1. Hi bremen I just quickly measured the plate - the holes themselves are about 6.5mm (6.35mm perhaps?) and the edges of the actual countersink measure about 10.5mm. The screwheads look to be a tiny bit short of 8mm. If you have something bigger that'd be great, drop me a PM with details if you want Cheers
2. Hi all All the parts have arrrived (aside from a few) for my project and I want to put it together desperately - the body/neck have been sat here since Wednesday and I was still waiting on a few fixings. I already had a neckplate but no screws, so I grabbed a set of 42mm from axesrus. The heads seem a bit too small to me, they don't seem sit in the countersink of the plate correctly and since i've never fitted any before I don't want to balls it up on the first attempt. Will I be ok using these or should I get different ones? I thought these may be for guitars but then I thought it was all standard? Pics attached (sorry if they're a bit big)
3. I posted about these a while ago, you can get a set on ebay for about a tenner - seems that loads of Hong Kong based ones have cropped up lately too!
4. I read the first post a bit too quickly and missed the word 'beef' - it basically looked as if you'd butchered your friend's dog for the sake of a new nut for your bass. This whole thread was quite horrifying until I went back and read it again
5. Gone for a typical black soapbar henry! That said, there is a way to fake it - a guy in the states I found via the last bass outpost makes 'toppers' - which is a basically a thin polished aluminium plate the same size/shape as the top of the soapbar. You just screw through it and voila - fake chrome pickup haha. You do get a thin bit of black plastic visible at the sides but I'm not bothered about that - could always spray it chrome. I spoke to the guy but he never got back to me on the cost (importing etc) so I imagine it'd be a bit steep for what it is, unless we can get somebody here to make them?
6. I was at the 2001 Manchester gig, but had to leave early cos my ex had to catch a bus I also managed to see God is an Astronaut last year at Islington Mill in Salford, think it was February. I managed to haggle a tshirt off the merch guy, then for the first time ever had the balls to go upto the band and have a chat and asked for a photo, which they were all too happy to oblige for. When we'd left the gig and were going for the bus my mate chose THAT moment to share the fact that the photo didn't actually take properly.....
7.
sounds like a plan - sure it'll sound great. btw - the logo on the bartolinis isn't actually as obvious as you'd think.
It's probably just been over-emphasised by illustrations and that's why it's stuck in my head like that But either way, I just tried to avoid 'branding' on anything when I can, there'll be nothing on the headstock either, just think it looks nicer and then it's more about how it sounds and less about what's written on it
8. I think I've looked at every possible soapbar out there I think, haha, I'm sure barts sound great but I don't like that huge embossed logo on them, think it looks a bit tacky Either way I've sorted a custom one out, turns out that it'd cost roughly the same as a Seymour Duncan etc but I get it made to my spec, so I thought why not
9. Thanks for the comments! @ahpook, routed for a 3.5" x 1.5" soapbar, actual route is 91.5mm x 39.5mm according to the luthier EDIT: I believe it's 1" deep too, it was a while ago the route was done so I've forgotten the exact details of the depth
10. Hi all, Couple more pics here, if anyone is interested.... I should have it before next week
11. I'm having a custom humbucker made by Allan at Catswhisker for my build. Can't comment on the tone etc yet because it's not been made, but I can say he's a lovely bloke, incredibly helpful and knows what he's doing. If you've not spoken to him it might be worth sending him an email to see what he can tell you?
12. My Ibanez is agathis... Always sounded fine to me, plus it's a light wood so easier on your back I suppose. Aren't some of the Vintage Modifieds made of agathis?
13. Update, couple of new pictures today from the finishing process. Not long left now! Just needs to wait before flatting and buffing. First one is primer, second is with all the topcoats
14. Hi everyone, my mate is selling his Ashdown Fallen Angel guitar amp and is trying to raise money for an Orange that he's after, since he's downsizing his rig after moving into a flat: Ashdown FA60 head - £180 Ashdown FA60 head + Crate 4x12 celestion cab - £350 60 watt, 2 channel all valve head. Includes foot switch. Clean channel, Overdrive channel with foot switchable gain boost, 2 independent master volumes as well as a volume on each channel. 16 built in foot switchable DSP effects, with a stand alone reverb. As the name suggests this head is geared towards hard rock/ metal players. The over drive is really crunchy and raw sounding and with the gain boost can get really thick and dirty. The clean channel is really nice for a rock amp, and when you add some of the built in chorus, it sounds really thick and rich. The head is a very good all rounder, but ideally suited to a rock player. I am happy to sell the head on its own, or pair it with a celestion loaded crate 4x12 cab. The cab is in full working order, but shows some cosmetic signs of being a gigging amp. Although Crate isn't exactly a marshall, you cant fault the sound of this cab. Its solid build and casters make it ideal for gigging. The celestion speakers really scream but keep a nice punchy bottom end which sounds nice and heavy, but without sounding muddy. To hear the head and cab paired up, listen to this recording of my band (All guitars where recorded using the head and cab, with no additional effects other than wah on the lead : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwL3xHHUO70 ) Finally, my reason for selling is simply that I have moved into a flat and need to down size my rig, im selling my stack and getting smaller combo. Anyone considering buying is more than welcome to come and view/try it out before making a decision. PIC (Not the actual one, just a typical press shot): Ashdown Fallen Angel He's in Salford/Manchester. If anybody wants more info PM me and I'll pass on contact details Cheers
15. I got my first guitar is 2006 I think, and never really got anywhere with it. I still have a couple now, but they rarely get touched unless I hear something I want to try to play - I'd say I'm pretty poor on guitar all round. Got my first bass in the middle of 2009, got into it later that year and since then I'd say I play it practically every day if I can. I don't know what it is, I just find it infinitely more enjoyable and rewarding, and took to it much more easily. It works out because my mates play guitar so I fit in there too
16. Bought a set of Hipshot tuners off Tom, comms were great and he's a nice chap to deal with - even saved me a job and replaced some duff screws for me. What's better is that they arrived quickly, securely packaged and wrapped like a lovely little bass-related birthday gift. Cheers!
17. PM me some info, I have a Grundig reel to reel that I have no mic for!
18.
Hi all I'm selling some Filtertons after changing to Thundertrons. I've had the bass for nearly two weeks, four days with a Luthier and only used it on a couple of songs at practice. Therefore these things are virtually brand new. I'll box them in the Thundertron boxes. If anyone is interested make me an offer before I chance my arm on Ebay!! They're go for 95.00 british pounds new. I obviously won't expect that, i'd be looking for about 70.00 pounds each plus postage and packaging. One recently went for close to that on Ebay. I'll consider all offers but would like to make some of the outlay on the Thundertrons! Cheers
What are the dimensions?
19. Ahh I'd forgotten about Jack... he went to the same uni I'm at so he's not far away, might give him a call. Cheers for the info
20.
Good timing my friend. Had my shipping notification email from Warmoth this morning, so the neck should be with me tomorrow, all being well. Of course, pics when she arrives! After that I'm looking to get it sent to a luthier in Manchester to bolt her together and set her up just right.
Who might that be if you don't mind me asking? I'm thinking of finding someone in Manc for a setup when mine arrives but not sure where to go yet, apart from one in Stockport a mate uses
21. Many thanks for that info guys, thank link is very useful too. I'll weigh it up and see what options I have, cheers
22. Hi all Just a quickie, as I've never bought anything bigger than a CD from the States. If I was to purchase a pickup (soapbar) along with a couple of other bits (pickup ring etc) for a certain sum inclusive of delivery etc, would I incur any additional charges (tax/duty) when it gets here? Cheers
23. Don't quote me on it, but I remember when I was researching my neck (I eventually got a MM aswell) I read on a forum that one guy had never had a perfect fit on any MM or Allparts (might of even been Warmoth) neck as they're always err on the slightly wider side to they can be sanded for a tight fit into the neck pocket. IE better to have a wider neck than one that will be loose in the pocket from the off. It seems logical but like I said, don't quote me on it, I may be wrong. That said mine went straight to the luthier to have a body made to go with it. The pocket was done to Fender spec according to him and he said it's a good fit, although MMs are slighly more rounded at the heel I believe. Maybe there's variation from neck to neck, no way of knowing really
24. I always fancied one of these but the pole piece spread is only 48mm isn't it?
