instruments of a professional or posh standard

No such thing. If you're happy with your kit and it does the job, then it's as professional and posh as it needs to be. Amp and speakers must obviously be able to do whats needed. My main, in fact only, bass is a parts bass. Best I've ever used, bar one, which was another parts bass I stupidly sold...

  2. My current, and only, bass, started out like this:

A brand-new 2003/4 MIM (both dates on it in various places, 2003 serial). I'd already replaced the guard.

    Now, it looks like this:

Only original bits left are the body, bridge, and knobs! Pickup is an American Standard from 1994, wiring by KiOgon. Neck is a 2014 American Special Jazz. Hipshot lollipops. The tuners were my only error, I wasn't aware when talking to Hipshot that I could have asked for longer shafts at no extra cost.

Then ther was this one, now sold:

This is made up of a Squier fretless P body, guard, and wiring, powered by a Seymour Duncan SPB-3 pickup. Bolted to it is a Squier VM77 Jazz Bsss neck, with Wilkinson tuners. I really wish I still had this one...

Not least because it weighed less than 7 pounds...

Apologies for the weird bass face!

    Hi Folks,

it pays not to be hasty: I ordered a set of the Wilkinson tuners only to see I had been messaged with an offer of some unused, surplus ones! Rats!

Then I discovered this: https://www.wdmusic.co.uk/hardware-parts-c1/tuning-machines-c28/bass-tuners-c33/wd-music-enclosed-4-in-line-bass-tuners-chrome-p4987 at WD, which look pretty much the same as the stock tuners but with proper metal buttons. Anyway now you know folks. They look as though they will drop in without any need to ream out the holes but might be a little more robust.

They are the same as the Bronco's original tuners, but with a better shaft and button. Certainly look better, but I'd still do the mod, personally.

Am I the only person who plays bass and generally hates slap?

I think it can sound good when used sparingly (like Billy Gould or Tim Commerford) but I hate songs which are just slaps and pops all the way through. I really dislike songs which weren't slapped covered by a bassist who plays slap all the way through. I don't even like Primus.

Am I on my own with this?

    No.

We spent the last year in limbo waiting to sell and move.  Since we got here we've got planning permission for an extension and internal changes so we're back in limbo again waiting for a builder to become available. Due to lockdown we've not been able to get out and about and the weather has been dreadful but hey ho lockdown is ending and the summer is coming and hopefully the temperature will rise so things are looking up. Absolutely no regrets at all. 😁

    Excellent!

  6. Holy thread ressurection, Batman!

Had an idle read through this, and saw some of Dave @obbm 's handiwork. He also made my lead for this application, except I was too dumb to remember to ask for a right-angled Speakon. D'oh...

What I did ask for, regardless, was the lowest loss cable he could fit between a Speakon and a 1/4" jack plug.

The result is this: the plug is only a little thinner than the Elf it plugs into!

Quality kit, as always from Dave.
