Hello!
A question on neck pocket marks and wood type...
This is from my 1997 CIJ precision bass. Anybody familiar with these marks PB-620 ? I haven't found anything on these... any idea of the type of wood by the look of the grain? the picture is not super quality but it's fairly neutral in color/saturation. The marks on the all maple neck fitted on this bass are also May 1997 stamped on the heel, and PB-57DEX2 stamped on the fitting side.
Body is Seafoam/Sea Foam green on top of what possibly is Sunburst.
I got this second hand and no idea of what the wood/bass model can be. Any hints appreciated, thank you!!

 • 1 month later...

I just got a 1996 Fender catalogue and there is no mention of this bass/colour, if anybody happens to have the 1997 catalogue please check the japanese production and let me know if this bass/colour appears. Again, all def Fender factory original Crafted in Japan.
Thank you!
Could it be a refinished 62 RI Precision bass? That'd be my first thought. Got any more pics?
Hello, thank you for your comments.

Definitely a custom colour done by Fender, not a refin. And quite possibly done over a sunburst body.

Here are two more pics, one of the neck stamp/codes (the heel of the neck is also stamped -May 97- like the pocket, same stamp) and another of the bass as it is now. Originally It had the nasty cheap japan pickups and mini-pots, with a single ply 8 hole white pickguard . I put good pots/pickups and the anodized pickguard, but left the tuners, also small plate Japan tuners.

Regarding the missmatch between neck/body stamps, in this case 57 vs 62... seems that there was something going on at some point... please see somebody else commented the same on a Stratocaster guitar made pretty much at the same time:

http://forum.fendertalk.com/showthread.php...er&p=144728

And the DEX2 code on the neck too... that nobody seems to know about, and appears in both Made In Japan and Crafted in Japan instruments... Some people points this can mean -Export- but some other people mentions the code DEX was originated at Fender Japan custom shop???!! The EXTRAD necks also have this code.

I also do know that Fender has put many many times the custom colours over other solid colours or sunburst, as they used to do back in the days where anything other than sunburst was a custom colour... I do know also that in 1996, after many many years, Fender started again offering Foam Green:

http://home.provide.net/~cfh/fenderc.html

"....there were five Fender custom colors (not including Candy Apple Red) that were no longer available from any paint manufacturer. These colors included Sonic Blue, Sherwood Green, Foam Green, Surf Green and Shell Pink. These colors were originally Duco (nitrocellulose) paint formulas that were never translated to acyrlic versions.... But during the summer of 1996, something happened. All of a sudden, those five famous Fender colors became available from DuPont in both lacquer and ChromaBase versions!... "

Looking at it (stamps over colours, etc) Again, I say definitely a custom colour done by Fender, not a refin. And quite possibly done over a sunburst body.

So far my best guess is that this was sold as a -cheap- custom colour bass offered for a short time? perhaps put together from left over parts? custom colours over bad sunburst jobs?. Fender put cheap hardware... but the neck is great! 1997 could have been quite a mess at the time in Japan, with Fujigen stopping making guitars for Fender, with Tokai and Dyna taking over Japan production... maybe mixing parts left over from Fujigen? And well, nobody seems really to know a lot of what's in Fender codes. Any info will be really welcome.

Also please if anybody comes accross a 1997 catalogue... have a look and see if you see this bass/colour offered and what was the denomination and specs.

thank you for any info,
David
