you have ever seen the bassist from King's X's set up you'll notice he has two yamaha EQ's with one that is switching all the high end off and low on, and another with all the high end on and all low end off, Although he uses this very uniquely to better his sound it would be useful having different EQ settings quickly which is why i was thinking about buying two of the smaller MXR 6 band EQ pedals, can anyone advise me on this? Basically i want to know what the best small EQ stomp boxes are best for this purpose. cheers
17.
Function band . . . . plug in baby . . . . . . does not compute. Wish i had some of your functions mate LOL!
Haha, Well we also play Pubs and we need plenty of crowd pleasers...
18. Hi there, I know there are already a few topics already about synth pedals I've recently joined a Function band, and i've been asked to play Plug In Baby, so of course i need a synth pedal quick, id already given some thought before and explored the web to see whats out there, and obviously narrowed the search down to two candidates... i want to know peoples opinions on which is the best one? Boss Synth / EHX Micro-synth? i know they have many similarities in terms of tone and function and are both reliable, but which gives me more control and overall power over a sexy sweet synth bass sound, especially as it needs to sound right for this. Thanks -Tom
19. Searched the forum no-one seems to have asked this Now i know equalization is an important part of getting a good tone and balance of Highs and Lows, and the setup i'm using at the moment doesn't have a lot of EQ settings, i want something compact and relatively cheap I basically want to know what EQ stomp boxes are best used with bass, I have talked to a few players who use standard Guitar EQ stomp boxes, but is this getting the best out of my tone? A couple of Stomp boxes i've short listed are either, -The Boss Bass EQ Pedal, which is a more expensive option... or -The MXR M109 6 Band EQ pedal, I've heard good stuff about, But any good for bass? They're both pretty compact, I also would think about investing the MXR 10 Band EQ if it would give me significantly more options... Someone help me out, :|
20.
Hi Tom, Off the wall idea, but how about cutting an inch of pencil, splitting it down the middle to make a D shaped piece of wood. Hold it against the remaining piece of shaft and push the button back on. Ian
Good idea, i shall give that a try, and if it holds tight i shall superglue it.
21.
But... you're just talking about the set-up of the bass Good that you found one that straight away was set up how *you* like it, but you could get another one set up similarly... could you not?
Well... I believe i also mentioned that the neck was a completely different thickness... ...which really puts Fender in the frame, seems they cant make the same bass twice perfect, They were both nice to play, but despite this everything about my own was better... haha
22. This may be cosmetic damage, and as much as this faithful combo has been through the wars, this issue is rather irritating, The GAIN knob has come off and i need an ingenious way to re fit it, One of the sides of the two pronged slot for the knob has broken off, this is not just about the cosmetics of the amp, but is slightly annoying when you don't know what level of gain you're on, I don't really have to technical know how to take the head out and put a new one in, But if anyone knows a good guitar tech around Guildford / Godalming or one willing to travel that would also be appreciated... Any help welcome... Thanks Tom
23. Yeah i've looked into a few, I wish fender would just ReIssue the VI again, But i really like the look of the Dead on 67's by Dano, And i may or may not try this, If i do go ahead with it i'll be sure to post it on here as to my success or failure... And thanks for all the helpful replies
24. I have big lumberjack hands, but despite this i've always played Jazz, the thin fast neck is great... BUT! This last summer i played what was for me the best bass i've ever played, and i have no idea why, It is a Mexican 50's Style Precision and i just had to buy it, something about it, the neck was set unusually low for a precision, and the action is perfect, and the tone just blows your balls off, i really didn't expect this, It for me is perfect, and i was originally just testing it out as a comparison against a Jazz i was going to buy, Fender were obviously having a good day when they made this one, better than any USA standard i've played and better than any Vintage P Basses i've played, But since i have tried out another of the exact same make and model and colour, lol, and it was totally different... different action and neck was set in much higher... Its probably just Perfect for me, so this is sort of irrelevant... just putting in my two pennies... -Tom
